Return of the Unknown Swordsman

Please note that this novel is fictional, and as such, the characters and organizations within are merely the subject of the author's intellectual devices. The year is 1009 A.D. Huanzhi Ren is the Unknown Swordsman, an assassin with over 37 years of experience in murdering adversaries. He has been the death of countless young warriors, 1200 to be exact. Among those who have fallen to his blade is even the former king, Qinluo. This man is considered by many to be a villain. His closest companion, you ask? A man named Suntao. His blood brother since abandonment. Huanzhi, also called Zhi or Zhi-zhi, has the aspirations to be the greatest warrior the martial arts world has ever known. By the way, screw all of these titles, I'm not gonna lie... that's pretty long to remember. "The Greatest Warrior the Martial Arts World Has Ever Known." Think that fits on a name tag? Hell no. In any case, Huanzhi is told of a pill by his blood brother that is rumored to give the absorber of it the amount of qi cultivation of 89 years of isolation training. The only problem? It's guarded by some of the greatest warriors to walk the realm... and Zhi-zhi can't fight with his right arm. Just before dying from his wounds from a fight with Lu Gongfen "The Falling Lotus Petal" (Seriously man, who names these stupid titles), Zhi regrets all the vile acts he has committed. As such, he is given a second chance at life. A chance to redeem himself. The only problem? It's 2023, and he doesn't have a blood brother around to keep him in check. Please read the prologue for the background! Thank you for taking the time to read this pathetic little excuse of what I consider a novel... AND FOR GOD'S SAKE SOMEONE LEAVE A REVIEW! The Waiting Game? Yeah Right.

Huanzhi sat down with Meiying and the two spoke. "Meiying, do you have any idea where Lu Gongfen is at the current moment?" Huanzhi began. His eyes flared like fire upon the mention of the name of his worst enemy and he searched the eyes of his beloved for an answer before she even spoke. Confusion was the only thing he saw in them. He knew before she even spoke that she didn't have any idea where the bastard was.

"Huanzhi. I shouldn't even be here in the first place. I only came because I didn't expect you to awaken so suddenly. I have no idea where Lu Gongfen could be." She said fearfully. Lu Gongfen was a murderer now. One of the worst criminals in the province and the absolute worst in the city. "Why must you go after him immediately? He is much stronger than you at this point in time."

"I am not going to defeat him just yet. I just want to observe him. Have you not heard of assassins scouting their targets for weeks or months in advance until finally striking?"

"Huanzhi. I'm a poisoner, not a goddamned assassin like you."

"Tomayto, tomahto." He groaned as he spoke. This was one of the reasons why he used to get a little annoyed with Meiying's false sense of pride in being a poisoner instead of an assassin like he was. "Regardless. You said you don't know where he is?"

"Right."

"How come? I thought his executives all knew where he was at all times." Huanzhi muttered as he looked Meiying in the eyes.

Meiying scoffed and giggled a little bit when he heard the past statement. "Right Huanzhi, complete and utter strangers know where Lu Gongfen is all the time. Yeah, we all have surveillance cameras following him around twenty-four seven."

Huanzhi pouted for a moment as Meiying spoke condescendingly. "Then who do you believe would know where Lu Gongfen is at the time?" Meiying looked at Huanzhi for a moment and pondered. She placed one of her slender, delicate fingers to her cheek and squinted her eyes as she tried to figure out a way to help Huanzhi out. She suddenly snapped her fingers and spoke enthusiastically.

"Right! I know. There is one executive that is considered to be Lu Gongfen's right hand man. His name is Hukong. He is usually close to Lu Gongfen, and I heard that they even reside in the same apartment."

Huanzhi's face went pale at the mention of the name. His face darkened as a shadow cast over half of it and he kept his eyes wide. His facial muscles twitched slightly as he spoke. "Hukong... is back?"

"You know that man?" Meiying asked.

"He is my worst tormentor. I thought I would be rid of him when I killed him those many centuries and decades ago. He still stands before me. He still defies me. He still poisons my mind with his subtle illusions and mirages. Damnable shit." Huanzhi's face had become so menacingly distorted that even Meiying, who loved Huanzhi more than anyone else in the world, was fearful of his wrath.

