Not Too Sweet

- DOMINIK -

I am in the middle of calling Luka to ask him what story he gave Angelique and why when Vanessa takes the phone from my hand. She disconnects the call, cheeks still flushed from what she saw in Angelique's shadow.

"Please don't be mad," she says, voice quiet—eyelashes fluttering against her cheeks. "It must have been for a good reason. It is really our fault, if you think about it. We were probably pretty obvious out in the parking lot earlier, and Luka must have just been doing damage control. What did Angelique say to you about it?"

"She told me that she respects all lifestyles."

Vanessa giggles and then catches herself. "Sorry."

"Why are you sorry?" I ask with a crooked smile, still wishing to tease her about this. My reaction to this new story about us is balancing on the edge between amusement and irritation, but I love watching her reactions. They are not what I would expect.
