"Before Meg died, she said sunrise," Dean said. "What could that mean?"
"Maybe something is going to happen at sunrise?" Sammy responded. They had been driving for hours and finally stopped on the side of the road because Dean had to take a leak. Now they stood at the trunk stretching their legs.
"Or maybe it's the name of a place like a bakery or a grocery store?" Mak said.
"Oh yeah cause they're totally holding dad in a bakery. He's in the back by the puff pastries." Dean remarked sarcastically.
"It was a fucking analogy." Mak said, shooting Dean a look. Sammy chuckled to himself.
Bobby had given Sam the book of Solomon and he had his nose in it the whole ride. Mak turned to the trunk surprised to see there was no kind of warding.
"Hey do you guys have a marker or some kind of chalk?" She asked.
"I think so," Sammy said walking back to the front of the car.
"Why?" Dean asked.
"We're going after demons, we need to have some type of warding especially in the place we're keeping all our weapons." Mak responded.
"That's not the why I was asking about." Dean said he was now standing right next to her.
"Why what then?" She asked.
"Why did you come with us? Why won't you let your dad protect you?" He asked, his deep green eyes piercing her soul.
"Would you?" She asked.
"That's different," he said.
"How?" She asked. "Because you've been in the field and I haven't? Well I hate to break it to you but one that's not my fault and two I've read every book, journal, and lore about almost everything on this planet. I'm wasting away sitting in that house when I could be out helping hunters instead of hearing about their deaths."
"This isn't your fight Mak," he repeated, taking a step closer to her. If she moved forward just a step they'd be chest to chest. The tone in his voice was soft and serious.
"I don't care," she responded, looking into his eyes. She could see the deep concern but was confused as to why he was trying so hard to keep her out of this. He was a hunter, he'd lost people too. He should understand.
"I found this marker," Sammy said, approaching the two. When he saw them he closed his mouth and dropped his hand. "Sorry I'll give you two a minute,"
"No," Mak spoke. "We're done," she held out her hand for the marker. Sammy gave it to her and she uncapped the end.
"What are you doing?" Dean asked as she drew an anti demon lock on each side of the trunk.
"It's a lock, it'll keep demons out of the trunk." She said.
"A good place to keep the colt," Sammy said.
"Hell no," Dean responded.
"We're not taking it with us." Sammy said.
"What if we run into yellow eyes, we pop him right there." Dean said.
"We only have two bullets left. Dad wouldn't want us to bring it." Sammy said.
"And how would you know what he would want? All you do is fight every time you see him." Dean shot. Sammy took a step back looking at Fean. That had struck a nerve.
"I agree with Sammy," Mak spoke. "If we take it and this yellow eyes guy isn't there then it's an unnecessary risk."
"Or it saves our ass," Dean said.
"Mak knows how to exorcise them, we'll be fine." Sammy said.
"Why are you being like this?" Dean asked frustrated.
"Like what Dean?" Sammy asked.
"Like dad," Dean exclaimed. Mak watched confused. "You both are so consumed by this obsession that you'll risk anything to kill this thing. Even if it's your own lives."
"I thought that was the mission. You pulled me out of school for this remember?" Sammy shot back.
"Keep this up and I'm gonna be the one that buries you both!" Dean exclaimed in a tone that scared Mak. His eyes full of pain and anger, his cheeks and lips tightened. Dean was pissed. She didn't understand the situation, but she knew what it was like to lose someone to a demon and that struck her heart.
Dean sighed and pulled the colt out of the inside of his jacket. He then put it in the trunk and shut it. Without saying a word he walked to the drivers side door and got in the car. Mak looked at Sammy who just shrugged and the two got in the car. It took almost a days drive to get to Jefferson, Missouri. When they did, they followed the road to the river and parked in a large parking lot by the wharf.
"I still think sunrise is important, we're missing something." Mak said as they got out of the vehicle.
"Who knows, maybe the demon scrambled her brain a little and she didn't know what she was talking about." Sammy said.
"No, that doesn't happen after a low level demon possession. The hosts return back to normal with gaps of memory loss. Physically that's another story though." Mak imputed.
"We'll we don't know until start looking," Dean opened the trunk and grabbed two duffle bags. One of which he handed to Sam. "Are you packing?" Dean asked.