"Is everything alright, Yijin? Who is this girl?" Juanbei appeared from the open door with a plastic bag of groceries.

Huanzhi snapped out of the trance he was in. When he looked up, Meiying was gone. "Damn. So much for that." Huanzhi turned around and gazed at Juanbei. "Everything's fine, Juanbei. In my past life, she was my lady. I tried my best to treat her like a Goddess and I failed. She is an executive of the Kanling Gang as well."

"What?! How could you let yourself talk to a Kanling Gang executive so calmly? And the way you stated it. Ugh, dumbass kid."

"You forget that you are talking to your grandfather, Juanbei."

"I don't give a rat's ass. You deserve to be my grandfather as much as I deserve to be an idol singer. See I made you laugh right there, that's how implausible this whole deal is."

"Implausible or not, it is still currently occurring. In other words, 'deal with it, Jackass."

Juanbei quickly to a seat on his office chair and Huanzhi stuck his ramen in the microwave. They quickly were made and Huanzhi sat down with Juanbei to eat.

"So, is there any new information that you received from this girl?" Juanbei asked.

Huanzhi proceeded to tell the whole story. When this was completed Juanbei looked at Huanzhi for a moment and sighed. "So you're going to look for this Hukong asshole?"

"Soon, yes. Let me finish my ramen first."

Juanbei looked at Huanzhi for a moment barely keeping a straight face as Huanzhi could not grasp the concept of plastic chopsticks. It was so much less efficient than the wooden ones from his time. Huanzhi sighed. The noodles continually fell into the plate as he tried unsuccessfully to twirl them on the soft, plastic sticks.

Juanbei burst out laughing. "Alright, I can't take it anymore. I wanted to see your reaction to those fake chopsticks!" He smacked his thigh a couple of times as he wheezed and held out the true wooden chopsticks. Huanzhi looked at Juanbei with daggers for eyes and shouted. "You little prick!"

A few minutes later, the food was finished being eaten and Juanbei had a bump on his head from a light chop by Huanzhi. He sat still and rocked himself forward and back as though he were in hysteria. "So scary." He muttered to himself.

Huanzhi placed the plate in the sink. "And just for that, you're cleaning up." The ancient warrior left and began to light-step through the air. He leaped and bounded across the town and headed for the one place that he knew he could find Hukong. The largest bar in town. Meiying had shown Huanzhi a photo of Hukong's reincarnated vessel and now Huanzhi had something to go off of.

He stopped just behind the bar and began a nonchalant walk. He placed a hand on the door and pulled it towards him. All of the seriousness of the moment melted away when he realized it was a push door. Oh come on now, don't laugh. We've all done it.

Huanzhi covered his face as he entered and walked through to one of the bodyguards present. He stepped up to the man who was almost twice his size and spoke. "Are you with Hukong?"

"Who the f***'s asking."

Huanzhi pulled up his sleeve and revealed a Kanling Executive tattoo. The bodyguard yelped and bowed to Huanzhi. "I'm very sorry, boss. I didn't know who you were until now."

"Don't let it happen again, and I won't be forced to punish you."

"Yes, boss."

Huanzhi stepped through. That fake tattoo drawn by Meiying with an ink pen proved effective. He pushed open the door to a small back room and immediately loud, roaring laughter could be heard. Clinking of glasses and a champagne bottle popping open.

"Come on, ladies. Let's all have a nice drink and enjoy ourselves. Let loose!" Hukong's voice cheered along with two other male voices and three female voices. Huanzhi treaded softly and pulled open a curtain slightly to look inside. He saw Hukong sitting at the head of a long table while two other men sat to his right and left. One woman sat next to each man.

"Alright then!"

Suddenly, the women all slowly passed out. They dropped to the ground softly as the men cheered and laughed.

"Here's to liquid anaesthesia!"

"Hear, hear!" yelled the other two as they drank their own separate drinks. One of the men was quick to attempt to undress one of the women present. The group carried the women to a sofa and placed them there.

"Hukong, you've slipped to new lows." Huanzhi's voice cut in.

"Who is that?" Hukong asked as he turned around, undoing his belt.

"You do not remember me. I am but a vision of your past. I am here to haunt you."

