Chapter 9: Reckoning

Flashback

Naruto's young body fell on the hard ground with his back. His hands were spread around, his breathing labored, chest pumping up and down with ferocity. His whole body ached with bruises, and small amounts of blood. The world was spinning a little. Fugaku's kick to the forehead had left him a disoriented.

Fugaku glanced down at the young boy, and then folded his hands across his chest. Itachi was a genius but Naruto was much more. A little darker due to his loneliness and pain at losing everyone, but he was no less of a skilled child than Itachi. But, Fugaku wouldn't tell him that. He would always say Itachi was better, to ensure this child rose higher than a genius. For power was the only thing he needed to survive, and for the sake of the Uchiha.

He feared, without power, the Uchiha clan wouldn't survive the days to come. Dark clouds had already gathered above, and the pregnant atmosphere threatened to spill the blood of many. He didn't even know how long his life would be. With the little time he had, he had to prepare the Uchiha's clan future.

"You've done well for today," Fugaku said, leaning down to give Naruto a hand.

"I want to lay down a little more…" Naruto pleaded with Fugaku, with his eyes still closed, as he still felt the need to gather his chaotic thoughts.

"It's late," Fugaku replied. He stared down and Naruto took his hand. The boy just sat up, legs folded, his breathing still labored.

The more Fugaku trained Naruto, the more he realized the boy was built differently. Fugaku wanted to built Naruto's endurance. Itachi was smooth, fought strategically. Naruto was capable of this much, but would only do it in exceptional circumstances. He has had the young boy fight others his age, and he just lunged like a mad dog. He was Uchiha, he said. It was unnecessary for him to bother working his mind on those less skilled than he was.

It was amusing at times. But when he came to face him, he displayed a calculating mind. Fugaku wished Naruto would employ that more. He was nonetheless glad, Naruto wasn't an idiot.

"I wish you'd put the same effort you do with me when you spar with Itachi," Fugaku said with a slight shake of his head.

"Itachi is better than me," Naruto frowned, folded his hands across his chest. "I do the best I can."

"I disagree. You don't try harder. And I don't think it is an inferiority complex."

Naruto had no response.

"Come on," Fugaku sighed. He picked up the boy, and put him on his back. It was their daily routine every time they trained in the woods together. He noted, ever since Itachi enrolled at the academy, he was spending more time with Naruto.

On Fugaku's huge shoulders, and warm back, Naruto rested his head and closed his eyes.

It always felt special being on Fugaku's back. He felt, he had a father. He dared not call him that. But that was what he felt. He truly cherished these moments. They made him feel that he wasn't alone, and there was someone who cared for him. Despite the pain he felt, he felt comforted being carried by his father.

They may as well be father and son as they walked through the Uchiha grounds. The newly built home was silent, compared to their former grounds. The atmosphere was a little darker. The joy seemed to have been sucked away by an evil creature that fought day and night against them.

Itachi would often say, it was only a matter of time before some members of their clan drew their weapons to the fight the enemy.

When they arrived at the house, Itachi was at the back porch, playing with the little Sasuke. Naruto only heard giggles from the boy he saw as a younger brother.

Fugaku dropped him and he walked over to the brothers. He stopped over, looked down at the young boy. Sasuke hated everyone who got closer to Itachi. It was a little different with him because he'd started to recognize faces with him being around. But even Itachi really didn't like handing over his beloved brother to anyone else.

Without saying anything, he poked his index finger on the boy's cheeks. A few soft giggles and Naruto had a warm smile on his lips.

"You look worse today." Itachi commented in a quiet tone.

Naruto shrugged indifferently. "I couldn't tell," he said. "And the academy?" He asked with genuine curiosity. He'd been told he would not go to the academy. There was only room for one Uchiha to shine, and his role was with the clan.

Naruto didn't know what it was like to play with other children. He didn't even play with Itachi. Their play involved throwing kunai in target practices. Sometimes, survival games in the forest of death.

Before Itachi could reply, Mikoto appeared in the door frame.

"Dear, to bath and get changed."

Naruto wanted to pretend he didn't hear her, but he really couldn't. "I took all my clothes." He said.

"Itachi will give you some. You can't wait and eat dinner like that."

End

Perhaps it was the curse of being blessed with the power the Uchiha wielded, but Fugaku was starting to think the clan wasn't going to get a break. If there was a god, he had long abandoned them to this misery. Each day felt like the clan was edging closer to the edge of a cliff. Each day they took a step back from a fall, they would take two steps forward.

Death, humiliation, and extinction seemed to be calling them. It was his duty, his responsibility to ensure the Uchiha did not face death. It would be a monumental failure and he wasn't sure how he would face his ancestors if he allowed the clan to fall off. Which other clan could claim to be as powerful as the Uchiha? With the Senju extinct, there was no rivalry, and yet, they were flirting with death.

Fugaku had just left Naruto's house. He was supposed to stroll through the streets, settling his thoughts before going home to his wife. But he was ambushed by Inabi. It was a gang of three, and they looked deadly serious, maybe even a little smug.

It didn't make Fugaku happy. While his expression was blank, his heart thumped with dread.

"Give us the order to arrest, Danzo-sama, Fugaku-sama." Inabi demanded without any preamble.

Fugaku folded his hands across his chest. "Let us not talk here," he said. They wouldn't make a demand without anything spurring them. That Danzo would give them a reason wasn't even an impossibility.

"Let's go to Military Police," Yashiro said. "It will make sense once you see it."

Fugaku nodded. "Lead the way."

They did. And as they slowly walked, Inabi asked. "Has Naruto returned?"

"Yes." Fugaku glanced at Inabi for a second before looking ahead. He didn't say anything else and no other question was asked.

They arrived at an interrogation chamber. It was a bloody scene. Tied, broken, and almost lifeless was a man Fugaku didn't know. But he was wearing Military Police uniform. His state, gave him the impression that he was a spy, and if they were demanding that they be given permission to arrest Danzo, the man must have sent him.

Wasn't it enough that Danzo was getting information from Itachi? How many more spies did he have within the clan? The question left a bitter taste in his mouth.

"Who is he?"

"Root spy." Inabi replied with contempt. He was spitting as he replied. "We have been watching him for a while now. He was posing as Kagen in the logistics department for a while now. He won't say anything, but he doesn't need to. They killed one of our own and replaced him."

A deathly silent stilled the room. Fugaku balled his fists. The dread spread through from his heart. This was the tipping point. How he reacted would determine whether the Uchiha survived or not.

"If he wont talk, how do you know he is from Danzo?" Fugaku asked. Despite the situation, he remained calm. The man was unconscious. Without question, the torture had been too much. His body looked shattered. It was as if he'd been stepped over by one of the Kyubi's paws.

"Root Anbu have a mark on their tongue. He has one of them."

"This is why he can't talk." Fugaku came to the realization.

He imagined tomorrow would become one hell of a day. Inabi would not rest until Danzo was arrested. The clan would hold a meeting, and the issue would be brought out. If he had just spied on one of them, then it could have been a small matter, but they killed one of them. That was a murder that had to be paid by blood.