Mak nodded. She had two desert eagles stuck into her back waistband both loaded. The two grabbed the duffle bags and walked down the park looking for anyone or anything that seemed suspicious. Finally Mak turned the corner and it clicked.
"Guys," she said holding up her hand to stop them.
"What'd you find?" Dean asked.
"Look, that apartment complex, it's called Sunrise apartments." She said.
"You think they're keeping dad in an apartment complex?" Sammy asked.
"It's a smart move, a lot of ready and available meat suits. Plus a lot of casualties if we do anything crazy. They're trying to back us into a corner." Mak said.
"Well let's blow that corner up," Dean said walking towards the entrance.
"Wait!" Mak exclaimed grabbing his arm and pulling him back behind the bush where they were standing. "You can't just barge in there. These demons could literally be anywhere and if this is as serious of a demon as I think, all his henchmen probably know what your faces look like."
"Okay, so what do we do?" Sammy asked. Mak looked around the building. "All first responders are on scene within seven minutes of calling. Which means if we can go in and set off an alarm, I will go in, set off the fire alarm and start searching while you guys wait outside, snag some disguises and meet me inside."
"Hell no," Dean refused.
"Why not?" Mak asked.
"I'm not letting you go in by yourself." He said.
"We don't have a choice, the demons know what you look like. They don't know me." She said.
"She's got a point Dean. If anyone can go in and find dad, it's her." Sammy said.
Dean sighed. "Fine but once you pull that alarm, you stay out until Sam and I get there… got it?"
"Fine," she said. She then turned and walked towards the apartments. With ease she walked past many of the tenants though she could feel goosebumps form on her neck knowing that any of these people could be possessed and try to kill her at anytime. Aha had to remain calm, as long as she looked and acted like she belonged. She casually jogged up the steps to a set of double doors that opened up into a foyer. She quickly glanced around the foyer making sure no one was in view as she walked over to the red fire alarm on the yellow wall. She pulled it and a bell rang out. People began to pile out of their apartments to the foyer and outside. She followed the crowd outside and approached the boys.
"Most fire departments keep spare gear in their trucks. It'll be a locked compartment on the outside, Sammy you'll need to pick the lock and get it so we can sneak in." Mak said as she stepped behind the bush then turned to watch.
"How do you know that?" Sammy asked surprised.
"I dated a firefighter awhile back," she answered. Dean stood from his crouching position and looked at her. Sammy did the same then looked at Dean with a confused yet amused look.
"And how did that work out?" Sammy chuckled.
"Well he's not here ain't he?" She remarked.
Sammy chuckled. "I swear you sound just like your dad."
"Ew," both Mak and Dean looked at Sammy in disgust.
"What?" He asked, shrugging his shoulders.
"Shh, there they are!" Mak said then looked down at her watch. "Right on time," Sammy walked to them, and skillfully dodged both firefighters and civilians bringing them back gear to put on over their clothes.
"Ready?" Dean asked and Mak nodded. She followed them to the building. Once inside, Dean stood aside and let Sammy head up the stairs first though he held up his hand to stop Mak. "No matter what happens, if I tell you to run, then run."
"Dean I'll be fine," she said and tried to move forward. Dean stopped her once more.
"I'm serious Makenna." Mak looked deeper into his face when he said her full name. She took in the seriousness and just nodded. "Stay behind me," she nodded again and he turned back to the stairs. She followed Dean down every hallway and into every apartment looking for John. She tried to push the irritation towards Dean aside. Mak didn't understand why he was being so controlling over her, she was only a year younger than he and it's not like they were together. He was a hunter, and as was she so what was he acting like this?
At the third floor, they had stopped running into people trying to leave and the hallways became eerie. Sam and Dean walked by each door with the EMF detector getting nothing Mak was beginning to think she had been wrong about the whole situation. Maybe sunrise was a time?
Dean held the detector up to a door and it went haywire catching heir attention. He knocked on a door and no one answered so he kicked it in. The three rushed inside to find Dean had kicked the door and hit a brunette in a pink shirt, her husband standing at the bedroom door. A moment of panic spread through Mak and she rushed to help the woman. However as Mak bent down, the woman's eyes turned black.
