Miserable Beings

"How about we help you become a cop?"

Elara's question confused him even until they walked out of the hospital. After she asked that, he stared at her and said, 'Nah.' in a moment of bewilderment. But he couldn't let it out of his mind.

"What do you mean help me become a cop?" Sorin finally asked.

Elara turned to him as they walked down the hospital's pavement. She answered. "Whether you choose to be a sovereign or not, we can help you have any job you want. We have lots of connections, and we can set it up quite smoothly."

"Even when you become a sovereign, you can have normal jobs?" Sorin asked.

"Well, just so you know, Brother is a painter. Uncle is a sailor, and Aunt is a doctor."

"You can have normal jobs as long as you don't use your reign for something other than your duties and personal gain. And even if you can, the heavenly restriction will stop you from going too far," Elara explained.

"Huh," Sorin remembered how Elara told him she was a Supernatural Consultant.

"You wanna try?" she asked.

"I told you I don't want to be a cop anymore," Sorin said. "And being a sovereign and a cop simultaneously, isn't it too risky?"

Elara smiled at him. "I guess you're right."

"Anyways, before you come back to your life, you can ask us anything," she said. And then, Sorin heard her inner thought, [We'll also protect you from all supernatural things...]

Sorin felt a little bit conflicted. So they truly were being sincere... to give him the choices and everything else. Well, this life... it wasn't so bad.

"If I leave, would you guys be okay? I mean, you said you need new talent," Sorin asked.

"It'll be fine. Didn't you see Brother's reign? He's so strong, but my Papa is even stronger. There's no need to worry," Elara said. [And now I know you've been through so much already. It's fair to let you live in peace.]

Elara smiled. [I shouldn't have asked you to be a cop. You wouldn't be able to live normally. I'm such an idiot.]

But could Sorin blame her when he knew deep inside he wanted to have the power to change something? Whether it to be a cop... or a sovereign.

After everything that had happened, was he truly certain that he wanted to return to his former life?

"Oh! That's Brother," Elara looked far ahead, and Sorin turned in the same direction.

Brother stood beside the red Alfa Romeo they borrowed yesterday at the edge of a park, and a blonde-haired woman was standing in front of him. It seemed that they were talking.

But before Sorin and Elara could call Brother, suddenly...

SLAP!

The woman slapped Brother hard on his left cheek.

"You don't have to explain anything. You can also have the car, I don't care. Just... get out of my life," the woman said, her face full of tears.

Sorin and Elara froze on the spot. And so was Brother, who received the slap without even flinching. He totally knew it was coming and didn't even dodge.

The woman left, and Brother stood there in silence. His face was unreadable.

[...oh no.]

Sorin glanced at Elara after hearing her thought. He furrowed his brows.

"Hey, you're here," Brother called them. His face had come back to normal. But Sorin couldn't help but notice a little ripple in his eyes.

"Ahh, I don't know what I should do to this car now," Brother muttered, his tone relaxed, trying to humor things.

"Are you okay?" Elara asked him.

"Yeah," Brother answered. "It's about time she found out."

Sorin kept his mouth shut. He didn't know what had happened, and he couldn't read Brother's mind. Maybe because he wasn't strong enough since he couldn't learn his name either.

"It's not your fault," Elara tapped his shoulder.

Brother shrugged her hand off. "Of course it is. I cheated on her. I deserved that."

Huh.

Well, Brother's appearance made him come off as a playboy. He was the type of person who could pull any woman he wanted with just a smile.

But after Sorin saw his rage because the murderer used his lover's face, he thought he wasn't that kind of person. He was disappointed.

Elara sharply sighed.

"How is it your fault when you dated your wife's reincarnation, who is dying from cancer? She had no one in this world. Should you let her die alone because you're also dating her other reincarnation?"

Sorin widened his eyes as he turned at Elara. He then turned to Brother, who smiled at them.

"Yeah, yeah. Reincarnation sucks," Brother shrugged. He opened the car's door and said, "Anyways, I'll go visit her now. The other her. She needs me."

Elara nodded while Sorin stayed on the spot.

"Sorin's last day with us is tomorrow? Let's meet again with the other members then. I'll be there," Brother entered the car and waved at them. He left driving the red car alone, leaving the silence between Sorin and Elara.

Without words, they resume walking.

Amidst the urban bustle, the park offered a serene escape. Children's laughter echoed as they played under the warm sun. Couples strolled along tree-lined paths, sharing tender moments.

Birds chirped melodies while the distant hum of traffic created a unique harmony, a blend of nature and city life.

After a bit, Sorin took a deep breath. He decided to ask. But still, he couldn't word his question properly. "What... is..."

"My unique reign is time," Elara suddenly said. She then asked, "Have you ever heard of the saying that time is not linear?"

Sorin turned at her, waiting for her next explanation.

"Well, reincarnation is also not linear," she said. "You can be reincarnated as two people who live at the same time. It won't be a problem because you don't have your memory from your previous life."

Sorin stopped walking. Now he understood everything.

The memory of Brother's rage started to flood his mind. An immortal... he was some kind of an evangelic being. Yet he was also a man who was stuck between two worlds.

Sovereigns...

They were such miserable beings.