"On what charges do you want to arrest Danzo?" Fugaku realized if he was being dismissive and obstructive, Inabi would resort to extreme measures. Worse, if Naruto found out about this, he may change his mind about attacking some people.

"Illegally spying on the Uchiha and murder."

"The evidence of illegally spying is right before me. It won't be enough to arrest him. What we have now is a missing Uchiha. They took his place, and we can assume they did it. It is all circumstantial at the moment." Fugaku said calmly. "We can't arrest him. But I will permit you to question him. Allow me to warn the Sandaime first. Danzo still holds the title of village Councilor."

Fugaku wasn't always like this, and given his lack of resistance, Inabi was immediately suspicious. Or maybe he was just tired like the rest of them.

"You're being cooperative about this," He said.

"If they killed one of us, it is a huge crime. If the Sandaime knew about it, it is a treachery even I wouldn't overlook." Fugaku didn't think the Sandaime Hokage had any hand in it but it was his reaction to everything that would be the defining moment.

Fugaku was willing to do anything to ensure his clan's survival. The present meant nothing. The most important thing was the future. The kind of tomorrow that would await Sasuke when he became a teenager and an adult. In such circumstances, he couldn't depend on Itachi—for his son would always pick an outcome that favored the village above all things.

He wanted a balanced approach. He could be selfish. It was his duty as clan head.

"Besides, this isn't something that can simply be overlooked." Fugaku sighed deeply. He was sad, but not for the reasons Inabi would think. "Inform Shisui. The seal on his tongue keeps him from talking. The Sharingan can only get him to talk. We need to read his mind. We don't have the capability. If we inform the Yamanaka, they'll know about the Uchiha and that'll create a problem for us. Your only hope is that Danzo speaks."

Inabi frowned. "If he doesn't?"

"We can't do much without any evidence."

Of course, he should have known this much. But Inabi was sure Naruto wouldn't require evidence. That Naruto could suddenly turn to their side wasn't set in stone. But he would still believe them.

"We will bring him in and you can question him."

"That is acceptable."

"Root Anbu don't have the same protections as regular Anbu. But they are still Anbu. In order to obtain evidence, we'll need a few men to search Root bases."

"No." Fugaku said sternly. "Bring Danzo in. we will question him. I will require permission from the Hokage to venture into Root HQ."

After saying this much, Fugaku left without giving Inabi the opportunity to respond.

The Following Morning

Had he been late, Hiruzen was certain he would have found Root HQ a tomb for the dead. The passages would have been a too gruesome scene for even him to describe, despite all he has seen throughout the many years he has lived.

Never in Konoha's history has two forces come close to a bloody spree as this one. The tempers were high. The animosity was bubbling inside the hearts of the Uchiha. Without doubt, they believed whatever misfortune fell upon their clan was a massive conspiracy, cooked by the brains of Danzo, and he, as Hokage enabled it all. The latter part was not necessarily false.

Hiruzen shook his head. This was a grave situation. The tension was so thick, a lesser man would suffocate. Yet, everyone still remained still. A wrong movement, and the grey walls would become bloody. Depending on whose blood, it may even spread into the streets.

This was a indeed a dangerous situation; one that shouldn't even happen. He should be angry, but he could only look at each side with disappointment and sadness.

It seemed, they had reached a point of no return. He had hopes. But it was all just naïve thinking. There was now no more room for negotiations.

On the other side, Danzo was surrounded by his Anbu. He was expressionless, as always. Though, Hiruzen was certain there had been a brief look of annoyance when he appeared. It was almost as if he was disturbing some grand play about to unfold. Military police was on the other side, their weapons drawn. Their hateful expressions left a bitter taste in Hiruzen's mouth and exposed just how hopeless the situation was.

Konoha's Anbu surrounded the two groups. He'd brought enough men to subdue them with force if needs be.

The disappointment disappeared from Hiruzen's face and he asked in a stern tone. "Care to explain what is happening? Are you trying to start a civil war?"

"You should have kept the Uchiha in check long ago!" Danzo hissed with contempt instead of answering the question.

Honestly, the contempt was directed at Hiruzen's appearance. The Uchiha had come with Sharingan wielders. Danzo had rubbed his hands when they appeared. He would have slaughtered them all and accuse the Uchiha of a conspiracy and then take the Sharingan for his use. But with the naïve Hokage around, he couldn't proceed.

"I should have shut you long ago… but here we are," Hiruzen replied a bit coldly. "Explain what is happening or I will have all of you arrested. Including you, Danzo."

Inabi took the opportunity to speak. He too shared Danzo's disappointment. He too would have been content with killing everyone here. They came here under orders, and if Danzo was fighting them, anything that happened after was merely a consequence of the man refusing to bow to the authority of Military Police.

A few minutes late, and he would have rid a thorn to the Uchiha. And maybe, there would have been a great reset.

"Last night, we found that one of Danzo's men had been posing as Kagen Uchiha for a while now. We believe that Root killed Kagen and replaced him in order to spy on the Uchiha. We requested permission to arrest Danzo, but it was refused. We were however given permission to bring him in for questioning." Inabi shook his head, glaring at Danzo. "He refused and wanted us to use force. One of our own was murdered, we simply couldn't just leave. Besides that, nobody has a right to refuse to be questioned."

Hiruzen didn't need Danzo to confirm or deny anything—this was within his playbook. And if Fugaku approved it, there must be reason to believe he did it.

Spying would have been okay, but killing an Uchiha was a crime the Uchiha couldn't forgive.

"Danzo is still a village Councilor, and Root handle covert operations. They have the same status as Anbu. You should have sought for my permission."

"Rules do not prohibit us from questioning a village Councilor. If there had been an approved operation from the village, it would have come out during questioning." Inabi replied with annoyance.

He already had the feeling the Sandaime would try to shield Danzo. Worse, he wasn't even trying to question the man on the veracity of the accusation. It just meant he knew or suspected Danzo did indeed do it.

"There will be no fighting. Go summon Fugaku for me. And return to your work. Danzo, follow me to my office." Hiruzen said this and turned around to leave.

He would not leave room for argument. He didn't need to threaten them with insubordination. They would get the message and act accordingly.

Inabi was seething. The matter was going to be hushed down. The Sandaime would make everything go away and issue a lousy apology. And once again, Danzo would get away with injustice against their clan.

He balled his fists and glared at Danzo with hatred. Surely, if this man died, things would be simple. Couldn't he just make the sacrifice right now? If he lunged at Danzo and manage to murder him, wouldn't it make things easy? He could die happy if Danzo went with him.

He glanced at the Sandaime Hokage and then frowned deeply. He was being naïve. It was more than just Danzo. And there was really nothing he could do, for now at least.

"Let's go," he said to his fellow Uchiha.

"Just like that?" Yashiro asked in a whisper.

"Not here," Inabi motioned. The Anbu would read his lips. Even if he whispered, someone might still pick up on it. "We must respect the decision of the Sandaime."

Hokage Office

Danzo wasn't the least bothered about things or how they would turn out. He held all the cards in his hands. So, even as he sat inside of Hiruzen's office, waiting for Fugaku to arrive in the office, he displayed no concern.