"Demons!" Mak yelled out as the woman grabbed Mak's arm and threw her in the ground. The woman climbed on top of her holding a knife to her throat. Adrenaline rushed through Mak as she swung her arms under the woman's and out causing the demon to lose her balance. Mak then kneed the demon up and over her head. Mak scrambled then grabbed the demon pulling it up and over to the closet, hitting and punching as she needed. Mak and Sammy threw the demons in the closet and Dean quickly closed the door behind them. Mak pushed against the door as the demons fought back against the door.
"Sammy the salt!" She exclaimed.
Sam ran over to their duffle bag pulling out a large tin of salt. He handed it to Mak who had begun the exorcism incantation. Sam poured the salt in front of their feet and the demons stopped fighting against the door. Two loud demonic screams pierced Mak's ears before she could finish the incantation and she could see black smoke seeping through the floor boards.
"Guys they just left the meat suits we gotta hurry," Mak said and the boys stripped out of the firefighter gear. Mak did the same. Sammy ran to the bedroom and they followed. On the bed Mak saw John Winchester tied to the bedposts. The boys ran to his arms.
"Wait," Mak said stopping the boys.
"What?" Dean asked as she pulled out a flask of holy water. "You think he's possessed?"
"Maybe, you said they're after the colt, they'll do anything." Mak responded.
Dean watched her cautiously as she sprinkled the water over John's chest. Nothing happened. The three tugged at the ropes when John woke up coughing.
"Did you just sprinkle holy water on me?" He said in a rough, raspy voice.
"Sorry, dad, better safe than sorry," Dean responded. Both Dean and Sam got under John's arms and helped him up.
"Hurry guys we got to go!" Mak said, opening the bedroom door to go back to the front door. As the boys got to the living room, the door was kicked in and a man in a firefighter walked in followed by a man in a suit both with black eyes.
"Mak!" Dean exclaimed and grabbed her arm pulling her back. "Help Sam, run!"
"Dean," she wanted to stay and help him fight, he couldn't face these demons alone.
"I said run!" He yelled at her. She promised she'd listen, she had to do as he asked. She turned and grabbed John's arm and helped Sammy get him out the window and onto the fire escape. John was still half awake and barely coherent and she felt a twinge of guilt as she pushed him down the fire escape to the sidewalk below but it quickly passed when she remembered who she was helping. Sammy picked up John as Mak jumped down. Before she went to help John, she looked back up at the fire escape hoping to find Dean climbing out of the window. Relief washed over here when she saw him climbing down behind them. That relief was short-lived however. She had not seen the man running at her until his large fist connected with her cheek bone cracking her bones. In a painful thud she fell to the ground still not seeing her attacker until he was on top of her holding his hand so tightly around her throat she couldn't breath. She grabbed at his hand and tried to fight with all her might to push him off of her.
The brown haired younger looking man held up his fist and brought it down onto her face over and over again, pain shooting through her face until she became numb. She couldn't tell where the warm liquid was coming from on her face but knew it was dripping down her neck. A metallic taste filled her mouth and her vision was so blurry she couldn't see the man anymore. Her brain felt foggy and she couldn't react in time to block the next punch. Mak could feel her skin beginning to swell and throb. Out of nowhere a loud explosion sound and the pressure Mak felt on her and around her neck finally released. Mak gasped for breath spitting liquid out of her mouth. Large arms surrounded Mak and pulled her to her feet.
"Hey, Mak look at me," Dean's voice sounded. Mak could barely see out of her left eye and felt as if one push would knock her over. Disoriented and dizzy she tried to focus but she could see three different Dean's standing in front of her. "Come on baby look at me,"
Mak wasn't sure if the concussion she probably had was causing her to hear Dean say things or if she was actually hearing him correctly. She slumped into his embrace as Dean tried to hold her upright.
"Come on Mak you gotta stay with me, we gotta go." he said.
"Dean, I'm okay," she lied trying to stand and walk. When she stumbled and tripped over her own feet, she felt Dean's arms under her legs as he picked her up. "I'm okay, Dean," she said again resting her head against his chest.
"I know baby I know," he said softly. "You did good, okay, just rest easy."