"Ah yes! Huanzhi. Welcome to my 'Flower Garden." Hukong laughed obnoxiously at the disgusting name he had given to this room. "You don't remember how much fun you and I had when I brought you to the original Flower Garden in the Feizhou Pavilion?"

"You speak for yourself, you degenerate!" Huanzhi yelled.

"No, no. I remember clearly that you really 'enjoyed' yourself while watching me. Too bad I had to kill her afterwards to ensure your silence."

"Shut your mouth, you abomination among men! Meiying was my dearly beloved and you murdered her! You bastard! You stole her innocence and then killed her before my eyes!"

"Is it not true, then, that I am about to do the same thing now?"

"What are you talking about, Hukong?" Huanzhi asked in fury.

"Junxia is Meiying. I know this for a fact. I'll kill her in front of your eyes again just so that you feel the pain. The pain that I felt when you murdered my beloved as well."

"Hukong! I told you to leave her out of this!"

"But I cannot, you piece of shit! You murdered Qianming!"

"Because they hired me to do it!"

"You should have killed them when you heard that they wanted you to come after my girl!"

Hukong couldn't hold himself back any longer. He dashed forward at a blindingly fast speed and slammed a knife at Huanzhi's chest. Huanzhi blocked with crossed arms and kicked Hukong back. Huanzhi grabbed a beer bottle from next to him and smashed it on the table. The jagged edges glistened with the alcoholic beverage as a puddle formed around Huanzhi. Huanzhi lunged forward and bursted himself towards the other two men present, stabbing them quickly and cleanly through the throat.

"And then, there was one." Huanzhi said menacingly.

"I'll kill you, Huanzhi. My time is not yet done." Hukong growled as the two met each other in the center of the room again. Huanzhi perfectly placed the broken bottle and caught Hukong's knife in the throat of the bottle. It lodged itself there and could not be pulled out. Huanzhi dropped his weapon and kicked Hukong's leg. The fortitude of Hukong was renowned across all the provinces. His body was like steel.

The kick ricocheted off of Hukong's leg and slammed itself into Hukong's ribs. The man made no attempt at blocking. He only grinned and watched as Huanzhi retreated. Hukong dashed forward once again as Huanzhi used Hukong's body weight to slam him into the long table. It cracked and bits flew everywhere. "Damn bastard!" Shouted Hukong as he rose from the table unscathed. He grabbed a plate and flung it at Huanzhi, but the ancient assassin dodged and attempted a leg sweep. The attack did not succeed as Hukong leaped upwards and slammed his feet down with force on Huanzhi's shin.

Huanzhi shouted as the bone within him creaked under the weight, but it held strong. Huanzhi was always a fortitudinous warrior as well. He pushed back upwards and sent Hukong into the air once more. Huanzhi then pushed himself off of the ground and slammed a spinning kick into the man's chest, sending him flying into the wall. A priceless painting fell to the ground from its frame in ruins as Hukong acrobatically rose from the ground. He panted slightly and pulled a fragment of wood from his shoulder.

Blood poured slowly from the wound as he stood straight and growled at Huanzhi. "So you've almost reached the pinnacle of greatness. Too bad. Lu Gongfen already has!" Hukong dashed forward and fired a flurry of fists at Huanzhi. Huanzhi continually dodged and blocked all of them as Hukong grinned with veins bulging from his head. "Hey Huanzhi, I think I'll violate Meiying again this time around too. She's been reincarnated into such an alluring body. I'm sure she'll be as exciting as she was before."

"I'll kill you! Have you no remorse?!"

"I could ask you the same question, Huanzhi!"

Huanzhi struck his palm into Hukong's abdominal region and sent him skidding backwards towards a tempered glass window. The entire room was in shambles and Hukong spoke suddenly. He looked around and shouted in fury as he saw the entire place ruined.

"Once again, you've destroyed my Flower Garden. Just like you did in the past. I swear, I'll kill you for this, Huanzhi. For now, I must bid you adieu. There is more important things at stake now."

Hukong dashed to a window and leapt through it. The glass shattered as he landed outside and Huanzhi watched him light-step away. Huanzhi suddenly gasped and leapt out the window after Hukong.

"More important business? That must mean!..."