"Rules have to be amended, we cannot have Military Police questioning village elders. That should be a power only reserved for the Hokage," Danzo said in a casual manner.

Hiruzen glanced at Danzo. The man's nonchalance about the whole thing irked him. Perhaps he should have just let him fight with the Military Police. He was sitting there, looking smug knowing that things wouldn't get bloody for him. The Uchiha would nonetheless not calm down unless someone paid for the death of a fellow Uchiha.

"That isn't for you to be concerned about," Hiruzen replied, and then leaned against his chair. "Spying would have been fine. It would have been part of your duties. But killing another Uchiha?"

"I don't recall admitting to this."

Hiruzen's eyes sharpened with anger. "I'm not a fool, Danzo! You've always done whatever you wanted and this time, you will not get away with it that easily. I don't need evidence to know you killed Kagen Uchiha. You tried to have me killed!"

"Do you blame me considering the circumstances?"

"Yes. Itachi is already supplying us with information and he has never misled us!" Hiruzen slammed his fist on the desk in anger and frustration. He realized, he'd lost his patience with Danzo. For so long he tolerated the man, but he'd lost it now. Shikaku was making good progress. And what Itachi had told him had revealed there was a possibility of a diplomatic solution. But this, had just burnt all hope and Danzo didn't hide his satisfaction.

At this rate, Hiruzen wasn't even going to deny the fact that Danzo had already decided the Uchiha needed to be removed from Konoha and was going to go down trying to get it done.

"He is a good shinobi, but they sideline him on certain things. He no longer even attend meetings anymore." Danzo was unapologetic. "It doesn't even matter anyway. The Uchiha are planning a revolt. And they must be stopped."

"And your crime?"

"I've only done a covert operation and done what needed to be done for the sake of the village."

Danzo would always reply like that. Hiruzen thought it funny. And he chuckled, but with bitterness. As his laughter died in his throat, Fugaku knocked at the door and entered. The man looked unreadable. He stopped in front of his desk and didn't even spare Danzo a glance.

"I'm sure you already know why I called you."

"Inabi told me." Fugaku replied. "I wish things wouldn't have come to that point. I indeed gave them authorization to request Danzo-sama for questioning regarding the spying on Military Police and the death of Kagen Uchiha."

"I wish you'd spoken to me first. We could have avoided this fiasco. They nearly fought."

"I apologize for it. But Military Police was acting within its powers. I did not anticipate that someone would refuse to cooperate."

Hiruzen sighed deeply. "You wanted Danzo to be questioned regarding the two incidents. He tells me you have one of his agents in custody?"

"Yes."

"You will do as you please with him. I did not authorize the spying on Military Police. Kagen is however another matter."

Fugaku raised an eye brow. "How so?"

"There is a bigger picture!" Danzo intervened. "Members of your clan have betrayed their allegiances to the village and now seek to destroy it. We cannot have such people working in Military Police!"

Fugaku glanced at Danzo and then addressed the man. "I will not deny that but such issues are being addressed. It also doesn't excuse that one of ours was murdered. He did not plan anything. But was simply killed so you could gain access to Military Police Force."

"I did it because you people can't be trusted and I am right!" Danzo wasn't going to bother denying anything since Hiruzen had proved he wouldn't back him.

"How do you want to proceed?"

"The laws are clear. Murder must be punished. Danzo-sama gave an order, the justice would be to arrest him." Fugaku replied as a matter of fact.

Fugaku wasn't necessarily wrong. Yet, Hiruzen could see the need for action. Despicable, but Danzo's actions could still be justified. Whatever he decided, he couldn't simply look at the Uchiha. He needed to think about the whole situation. Then again, things were at this point because they've often overlooked the Uchiha clan.

Before Hiruzen could say anything, Danzo spoke in a harsh tone. "The Uchiha may be founders, but they are not above Konoha. Their actions threaten the very existence of the Leaf!"

True once again. Hiruzen caught himself. He was agreeing with both parties. A true Hokage would come up with a solution. But he knew, if he favored Fugaku, Danzo would resort to extreme lengths and the threat they were trying to avoid would collide with the village. If he favored Danzo, then the collision would be far sooner.

Either way, he was between a rock and a hard place. The scales had been tipped to the point of no return.

How he wished he had the stomach to order Shisui to make everyone who knew forget. The events that occurred would appear as if they never occurred. And Konoha would be safe to continue with its diplomatic efforts.

Hiruzen waved for the Anbu to appear. "Take Danzo with you. We shall have a Council meeting and decide what must be done."

"Again? You're leaving everything to the Council?!" Danzo spat hatefully. "Your cowardice has reached a new low, Hiruzen. You shouldn't be Hokage. Tobirama-sensei made a judgment error when he elected you. You're pathetic excuse for a Hokage!" The war hawk hissed as he stood up.

Hiruzen didn't say anything. Nor did he face Danzo, he just sat there silently as Danzo was ushered away from the office.

The aged Hokage sighed deeply. "I'm sorry things have come to this point. While I think it would be unlikely, but if Danzo doesn't get his way, he'll ensure the Uchiha are driven out of the village."

"It seems to me he is the problem."

"Be as it may," Hiruzen fell silent, gathering his thoughts. "The fact is the Uchiha are planning a rebellion. The Council will have to be informed. Once they have made their views known, I will make a decision that is good for Konoha."

"Of course."

"Just so we are clear, what happens if I tell the Uchiha they can't arrest Danzo?"

"I will lose control over the clan."

Uchiha Compound

A dangerous Uchiha was not the emotionless tool the masses feared. It was just the same principle that applied—simply attaining the Sharingan didn't make one powerful. There were those who awakened the doujutsu and yet, labored with mediocrity. Naruto thought it a shame, and still felt contempt for those who wasted such blessed eyes. After all, there were many who'd kill to awaken the Sharingan. His generation was truly blessed. Not just with the eyes but with skill.

The Uchiha were misunderstood. Naruto didn't know whether it was the lack of knowledge or simply bias. Their power was envied, of course. But that was not the misunderstanding. Uchiha who knew to love were the most dangerous beings out there. It was within the very fiber of their being to grow stronger depending on emotions. It wasn't just love that made them dangerous. Any abundance of emotions, either be love or hatred, it was enough to trigger the maturity of the Sharingan.

It was laughable that despite their greatness, the majority of them were simply ruled by genetics.

For as long as Naruto could remember, he'd tried to defy laws of nature. But with love and fears, came the Sharingan. Frustrations and contempt kept it activated. Love was dangerous—he knew. Not just for the Uchiha, but for everyone. He'd tried to mask it all, for sake of the clan, but he couldn't. And the inability to do so, brought dangers in his thoughts.

Naruto lifted his head and stared at his kitchen ceiling. There wasn't a hint of the smoke that had once filled the air after he burnt the pots and nearly the kitchen. The silence in the house was at times frighteningly sad. Perhaps he'd avoided staying here for too long to avoid thinking about just how lonely the damn house was.

He blinked first and lost the staring contest with the ceiling. He didn't linger about. Not because he couldn't keep his stare, but because he wanted to get some air. The second he stepped outside, he found Shisui; his fellow Uchiha was leaning against the wall, a far away look across his face with hands folded across his chest.