Dean carried Mak to the Impala and Sam carried John. Sammy sat with Mak in the back seat holding her head away from the window as Dean drove hours into thick woods. Eventually they came across an old hunting cabin of John's. Dean pulled in and parked. Sammy helped the now cognitive John into the cabin as Dean approached Mak. He opened the door then leaned down to pick her up. He then carried her inside to the couch. Sammy came from the back room and locked the door behind them making sure to check if anyone was watching them. He then looked through the cabinets grabbing all the containers of salt he could find and lined all the doors and windows with it. Dean sat Mak on the couch who was becoming more conscious by the second.
"Where are we?" she asked as Dean approached the couch, a baggie of ice in hand.
"Safe," he responded, a look she didn't recognize covered his face.
She winced as the cool ice cubes touched her throbbing face.
"Be careful," Dean said and she nodded. He placed his other hand on her face and examined it more closely. "He got you good,"
"Nothing I can't handle," Mak smirked.
"How are you feeling?" Sammy asked approaching her.
"Better now," she said. "Hey where's John? Is he okay?"
"Yeah he's good, just resting in the back room." Sammy answered.
"Okay, good," Mak said.
"Hey you kicked ass out there today," Sammy said. "We should bring you on hunts more often."
Mak smiled. "I don't know I think I just slow you guys down,"
"I hate to admit it but Sammy's right," Dean said. His eyes turned a soft green like they did when he was relaxed, the muscles in his face were relaxed as well though his brow was perplexed. "You helped us save our dad so thank you Mak. I was wrong, you're a damn good hunter."
Mak scoffed. "Thanks guys, it was nice while it lasted. My dad is never going to let me hunt again."
Dean let out a smirk. "He's just trying to protect you, he cares about you. We all do."
What did Dean mean by that? Was it a friendly kind of care? Did he really just care about her as a friend? Did he care about her as something more?
"Dean's right," Sammy said. "Hell some of my best memories are hanging out with you at your house."
Mak smiled and looked down at her lap. Blood had dripped down into the collar of her shirt. "Thanks guys."
Sammy nodded and stood up. She turned so her back was against the couch and laid back holding the ice against her head. Dean stood up and followed Sammy. Mak let the ice sit for a couple of hours, significantly bringing the swelling down in her face. She could now open her left eye and see clearly. Eventually Dean came back over and sat on the couch next to her. He swung his arm back to rest on the back of the couch, his fingers barely tickling her neck.
"What are you doing?" she asked her eyes closed.
He grabbed the back of her neck and began to rub it. "You got your first shiner."
"Please, this isn't the first time I've been hit." she laughed.
"Really?" he asked.
"Yup," she answered.
"Well now you have to tell me the story." he smirked.
"Isabella Dominguez, fifth grade. She got mad cause I stole her boyfriend." she said.
Dean chuckled. "What'd you guys do? Exchange juice boxes?" he joked.
"Played marbles," she smiled and Dean let out a soft chuckle. She took off the icepack and looked at Dean. "Though it is my first time getting hit by a man."
"It shouldn't have happened in the first place." he said softly.
"It is what it is," she responded. "I just-" she began then stopped. "Never mind," she turned her back so it was flat against the couch and laid her head back placing the ice pack back on her face.
"What is it?" he asked.
She shrugged. "I don't want other kids to grow up like I did, like we did. Even if its just one kid I'm saving from that experience it's all worth it to me."
Dean nodded.
Mak heard the floorboards creak and looked behind her to see John Winchester limping into the room.
"Dad," Dean said standing up. "How are you feeling?"
It had been a long time since she'd seen John Winchester.
"I'm okay," his deep voice sounded. "I'm proud of you boys,"
She looked at Dean. It broke her heart. She knew how devoted he was to John and yet John never said anything about it. Never acknowledged what Dean had given up. Now he wants to say he's proud? After over twenty years he wants to say he's proud of how messed up their lives have been?
"Thanks," Dean let out a breath. He always had that little boy loyalty to his father. Suddenly the lights began to flicker and Mak stood up. John ran to the window.
"Demons they're here," he said looking out the window then back at the three. "Sammy salt all of the doors and windows.
"Already did," Sammy said.
"Check them again," John said. Sammy left down the hall.
"Do you have the gun?" John asked Dean still looking out the window. There was something in his behavior that was throwing Mak off. Not to mention he didn't even acknowledge her, like he barely even knew he was in the room.
