A New Job

"Notice. Would you like me to turn off quests alerts? You can still view them if you request for them again."

You can do that?! Why didn't you do that earlier?!

"Notice. You did not ask to do so. Thus, I did not turn off the alerts."

I swear this thing is giving me attitude. Either that or it is the first time this thing is to guide someone rational. After that internal monologue, I focused on the current conversation with Mavislin. She was still sipping on more soup.

"Though, I will give missions to everyone in my Ark at the start of each month. It'll be at the back of the Old Chapel, like a big board for all to see. Find the ones under 'The Pillars' for the right missions. Come to me if the missions run out or you can't find something that interests you."

"There are specific ones?"

"Affirmative. I can't be letting you on a Blizzard Faction's mission, and you'll drown before you know it. And everyday work involves patrolling, but once I call upon the Ark to be activated, you should head into the mission with an intent to kill. We are the Attacking Ace of the Arks."

"But I'll have you know, and if you go on more missions than what's agreed upon, you can earn higher the rest. Or if you go on a certain mission that is deemed dangerous by our standard, like fighting against Catastrophe leveled enemies, I'll reward you with something significant."

"Either more pay or a specific thing you want, I'm not too stingy on that. But, usually, each Major mission you go on, the folks there will pass you a gift if you've bonded with them enough."

Ah... So I can get overtime pay? So long as I'm not working to the bone, I should be alright. Besides, missions like patrolling won't take too much time. They probably last a day, and I'm done. But what is the deal with Catastrophe leveled enemies? I didn't know enemies have ranked over here.

"Notice. There are three main levels of enemies of the Mages in this realm. The first is the Hostile Level, the ones that were the woodland creatures. The second would be Chaos Level, which you've not encountered. And the last would be the Catastrophe Level, which you've not seen as well."

"However, the power of a Catastrophe leveled enemy would be the same power as Mavislin."

Well, I'm never fighting that kind of enemy then. Even at my best, I highly doubt that I can beat Mavislin. She sounds pretty powerful. I'm worried about rejecting her if I don't like the following conditions. So far, it sounds pretty good.

Oh yea, is there a quota other than going on missions?

"Sorry to cut in but is there a quota to hit? Like, with each mission, unethical events must be reported? For instance, are there several enemies I need to kill to earn my keep? Or incidents to report?" I questioned.

Mavislin blinked in confusion before sighing loudly.

"Please do not confuse the Mafia's way of work with us. First off, we do not want to harm anyone unless we have to. The Barren Pillars are the only ones allowed to attack if the enemy is hostile on sight. The rest of the Arks are forbidden to do so."

"They can only defend, and the Vigilante can only retreat if things get escalated. If there isn't anything suspicious to report after a normal patrol, I'm not going to pay you any lesser. I'd rather have peaceful nights than ruckus ones. Unless we are at war."

"And if you managed to resolve problems during a patrol without killing anyone for more than a few months, I will give you a new weapon to choose from. Or armor if you need that more. Please keep in mind that the Arks aren't warmongers. We don't go around starting fights like mad people."

Uhh... I must've hit a nerve when asking that question. I nodded in understanding and apologized.

"It is alright. Let's continue, about your mealtime. You can choose to have meals with us, in the Old Chapel. Or, you can grab ingredients from Headquarters and bring them back to cook for yourself. When you are on missions, I will provide food during the mission if I'm around."

"If not, I will give you extra for the food."

"Then if I need to stay overnight for a mission?"

"No matter which Domain you are in, the King within that Domain will provide with accommodations. So that leaves you with your pay. Unless you've got other questions?" asked Mavislin.

She is good. This Mage was hitting the correct answers before I could even open my mouth. I shook my head as I had no further queries.