"Nice to see I'm not the only one with problems," Naruto said. He noticed, Shisui hadn't registered his presence until he spoke.

"There are always problems."

"Not ones that give you a headache over how to tell me."

"What makes you think I have something to tell you?" Shisui glanced at Naruto, and removed himself from the wall, but didn't take a step away from it.

"Wild guess," Naruto replied mildly. "I'm going to the Naka River… the flow of water will help me calm."

"Anything I must know?"

"No."

Shisui stared and then walked over to Naruto. They took off to the streets. "Safe journey?"

"Hardly," Naruto smiled with bitterness. "Humiliated myself in front of a Jinchuriki. I should have snapped her legs and let her crawl back home, but she was too skilled. Travel and you realize there are more unknown powers out there," he said with a slight shake of his head.

Shisui laughed. "Seems like you had it rough… how did you even humiliate yourself?"

"I'd rather not say," Naruto said. "All is well in the clan? I had a sleepless night just thinking about things. Had to literally drag the client when thinking something bad might happen while I was away."

To his credit, Shisui didn't even flinch. He already knew what was happening. He hadn't spoken to the Sandaime or Fugaku, but Inabi had made things clear and there was only one outcome.

"You worry too much. You'll be prone to acting recklessly," Shisui cautioned Naruto.

Naruto shrugged in response. "Circumstances force me to worry too much," he said. The streets were not quiet. The parents where on the road, taking their kids to the academy. Some shop owners were setting up shop. "It's amazing isn't it? In less than a year, I have changed this much."

"Really?" Shisui asked, feigning surprise.

Whether Naruto noticed or did not was up for debate. He probed Shisui. "You don't think I've changed?"

"The only thing that has changed is your surroundings. You didn't interact with a lot of people then. But now you do. You still don't have other friends. Love for the clan remains the same."

Naruto didn't offer an immediate response. He retreated to the back of his head, just wondering how he has lived. "Fugaku-sama always said it was my duty to protect the clan. Yet, still told me I was allowed to dream. Circumstances have changed. I really wanted to become head of Military Police Force. But, things have changed. And I realized…" he paused, smiling bitterly, "I lacked ambition. The desire to simply protect the Uchiha is not ambition. It is something that just comes naturally. What happens after the clan is protected? I've realized, my life was pretty hollow. Perhaps that is why I never bothered to say anything during meetings."

Shisui nudged him over the shoulder, and offered a reassuring smile. "You've not changed, in the strict sense; you've just grown and adapted to the circumstances. But it is good you think this way." He then chuckled nervously. "But I do worry if you had ambitions, you'd act on it."

"What is wrong with that?"

"You were just fine being passive. But now you're a little proactive. The problem is that you're Naruto."

"It's not like I'll be seeking destruction wherever I go."

"You think war is a natural consequence of living. You'd have no problem in slaughtering thousands. You think we Uchiha are special people. You're not thinking about it now, but if we become settled, you'll start thinking we should take a leading role. You're fine with diplomatic means, but simply because the alternative threatens the Uchiha. Your sense of right and wrong is narrowed down to what is good for the Uchiha, and a little bit of laws that govern the village."

Naruto shot Shisui a look. "You sure went through the history books." But he smiled, a bit of a twisted smile. "Well, yeah, there'll be some destruction. But I'm not irrational."

"When it suits you."

Naruto shrugged. "Having ambition is good. Besides, I can't always depend on Fugaku-sama to give me guidance. I must stand on my own."

It was already clear to Shisui, but Fugaku was probably the only man his fellow Uchiha respected above all men. Then again, Fugaku was more than just a teacher, but also a father figure to Naruto.

The air was cold around the river. Naruto jumped down without care and Shisui followed. Both crashed into the water. Shisui however had chakra under his feet. Naruto took a dive, even deep within the waters. He emerged, wet, hair covering parts of his face.

"You could have gotten hurt."

Naruto rolled his eyes and floated above the water by channeling chakra over his body. "Is there something you wish to tell me?" He asked in a quiet tone.

"It seems things have reached a boiling point. Last night, Inabi captured a Root agent who was spying on Military Police. It seems, they killed Kagen and then replaced him with a Root agent. A battle nearly occurred in Root bases. It is unlikely the village will agree with Danzo being arrested. They are not going to accept it. Danzo killed one of us."

Naruto was silent for a couple of minutes.

"Kagen was in the logistics department, wasn't it?"

It didn't come as a surprise. Naruto knew Military Police in and out. "Yes."

"I can't say I'm outraged. One would expect such action from a pathetic excuse for a shinobi such as Danzo. It probably stings the Nidaime chose the Professor over him… well, that worked out delightfully for us. If he had been in charge, some of us wouldn't have been born," Naruto said in a measured tone. "To murder a member of Military Police should be deemed as treason. It is a crime against the Uchiha. If Inabi and everyone demand Danzo must be hanged, I agree. Regardless of the circumstances, he killed one of us. He too must be killed. It is as simple as that. Perhaps we can even raise the connection between him and Orochimaru in the kidnapping of children for experiments."

"And if Konoha says he was justified?"

Naruto sneered. "Unacceptable. He has been against us for long enough. We must draw a line. He has blood on his hands. I wouldn't mind taking matters into my own hands and becoming rogue…"

"You're not exhibiting anger as one would expect."

Naruto laughed. "Meaningless exercise. My anger will be expressed when I see him," he then got up.

It was only then Shisui saw Naruto's expression. He flinched. It was a bloody cold mask, his eyes didn't conceal the contempt he held. It was only then that he felt the demonic killing intent from Naruto.

He was just like Itachi when it came to some matters. But Naruto was only controlled in certain spaces. He would become uncontrollable the second he was in a battlefield.

"The Sandaime Hokage will likely shield his former teammate. We can't sit back here. We must do all that we can to ensure the Danzo doesn't get away with murder."

"Even if it means going against the Sandaime?"

Naruto's lips curled up. "Well, if the Sandaime doesn't want, we'll have to make him see reason."

Council Chambers

Madara would certainly laugh at the current situation. And perhaps Tobirama would say he knew things would turn out this way. But Fugaku didn't really think the Nidaime hated them. Maybe he just understood or misunderstood them. The man had studied their behavior and power to certainly know enough. Maybe it was through that understanding that a sense of fear developed.

The village Council would know about the dark secret of his clan. They were rational people. The cold decision would be taken. Fugaku was resigned to it. There was just no way out now.

It was simply just sad and a pity that he never got to see the full potential of his sons. And Maybe, Naruto would have surpassed him and become almost like Madara. His growth wouldn't have been just good for the Uchiha, but for the Leaf as well. At least, the he had laid foundations for the future of the clan.

The Sandaime Hokage cleared his throat as he gathered everyone's thoughts. He had a stern look about him and his voice lacked the usual warmth. It wasn't emotionless as he wanted. The deep thoughts of regret and failure betrayed him at this crucial time.

