Dead?

I refused to believe the sight in front of me. The boy in the crib was not my son, and I refused to believe that the child I had held not less than an hour ago was dead. Something was definitely wrong somewhere, and I was not about to accept this!

A numbness spread through me, creeping into my limbs as I forced myself to move forward, my heart pounding violently in my chest. I reached the crib, my hands trembling as I stared down at the boy. He looked so peaceful, so still, but something was wrong. Something wasn't right. I leaned closer, my mind racing, trying to make sense of it all.

How could this have happened? I had been with him, had felt his small, fragile body in my arms, his heartbeat strong against my chest. There had been no sign, no warning. He had been healthy, perfect. And now...he was gone?

"No," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "This isn't real, that's not my baby!"