"Yeah," Dean said pulling the colt out of his belt. "I used a bullet though, to save Mak."
"That's okay, I'm a good shot." John said then looked at Dean holding his hand out for the gun. Dean held out his arm but Mak grabbed it.
"Dean," she said softly. Dean looked at her confused as she shook her head. He then swallowed and realized what she was trying to say.
"What are you waiting for, quit making eyes at your girlfriend and give me the gun." John smiled.
"You're not my dad," Dean said cocking the gun the pointing it at John. "Mak get behind me," Mak did as told taking a step behind Dean. John chuckled.
"Of course I am," he said. "Dean we don't have time for this."
"Whoa what's going on?" Sammy asked coming back into the room.
"Your brother is going nuts," John said.
"That's not dad Sammy," Dean said.
"What do you mean?" Sammy asked.
"Dad wouldn't be okay with me wasting a bullet." Dean said. "Dad doesn't call Mak my girlfriend, he always says she'd be better off with Sammy then with me." The last part caught Mak by surprise. John really said that?
"Come on Sammy it's me," John pleaded. Mak looked at Sammy who was struggling to decide who to believe. Though eventually he walked over to Dean, completely blocking Mak from John.
John let out a chuckle. "Fine,"
With the flick of his wrist an invisible force sent the three flying back against the wall. Mak groaned in pain as her head hit the wooden wall and her vision went blurry again.
"Well you got me," John said.
"But the holy water," Mak struggled.
"Please," he said approaching her, his face so close to hers she could smell his breath. "You think a trick like that is going to work against me?" He looked at her up and down sending a revolting feeling through Mak's stomach. "You're a pretty little thing aren't you," What was it with demons calling her pretty little things. John grabbed Mak's chin moving her head around. "I might have to save you for later." Mak tired to pull her head out of his grasp, tried to move her body but she couldn't. The force was pushing her against the wall as it was Sammy and Dean. So did the only thing she could think of and spat in his face.
"Feisty," John said. "I like it," he whipped her spit off his face then sent an upper cut to her stomach.
"Leave her alone!" Dean screamed as Mak gasped for air, her stomach aching.
"Oh Dean," John chuckled approaching him. John through a punch connecting with Deans face and he coughed up blood. Mak fought as hard as she could against this force trying to get to him. "I owe you a little something for exorcising my daughter. Oh and killing my son in the parking lot."
"You're welcome," Dean spat. He was struggling to keep his head up, blood slowly dripping from his mouth. Fear pumped through her veins.
"You know what it's like to lose family? Maybe I should kill one of yours," John said leaning over Dean. "Oh wait," he chuckled. "I already did,"
This must b the yellow eyed demon, the one who killed their mom. Mak looked over at Sam who was desperately trying to fight the force.
"We've been looking for you," Sammy said. "I'm gonna kill you,"
John chuckled. "Here," he put the colt on the table in front of Sammy. "Make it float to you psychic boy."
Psychic boy? What was that supposed to mean?
"Your dad is in here with me," John chuckled then looked at Dean. "He says 'Hi' and he's gonna taste your blood."
"Why?" Sammy asked trying to get attention away from Dean.
"Why what?" John asked.
"Why'd you kill them?" Sammy asked.
"You mean Jess and your mom? Oh right here's why, you see they got in the way." John turned to Sammy. "They got in the way of my plans for you. Your mom wasn't going to raise you as a hunter, you about to ask Jess to marry you, I needed you in the life."
"Alright enough with the monologue," Mak spat. "I'm getting bored."
John chuckled and walked over to her. "You're a fascinating one. You know John always did say you'd be better off with Sammy. Here you are protecting him. Oh but wait, doesn't Dean have feelings for you...?" John chuckled. "You two as kids, inseparable, always following each other around and now what? you guys are sleeping together?" How the hell did he know that? "What surprised John knows? Oh sorry, I forgot Sammy didn't know. What a little whore,"
"Hey!" Dean yelled angrily. "Are we going to get this over with or what?"
"Ah, ah, ah," John tsked. "Not just yet, I saved the best for last. I mean aren't you tired of running around trying to pretend Sam's not John's favorite? Always running and fighting, when are you going to realize your family doesn't need you like you need them."