"You have been called because there is a situation that is urgent. As you all know, we've had issues with the Uchiha. Except some, the rest of you didn't know the full extent of the situation." Hiruzen paused, to allow them to absorb his words. "Last night, Military Police Force arrested one of Root Anbu. He had been impersonating Kagen Uchiha. Danzo was running an operation to spy on the Uchiha. He hasn't admitted to killing Kagen, but he doesn't need to."

"Why would he go through such extreme lengths?" Shibi asked curiously. "Under normal circumstances, such an action would he deemed treason. Military Police has an important role within the village."

There were a couple of nods in agreement with the Aburame clan head.

"I've always thought the situation was deeper than we were being told," Hiashi said with a deep frown. "For Danzo-sama to go to such extreme lengths… it must mean so."

"Some members of the Uchiha clan have started to think a rebellion is the right way to go in order for them to reclaim their place," Hiruzen said in the nicest way possible.

The words were met with silence.

The pregnant tension didn't ease even as Chouza questioned Fugaku.

"Is this true?"

"Yes."

Another round of silence grabbed the room. The tension became so thick, the walls appeared to shift closer, closing in the space around the room. A few sweat drops formed on the foreheads.

"The killing of Kagen Uchiha means the Uchiha now have 'proof' that the village is working against them. And failure to act is further evidence that there is a systematic hatred against the clan." Hiruzen added. "You have all been called to discuss Danzo's action, and the Uchiha's rebellion."

Another minute of silence followed. Then, the chaos erupted. It was mainly from one side. Shibi was silent throughout. His only concern was that they were not informed of this development earlier. Everyone was just talking over the other. Fugaku remained silent.

Voices became crowded as groups formed. One accusation was that if the Uchiha were planning to rebel, the killing of Kagen shouldn't give them any excuse.

"We're not going to get anywhere talking like this!" The Sandaime Hokage said forcefully. "Let us speak one by one. Ask questions and speak your mind."

"Why were we not told of this?"

"It is a matter that preceded your entry into the Council," Hiruzen replied curtly. "I would have preferred not to say anything. But circumstances force me."

"This is treason!" Hiashi exclaimed. "The Uchiha are plotting treason and Fugaku still sits with us here! We have never had a situation like this before. Nobody has ever tried to betray the village in this manner. They are trying to destroy the village!"

Shikaku wouldn't say Hiashi was being hysterical or allowing the competition to get the best of him; the situation was that serious. "You should not generalize the issue, Hiashi-san," the Nara head cautioned.

"Does it matter?"

"It does," Hiruzen replied. "On how we respond to the situation. Not everyone within the Uchiha clan agrees with the idea of rebelling."

"How do you know this?"

"Itachi Uchiha." It was Shibi who replied. "And most likely, Shisui as well. They have been favored, and no one questions their loyalty… Given how close they are, and I think I've heard Itachi is not well loved by the clan as he is by the village," he glanced at the Sandaime. "Was he the one who broke the news?"

"Yes," Hiruzen confirmed. "Itachi told me that some members of the Uchiha clan had become dissatisfied with things. And have been starting to think that the village is trying to get rid of them. The push, as we discussed earlier, was the move to the new clan grounds. When I confronted Fugaku about it, he didn't deny it. We have been working behind the scenes to come to a solution."

"The Uchiha hatred…" Chouza blinked. "Is this even real?" He asked, genuinely curious. It was a staff of legends.

"We don't want to speculate, but there is real animosity between leaders, especially Danzo, and some members of the Uchiha clan."

"We already knew that. But to think of revolting is treasonous, regardless of the circumstances and who you are." Hiashi said. "Did something else happen?"

"Military Police and Root nearly fought after the former went to question Danzo about the murder of Kagen and spying on them. I had to intervene. The hatred runs deep. The Uchiha feel that Danzo has always been conspiring against them. Killing one of them has all but confirmed their suspicions."

"It doesn't help that they would plot to rebel against the Leaf." Hiashi said coldly. "In some sense, you could say Danzo was right about them. Regardless of how they were treated, no one has the right to think of rebelling. The fact that they would consider it and even plot it is revealing about their character!"

"I'm not going to sit and listen to you slander my clan like that, Hiashi-san." Fugaku replied coldly. He could imagine Naruto telling the man that he was all but a visitor to the village the Uchiha founded with the Senju. The boy would even consider it slander that the likes of them had the nerve to sit here and talk about them in such a manner.

"I'm not the one whose clan is plotting to a revolt."

"We're not going to solve things like that," Shikaku cautioned. "As the Sandaime has said, the hatred runs deep. If nothing is done, the Uchiha will take matters into their own hands. Whether justified or not, Danzo did commit, or perhaps, plotted murder of an Uchiha and spied on Military Police without any authorization from the Hokage."

"The end doesn't justify the means?" Chouza asked. "Well, at this case, Itachi was already providing Intel. There was no need to this far."

"I agree," Shikaku said. "Itachi's loyalty has never been questioned, not even by Danzo-sama. We were already working out on solutions. Danzo's actions were not authorized. He acted on his own, usurping the power of the Hokage. I believe, that is something we have to consider. Even if he was justified, acting in such a manner is treasonous. It just shows he has no respect for the authority of the Hokage."

"Indeed." Shibi agreed.

"Is there no way things can be talked out?"

"No."

"That's a shame." Chouza said. "Are members of the Uchiha really going to plan a coupe if they are not stopped?" He asked Fugaku.

"It seems so. At this stage, it is likely they'll do it even without the rest of the clan." Fugaku conceded.

"We need to get the whole picture. I suggest we hear from both Danzo and Itachi. They are knowledgeable about this. Danzo has been spying, he should know something we don't. and maybe he can give us an explanation. We can't dismiss the possibility that the Uchiha may be angry that their plans have been discovered?" Shibi reasoned. "An emergency Council is appropriate in such circumstances."

"Given that Fugaku-san leads the Uchiha, he should only be part of the group when we speak of the facts. Then we decide what must be done." Chouza added.

"Let us make preparations then. I suggest we also call both Naruto and Shisui," Hiruzen suggested.

"I object to Naruto being called." Fugaku was quick to say.

"Why?"

"I want to keep him out of things. Itachi is loyal to the Leaf. He can speak about how things are."

"But Naruto is loyal to the Uchiha. We need to see all sides," Hiruzen said. "I can understand your concerns. But we need all sides, and I think Naruto can complete that. I will not call Shisui." He closed his eyes and then added. "It goes without saying that those in your clan who would think of rebelling must not know we are having such talks, lest they get spooked and act recklessly."

There was no chance of that happening. Naruto would be the death of them. But, Fugaku wasn't going to say.

Uchiha Compound

When Inabi said the Village would look into it, he'd known things would just go about wrong—at least not the way he wanted. Yashiro had been whispering some things into his ear. The man had never been spooked as before. It had honestly filled his heart with new levels of fear, not for themselves but for the whole clan.

The meeting place wasn't as crowded as it usually was. There were just a few capable man, and those he could trust. Shisui had gone to Military Police to keep appearances. They certainly didn't want to withdraw everyone and it would keep the village from suspecting anything.

"I'm really getting nervous," Yashiro said. He looked meek, it was pathetic. But then again, he had a wife and a kid. He had to be nervous for their future.

