Road to Valhalla

My name is Seraph. In a world that is filled with magic, science and arts of unbelievable kinds, I'm relatively ordinary. But then I met them. A group of assassins that work the machines of the world behind closed curtains. And the most striking is their leader, the woman which is the greatest mystery in the world. Though to the world we are all dead, each of us has a story of their own. I wonder if I can find myself a home among these people who call themselves Valkyries and more importantly can I solve all the riddles that surround them?

The Two Faces of Lubbock

"Hey, what were you two talking about?"

When I looked up, Lubbock's head was popping in from the door.

"Nothing", I was caught by surprise and didn't know how to answer.

"Really?", he glared at me, wide-eyed.

"What else could it be? But why are you asking Lubbock?"

For a moment, silence persisted as he scrutinized me, without coming inside or opening the door any further. It was just his head, staring at me in dead silence.

"Why are you putting up an offensive?", he asked bluntly.

"Huh?"

"Seraph, you idiot", his face lightened up all too suddenly and he swung the door open, walking in, "I was just messing with you. What are you getting so worked up about?"

"What a stupid idea of joking around you have!"

"Just can it and get up. We're heading out again", it seemed to me we barely stayed at home anymore. Serena just wanted us to loaf around all day and Lubbock, in particular, was all for it.

"Again?!", I sighed, "Alright, I'll be right there."

"Hurry up now, what a waste you are Seraph! And to think your room is better looking than mine. Those two dumb kids must have been too stupid to see your stupid. That's right, I know. I'll bunk in here tonight! You have enough room anyway and I wouldn't get any sleep knowing you are asleep in better conditions. You better make space for me and don't think anything's going to stop me", I think Lubbock went on a little longer about this and that, but I had slipped into a thought and wasn't really listening.

Eventually, when he did come around to leaving, something urged me to call after him.

"Lubbock", before I knew what I was doing, Lubbock was waiting for me to say something.

"What?"

"Isn't there...is there something you want to tell me?"

"Huuuh?!"

"Uh...don't mind then", I decided I'd rather just shut up about it.

"Hey, Seraph", a threatening glimmer shone in his eyes as he stared right at me, "What did she tell you?"

I almost forgot to breathe. The look he wore was nothing short of sinister. It sent shivers down my spine. Needless to say, I wasn't scared for myself. I was thinking about the collateral damage someone with that look could cause. Seeing that he wasn't going to get any answer from me as I was, Lubbock soon turned around and left silently. I sat frozen for quite a while.

Bunking in here tonight, I thought, there could be nothing worse than that right now.

Just a teeny tiny chapter today.