Mak didn't want to believe a word out of this demon's mouth... they lie! But how did John know about her and Dean?
"I bet your always proud of your kids," Dean said. "Oh wait, I wasted them." A twisted smirk appeared on Dean's face that scared her. He was provoking the demon to get it's attention away from her. Why the hell was he doing this?
John looked down then back at Dean with a smirk. Suddenly dean cried out in pain throwing his head back against the wall.
"Dean!" Mak cried out tears forming in her eyes.
Dean gasped for breath as red liquid poured out of the left side of Dean's chest.
"Dean!" Mak cried out hysterically fighting against the force holding her back.
"Dad don't let him kill me!" Dean cried out. "Dad please!"
Mak watched anxiously between Dean and John hoping, praying that John could take control and save Dean. She could see the veins in his neck popping out as he yelled out in pain. Then Dean went limp.
"Dean!" Mak cried tears pouring out of her eyes. He couldn't be dead! Not Dean! She wasn't going to let Dean die.
"Stop it," John said quietly. "Stop it,"
Suddenly Sammy fell from the wall. She looked at him confused and he did the same. Though he quickly ran to the cult and cocked it pointing it at John.
"You kill me you kill your daddy," he said.
"I know," Sam remarked. He pointed the gun at Johns leg and pulled the trigger. John fell to the ground and the force holding Mak and Dean vanished. Painfully, Mak ran to Dean's side.
"Dean, look at me," she cried holding his face. Dazed and disoriented he blinked his eyes. "You're gonna be okay, were gonna get you some help." Without thinking she tore off her shirt pressing it against Dean's chest hoping to put enough pressure to stop the massive bleeding. Luckily she was wearing a cute bra that could pass as a clubbing top.
"Where's my dad?" he asked trying to get up. Mak pushed him back down.
"Sammy's checking on him okay, stop moving." she said wiping the tears from her face. Her hands were covered in Dean's blood and the thought frightened her to her very core.
"Are you okay?" he asked pain written all over his face.
"Yes, Dean, I'm okay." she lied.
"Sammy you have to shoot me!" John hollered. "I can still feel it, he's still alive shoot me!"
"Don't do it Sammy," Dean pleaded trying to get up though Mak kept pushing him back down. Sammy stood there holding the gun towards John.
"I can't hold him much longer!" John cried.
With an irritated grunt Sammy lowered the gun. John's mouth opened and black smoke came pouring out of it and into the floorboards. Finally the demon was gone. Sammy rushed to John's side. The demon was gone.
"Sam we have to get him to a hospital," Mak said as Dean fell back relieved onto the floor.
"I'll get the car," he said frantically.
"Come here," She pulled Dean's arm over her shoulder and continued to press her shirt against his chest, though now it was starting to become soaked with blood. Carefully and painfully, they stood up and walked outside where Sammy had the impala doors open. She walked Dean to the car and he sunk into the seat. She ran to the other side and got into the backseat with him continuing to apply pressure as his head sank into the window. She didn't bother to put a seatbelt on as both John and Sam got into the car.
"You're going to be okay," Mak whispered, tears in her eyes as Dean groaned. Sammy threw the car in drive and sped off to the nearest hospital.
"Thank you," Dean said quietly grabbing Mak's hand.
"Shh, just rest." She said. Dean's green eyes made their way to hers and he just stared as she frantically tried to stop the blood. He lifted his right arm to her face pulling back stray messy hairs and pulling them behind her ear. He then placed his palm against her cheek noticing the bloody handprint he left on her. He could feel his consciousness fading and feared he wasn't going to make it to the hospital. He knew she was beautiful. She was the most beautiful girl he's ever met. He wanted to be more with her, be more for her. She deserved so much more than he could ever give her. That's why he never asked her out. Not because he didn't love her, he did. He'd been in love with her since the minute he saw her curly little pigtails. She didn't deserve this life.
"Why didn't you kill me?" John asked Sammy.
"Why is that even a question?" Sammy responded.
"Killing that demon comes first, before me, before everything." John said.
"No sir," Sammy responded. "Not before everything, we still have the colt, we found him once, we can do it again."
Mak didn't know what happened next. She saw a flash of light across the seat and then a crash propelled the car sideways sending her flying through Dean's window. Bones snapped, glass stabbed, and she choked on blood.