"We have no choice but to wait for Fugaku-sama."

"What if he sells us out? He has always defended the Sandaime Hokage."

"Don't be ridiculous." Inabi said in a cold tone. "Fugaku-sama is just cautious but he loves the clan. He will not sell us out. But, we have to be clear to him, the clan will not accept anything less of Danzo's head. We want to personally kill him, but we will not reject getting his head."

While he didn't think all would change, Inabi was alive to the reality that his fellow Uchiha could try to stop them. for him, that was the biggest challenge. He was still of the view that if the entire clan pulled its weight, they could pull off a silent coupe and gain control of the village they founded, and yet, have never been able to control because of Tobirama Senju.

"Most of the ideas have been from Danzo. The Sandaime is spineless and simply agrees. If we can't do it with force, then we can remove the whispers from the Sandaime. We can work around how we get into the Sandaime's head after," Someone suggested.

They were not all stupid and arrogant, as some would claim. Inabi liked this. "That could be plan B if we don't get the forces we need. But we are all in agreement that Danzo has to be killed."

"Yes!"

"If we don't get it from the village? What do we do? What if Fugaku-sama can't get the Sandaime to agree to give Danzo to us?"

"We know where he lives. His Root Anbu are nothing. Even regular Anbu are overrated."

"Well, that is something I can agree on."

The whole room fell into deathly silent when Naruto's voice suddenly rang from behind them.

"Just on time," Inabi said in a flat tone. "It also seems being in Anbu has taught you a couple of things," he said of the fact that Naruto had managed to sneak in behind them without anyone noticing.

"Cowardice tactics. But that is just about being a shinobi," Naruto replied with a shrug. He settled down among the rest and then spoke again. "Anbu are hailed as the top ranked shinobi. Itachi becoming Anbu captain was supposed to be a huge thing. But being in Anbu, I have noticed, there is nothing exceptional about it. I'm not a prodigy, but even I could do it. That says a lot about their standards. It has been such a disappointment..."

Inabi really didn't know what Naruto wanted but he wasn't sent here by Shisui or anyone. This means, he had already heard of the situation.

"What do you think?"

"Legally speaking, Root does not exist. We have anger, I don't think I would be satisfied with just about seeing Danzo killed. We exterminate Danzo and his body bags. Root was running an illegal operation against Military Police and killed one of us. Why did Orochimaru flee the village? He was kidnapping children to experiment on them. Who was his friend? Danzo. What happened when we tried to investigate Danzo? The Sandaime shut us out. That was revealing. Orochimaru and Danzo go way back, and schemed together. There was one child who survived the experiments. And he was with Danzo. Until, the Sandaime found about it. So, hatred aside, we have reasons to arrest Danzo…" he waved his right hand in a casual manner. "If they happen to resist arrest and we kill them, well, that happens."

"The Sandaime is not going to accept that!"

"Doesn't matter." Naruto replied. "The question is whether you are all willing to die for the clan. If the clan commands it, I by midnight, I would make sure Danzo and his tools are exterminated. Then give up myself to be killed by the village. But if you do this, you will be branded as traitors and will lose your lives... The question is, are you ready to say good bye to your families. If you are all ready to be killed, and I'm happy to lend you my strength... Fugaku-sama can always say we became rogue and acted on our own. My loyalties to Konoha are questionable anyway. And their favourite child in Itachi will confirm, and the Uchiha clan will be safe."

Danzo's statement

Danzo thought it almost humiliating that he had to stand and give evidence to people he once ruled over . He swallowed the anger and bitterness. If it wasn't for Hiruzen's inability to act as Hokage, he wouldn't be standing here. Anbu would have been in the sidelines, working on backing Itachi to get rid of his entire clan while he lurked in the shadows to take Shisui's eyes. It was dangerous to leave those in the control of a boy. An Uchiha no less.

The good thing was that Koharu and Homura were present. They would back whatever he was saying and aside from Shikaku, the others could still tag in line. If he'd taken Shisui's eyes, he wouldn't need to be in such theatrics.

"You have been summoned to explain why you had Kagen Uchiha killed and decided to spy on the Uchiha as well as your thoughts on the coupe attempt." Hiruzen said without emotion, his eyes directly at Danzo. "It is for the benefit of others, so, do your best."

"Is there a need to explain anything?"

"Yes." Hiashi said. "Why did you have the Uchiha killed."

"To gain access to Military Police. The Uchiha can't be trusted. I knew it. But I did what I did as head if Root once I'd heard whispers."

"So, you did what you did to understand what was happening within Military Police?"

"I'm sure you've heard of everything already. But now is not the time for such questions!" Danzo shouted. "We must take decisive action against the Uchiha! They are trying to destroy Konoha. If we don't do anything, they'll bring this village to its knees!"

"Danzo-sama," Chouza started in a quiet tone. "Is it true you were the ones who decided the Uchiha shouldn't fight the Kyubi?"

"What does that have to do with anything?!"

"I have to agree with Danzo," Koharu said sharply. "We can't focus on the past. We must deal with the present situation with haste. They could be plotting while we sit here and debate about history!"

"I think it is important," Shikaku said firmly. "We must know the root of the problem."

Hiruzen nodded. "So, answer the question, Danzo."

"I gave the order because there was suspicion. We needed to act with caution. And I did what was best for the Leaf!"

"What was that suspicion based on?" Shikaku asked nicely. "As far as I'm concerned, at that time, the Uchiha had served Konoha faithfully. There might have been grumbles over Minato being selected, but that was that. Fugaku had always been faithful and diligent."

Danzo glared at Shikaku.

"Are you trying to suggest I drove the Uchiha into this?" He questioned with narrowed eyes.

"Ridiculous!" Koharu exclaimed. "We can't try to play the blame game. Nobody told the Uchiha to rebel. If they had issues with us, they could have spoken to us. Fugaku has always done what he was told without much complaints. That they would plot a coupe just proves they are power hungry and Hiruzen was right to select Minato over Fugaku!"

Nobody could disagree with that statement, at least to the extent that it excluded Fugaku. There was no one who could logically say Fugaku was a power hungry man.

"Be that as it may, if you had nothing to base your suspicions on, then, the Uchiha might not have been wrong to suspect the village is against them."

"You speak as if I acted alone. They are not rebelling against me but the village!" He pointed at Hiruzen. "We made decisions together and he supported everything. We did what was best for Konoha. Just because he is—"

"Danzo." Hiruzen only needed to say that with narrowed eyes to shut the war hawk.

"Decisions that were taken before, were of the Council. My reasons are irrelevant!" Danzo said sternly. "What is before us is that the Uchiha are planning a coupe. They want to take over Konoha by force. The moment that happens, Iwagakure will launch an invasion. Minato is no longer around to save the village!"

He shot Hiruzen a glare, showing he blamed him for everything. After all, if not for the Sandaime, Konoha could have destroyed Iwagakure. And such a threat would not exist right now.

"The revolt could indeed bring the village to its knees. We have to choose between Konoha and the Uchiha. And the option is clear," Koharu said.

"Unfortunate, but if there is no room for dialogue, then things have to be in that order. It is just a pity though, we see things could have been handled differently and we wouldn't be in this situation." Chouza said with a shake of his head.

"What do you think must be done?" Shikaku asked Danzo.

"The entire clan must be wiped out. We cannot allow any one of them to leave Konoha. They'll become a threat to us!"

"But not all Uchiha want to rebel." Shibi pointed out. "I'm not comfortable with giving an order to kill even children who don't know anything. That would be unjust, considering, the village is partly responsible for this mess," he said.

"Don't be naïve. If the children are allowed to live, they'll grow hating us for ordering their parents to be killed! We will have the same problem as we do now!"

"Danzo is right." Homaru said in agreement. "We can't take chances. Konoha has to be saved, no matter what."

"Itachi can be given that power to handle the Uchiha given their power."

"But Itachi is not the strongest." Shibi pointed out. "Fugaku remains the most powerful. I would dare say, there is nobody stronger than him present in the village, the Sandaime Hokage excluded. Itachi isnt even the strongest Uchiha. Besides, we've been told Itachi is loyal. He is also a child. He cannot be given the duty to clean up messes of us adults."

"Itachi isn't a child!"

"You've said enough, Danzo." Hiruzen said and then waved his right hand. "Leave the room."

Hearing from Itachi

Shikaku long realized that there was no way out of this without removing members of the Uchiha who wanted to rebel. But this would largely depend on Fugaku's cooperation. As storied as Itachi was, he was still no match for his father. Shisui also wielded the Mangekyo Sharingan. Their cooperation was required. Hearing from Itachi now just required gauging his appetite for battle.

The Nara head sighed sadly as the young Uchiha came up. They expected children to solve matters that could have been avoided. Had the Sandaime taken decisive steps instead of allowing Danzo to rule, they wouldn't be on this situation.

The young Uchiha knelt before the Council.

"What is the situation in the Clan?"

Itachi glanced up and replied. "Tense. Inabi has already gathered those who support him and they are talking about taking action if Danzo-sama isn't given to them. There is a feeling that he might not. Nobody really trusts the Sandaime Hokage, as they believe the injustice and oppression has continued even under his reign."

Decisive actions had to be taken, lest Konoha became overshadowed by darkness. What Itachi wanted to avoid more than anything was war. And Inabi was vying for blood. He wouldn't listen to reason at this point.

"Would you say they'll take action?"

"Yes." Itachi replied without doubt. "They've so far not done anything because my father has stopped it. And Naruto had threatened everyone but I don't think he'd do anything to stop them going after Danzo. After all, an Uchiha was murdered."

What Naruto would do wasn't entirely predictable. But it was possible for him to see it was as a fair game. That his fellow Uchiha felt contempt for Danzo was with no question. He was just the type to hide it well, out of considerations. He too had his limits. Itachi just didn't know the extent of those limits.

Chouza felt sad. There was nothing that could be done to salvage the situation. He'd hoped, even as Danzo spoke. Homura and Koharu seemed to have made up their minds already. They held no interest in listening to anything and just wanted the Uchiha to be permanently neutralized.

He agreed with Shibi; innocent children couldn't be murdered. He didn't think even the Sandaime could stomach it. As harsh as Hiashi was, he too wasn't that heartless.

"What is the force of those who would try to rebel?"

"I alone would enough to handle them." Itachi replied.

"Who does that include?"

"It is members of Military Police but not all of them. Naruto and Shisui are not included," Itachi replied.

Itachi still feared that Inabi would take Naruto's warning seriously. If he was given time, he wasn't going to act without forcing the entire clan to join him. He would know, if they tried, they would be stopped. The sure way to get what he wanted was to ensure Naruto joined them.

"Would you take the order to get rid of them?" Koharu asked.

"Yes."

"Even if they don't do anything?"

"It is only a matter of time. If something isn't done soon, their feelings will spread through to the entire clan." Itachi closed his eyes for a second. If Naruto was influenced, his father would follow as well. While he may not even realize it, Itachi thought Naruto had some influence over his father. If Naruto decided Danzo had to be killed, his father would give the order. "If it comes to it, even I wouldn't be able to put out the fires. Konoha will be in grave danger."

He was alive to the power the others held, but especially Naruto. If they had to battle to the death, there was no telling how it would go.

"That leaves little to be discussed," Koharu said in sharp tone. "I get the impression that you're trying to save some members of the clan, but we cannot be taking chances."

"We all agree Itachi is loyal," Shikaku said before anyone could absorb Koharu's words. "Why don't we hear from him what happens when those who are planning to rebel are removed?" He was really trying hard not to say killed.

"Those who do not agree with the rebellion are few. We're only a handful," Itachi conceded. "Outside of Shisui and Naruto, there are not more than seven who disagree. There might be bitterness, but they'll understand." Naruto had himself threatened to kill those who invite risk to the Uchiha clan.

"We're not even sure of Naruto's loyalties." Koharu pointed out.

"Naruto loves Konoha."

"But no more than his clan."

"That is true." Itachi was forced to concede.

"Then, if others are to be removed, he too must be removed." Homura said, with Koharu agreeing with him. But the others didn't agree with this suggestion.

Itachi was dismissed while they discussed his words.

"It is clear we have one solution. Rivalry aside, we cannot have those who are against a rebellion killed too." Hiashi said in a hardened tone. His words were directed at the two elders. "If the others are like Itachi, then we won't have a problem. Konoha cannot remain as it is without the power of the Uchiha."

"Itachi and Shisui would be sufficient to revive the clan."

"We're talking about now." Shibi said. "I agree with Hiashi-san. If there is no other choice, those who want to rebel must he dealt with. But we cannot do it in the open as it will just alienate the Uchiha further."

"You're all being naïve." Koharu said harshly. "I hope you do not come to regret it."

"It is your attitude that has led to such situations. I can understand why the Sandaime made decisions he made if you people were his Council," Chouza said with a shake of his head. "Do we still hear from Naruto?"

"Yes. We must get a clear picture about him. But we cannot tell him what we have decided."

Naruto's Statement

Glaring eyes, some just curious and some just expressionless. It was funny. Madara perhaps wouldn't have stood for this nonsense. To be questioned on the village you founded was ridiculous. Yet, spoke brutal levels over how their power has diminished.

And how far the mighty had fallen. This was beneath them.

The Uchiha were once great, but now, even the Akimichi could judge then. It was just laughable. As he knelt before the Council, Naruto swore, the Uchiha wouldn't be brought to this state once again. Nobody feared them anymore. He would rise above all things and reclaim the crown and glory of the Uchiha. No more would he have to kneel before anyone.

He was born into this world for this.

Fugaku had warned him on his way here, to be careful of what he says. But did it matter? These people have already judged him. Some of them even looked uncomfortable staring at his Sharingan. They have already judged the Uchiha—and nothing he would say could change the outcome. Perhaps the only person who left this room happy and relieved was Itachi.

"Staring at us with your eyes is very disrespectful." Koharu stared harshly. "Are you trying to intimidate us?"

"My Sharingan is almost exclusively activated, Koharu-san." Naruto replied in a sharp tone, yet keeping all the formalities. "If people were to be intimidated by this, then, they are weak and shouldn't question me."

The Sandaime cleared his throat before Koharu could erupt. He was right in bringing this boy here. He was going to blunt, and not really make things easy. But that was what was needed for them to come to a correct decision.

"You have been called because of the situation that has arose. We know the Uchiha clan or some members, are planning to rebel. It has come to our attention that if they don't get Danzo, it will be a trigger."

Naruto didn't reply.

"We would not even give Danzo to the Uchiha even if he was wrong. We won't be doing anything to placate anybody's ego. Nobody is bigger than the village!" Homura said with conviction.

"I see." That was all Naruto really wanted to say but he spoke again because the fragile old man was looking down on him. "That is interesting. You said even if Danzo-san was wrong, you'd not give him up. Is that to say, you don't think he was wrong?"

"His decision was justified, therefore, not wrong."

Everyone else seemed to be intent on watching him. Perhaps they wanted to see how he behaved before bombarding him with questions.

"If that is the decision of the Council, then so shall it be." Naruto said. "Though, for people who say nobody is bigger than the village, Danzo-san does appear to be bigger. I mean, he acts outside of his authority, with no rebuke. I dare say he was working with Orochimaru to kidnap children for experiments. But only his partner got to flee while he remained. He—"

"That's a scandalous accusation!" Koharu shouted. "You're too young to understand anything. Danzo has always given his all for the village. You were born yesterday to be able to question him."

"Perhaps, but, and I say so respectfully, the Sandaime Hokage, and Danzo-san, wouldn't be here if not for Kagami Uchiha who saved them many times. Hell, even you wouldn't sit in your comfort seat and criticize me if not for the Uchiha. From where I stand, I do have a right to question Danzo-san."

"Naruto-san," Shibi intervened before anything more could be said. "Are you aware some of your clan members plan to rebel? We have been told you don't disagree with the plans to rebel and have been trying to stop it."

"Itachi spoke the truth."

"Why don't you agree with it?"

"It is an act conceived because of fear and self-preservation. Add arrogance to it, and it disregards everything else… that is one reason… secondly," he took a pause and then smiled. "When ambition is bigger than ability, and you can't see it; you're a fool. And I can't be led by fools."

He was not really directing this to his fellow Uchiha but some members of the Council. They were welcome to think otherwise. It was after all true that Inabi was a fool for thinking if he was able to take over Konoha, other Great Nations would invade it before he even gets to celebrate his success.

"So, the thought to rebel has nothing to do with being power hungry?"

"No."

"Hard to believe."

"We're all entitled to believe what we want."

"You must be careful of how you speak!"

"Of course."

"If they were not fools, would you agree? If it was from Fugaku?"

"Fugaku-sama wouldn't have come to such a decision. But if he did, he would have thought long about it, not based on his emotions, but the hard reality. He would have then concluded, it was the logical step, and it was possible. Then, I would have been obliged to follow him."

"Aren't you supposed to follow him because he is your clan head?"

"Did you question Itachi about that? Isn't he supposed to follow his own father? He is the heir of the Uchiha, and yet spies on it." Naruto chuckled.

"Itachi is a real shinobi. He values the village above all things."

"Real shinobi it seems those who abandon and betray their families. It is no wonder Sakumo killed himself." Naruto replied with a shake of his head. "I admit, my fellow clansman were wrong to think about rebelling. But I still love them. I love Konoha too. My grandparents loved this peace and security that even when the man who founded this village told us to leave, because he feared, eventually, the Nidaime' students who try to wipe us out, they refused. Perhaps we should have listened. Because, really, some of the decisions taken against us have been a conspiracy. I do have a question," Naruto said, his eyes moving around the room. "You have probably decided we are arrogant, powerful hungry and can't be reasoned with, and pose a danger to Konoha. As such, a process of elimination must be carried out…" he stopped at the Sandaime.

"What makes you think we have come to that decision?" Hiashi questioned.

He was worried and so were the others. Naruto wasn't saying this for the first time. He'd already said they'd made a decision. What was concerned was that he held no fears and wasn't really watching his words. He was no fool either.

Hiashi understood why Fugaku had not wanted this child to be brought here.

"A wild guess," Naruto said with indifference. "Tsunade, maybe a Sannin, but she is not in Konoha. She abandoned it, and has refused to return for many years. Yet, she was chosen as a successor. Fugaku-sama has served. No one questions his loyalty. He is powerful. Worse, some members of his clan want to rebel, but he has stood fast and so far stopped it from happening. But if he wanted, he could have slaughtered everyone in this room long ago, and only the Sandaime would have stood out, but he has not. He has never demanded to be made Hokage. He ha followed orders. The Sandaime has known this. But yet, he chose a traitor for a successor over him. Are we mad to be insulted over this?"

The answer did not come. "You have spoken your views. Anyone with a last question?" the Sandaime asked. No one had anything, And Naruto was dismissed.

"What a frightening child," Chouza said.

"Indeed." Shikaku said. He felt this became a whole lot more bothersome and troubling. He understood why Fugaku wanted to keep Naruto away. "He admitted straight to our faces that the only reason he disagrees with the revolt is because of the consequences. But if conditions were right, he wouldn't refuse."

"The refusal is not based on loyalties or some moral compass, but rather, the fact that the outcome would be undesirable." Hiruzen smiled despite the situation.

Naruto was really different from Itachi. Despite what he was saying, he still followed orders. White and Three never complained about him being disobedient. Then again, he only said he refuses to be led by fools.

"My decision is that only those who will be identified to be sympathetic and active in planning to rebel, must be dealt with. I don't necessary mean death. They could be put in their own prison for charges of prison."

"They have to be killed." Koharu was quick to say.

Hiashi agreed. "We cannot have them living around. They might inspire others." He said. "The question is how we go about this. And who carries it out? We want to be silent. But we obviously can't hide it. There has to be some explanation."

"Let Fugaku decide." Shikaku said. "It is his clan. We just have to let him know, if he doesn't, the village will take action."

"He will be summoned," Hiruzen said. "There is something I must confirm. I have grappled with this for a long time now. But if Uchiha blood will be shed, it is only fair, some things are set right.

"There is suspicion that Danzo was indeed involved with Orochimaru. I stopped the investigation. But his greatest crime is treason," Hiruzen said with his eyes closed. At the moment, Kakashi appeared in the chamber. "Tell them, Kakashi."

"Hai." The Jonin spoke in a somber tone. "After Minato sensei died, I was in a bad place. He was like a father to me. Danzo-sama recruited me to Root. He started telling me that Minato sensei died because of the Sandaime and that he was no longer fit to become Hokage. He wanted to become Hokage. He told me that the Sandaime trusted me and gave me a mission to kill the Sandaime. I told the Sandaime everything and he confronted Danzo."

Hiruzen shut up Koharu and Homura before they could defend Danzo. "Danzo does love Konoha. But he is obsessive about it. He thinks he should be Hokage tried to have me killed in order to get his position. I let it go because I thought he was useful. I'm ultimately responsible for alienating the Uchiha as I am Hokage. But if a decision is to be made to shed blood, Danzo too must face consequences of his actions."
