Reigning over the Heavens

Joren's childhood was a cruel landscape, shaped by pain, suffering, and humiliation at every turn. Bullied relentlessly at school, he became an outcast, the target of both physical and emotional torment. At home, he was invisible, unloved, and neglected by a family that seemed to see him as nothing more than a burden. His parents, wrapped in their own indifference, ignored his cries for help, leaving him to fend for himself in a world that seemed determined to crush him. Every day, Joren endured a life that felt like an endless nightmare—a nightmare that was only made worse by the fleeting moments of hope he’d occasionally catch, only for them to be dashed by fate’s cruel hand. Just when Joren thought he might find a way out, a glimmer of salvation appeared—a chance to escape, a way to break free from the pain. But fate, ever indifferent, saw fit to deal him a final, devastating blow. He died—his life snuffed out before he could escape the nightmare. Or so he thought. Reincarnated in a new world, Joren’s torment did not end with his death. In an unimaginable twist, the Gods made a grave mistake: they allowed his memories to remain intact. All the suffering, all the heartache, and all the pain of his former life flooded back with him into this new existence. It was a gift and a curse—one that would shape the man he would become. But instead of crumbling beneath the weight of his past, Joren chose to rise. No longer would he be a victim. No longer would he cower in the shadows of those who sought to break him. The world that had once been his enemy would now feel the force of his wrath. With a heart hardened by years of torment, Joren set out to rewrite his story. The shame and helplessness of his previous life fueled his every step as he sought to amass fame, wealth, and power. Yet, his quest for power was not simply about inflicting pain on those who wronged him—it was a drive to prove to himself that he was no longer that broken child, that he could become something greater. But the world he found himself in was far from simple. It was a land filled with its own dangers, politics, and power struggles, and Joren quickly realized that the pursuit of power was more complicated than he ever imagined. As he begins to rise through the ranks of this new world, Joren must face not only the demons of his past but the temptations of his newfound abilities. Will he be consumed by his thirst for revenge and the allure of power, or will he find redemption and forge a new path for himself? Each step he takes forces him to confront not just his enemies, but the question of who he truly wants to become. In the end, will he be a ruler, a tyrant, or something entirely different? Joren’s journey is one of self-discovery, as he battles the forces of both his past and his present in his quest for dominance—and ultimately, to shape the world in his own image. Chapter 28 - Power Levels

"Okay to start off, you should know about what a mana circle is, correct?" Glenn asked

"Yes, I know what it is," Joren responded

"Good. Do you know how many a person can have?"

Joren shook his head not knowing the answer to that.

"Each time a person exceeds their body's mana capacity, they form a circle around their heart. As far as we know, the highest level of power one can achieve is 10 circles. No one in history has exceeded 10 circles. Reaching that level is hard enough, so exceeding it would be astronomically harder than reaching it." Glenn explained

"Why is reaching the 10th circle hard? If you just keep absorbing mana, wouldn't reaching it be as easy as any other circle?" Joren honestly didn't know the answer to this. He had read novels that always made reaching the next level of power harder than the last. But he never understood why it's harder. If you need to absorb energy, just absorb it since it's infinite.

"That's not how it works. There are many factors that make reaching the next circle harder than the previous circle. The first factor is the mana capacity of a person's body. The higher the circle you are, the more mana you can hold in your body which means it takes longer to break through to the next circle. The second factor is that each time you break through, the mana you can absorb gets less and less. The reason behind this is that as you take in mana, nature sees you as a part of it, so as you become closer to nature, nature doesn't see the need to provide you with as much mana as it did before."

Joren took in all this information not wanting to miss a single thing.

"The third factor is that since you reach the 5th circle, your mana undergoes a metamorphosis. You see when we absorb mana, we are also absorbing impurities and stimulating the impurities that we already have in our bodies. The impurities we have in our bodies are things we expel when we go to the bathroom, or the unnecessary things we have in our bodies. Having too much sugar in your body can count as an impurity. Anything that doesn't help our bodies is an impurity. The other type of impurity is the two other types of energy in the world."

'What? Two other types of energy? I haven't seen anything about two other energies that exist in this world. I have heard of Divine energy but that's only something God's possess.'

"I know you might be confused but yes there are three types of energy in the world. Not a lot of people know this. Anyway, the first type of energy is called mana. It's the energy that the main races use."

"Main races?" Joren asked

"Yes. Two other races exist outside of the five you know. The first ones are the Angels. They use what's called Spirit energy. The other race is known as Demons, they use what's called Infernal Energy. Spirit energy and Infernal energy are polar opposites. Spirit is positive while infernal is negative. So if there is a positive and negative energy, there has to be a neutral one, and that's mana." Glenn continued

"Anyway getting back to my point, the main races can't use Spirit or Infernal energy and since it's in the mana we absorb, it becomes impurities. So when you reach the 5th circle, the mana in your body evolves to not only expel all the impurities out of the body, but it also makes your mana pure, and every time you absorb mana, it automatically removes the impurities before it enters your body.

But this means the amount of mana you absorb although purer, is less than normal. Because of this, reaching the 5th circle is known as the second phase. A person from no circle to 4th circle is called a first-phase cultivator while someone from 5th to 10th circle is called a second-phase cultivator. But while a person who is a 2nd circle can maybe stand a chance against someone who's a 3rd circle given the right circumstance, someone in the 5th circle cannot fight against someone in the 6th circle and so on." Glenn finished his lesson on the power of the world.

"Woah, that's a lot. I didn't know things would be this complicated." It took Joren to fully absorb all of this information. Although he assumed advancing to the next circle would take time and effort, he didn't know it would be this hard.

"Uncle Glenn, how strong are you?" Joren asked

"I'm at the peak of the 2nd circle." He stated casually

"Peak?"

"Oh, circles are split into smaller ranks. It ranges from early, mid, late, and peak stages. Once you reach the peak of your current circle, you know that you will break through sometime soon. But sometimes you can get a bottleneck and be stuck in your current stage for years. Alright enough chit-chat, let's begin."

Joren closed his eyes and circulated his mana. He then started guiding his mana toward his heart where the mana started wrapping around it. In order to create a mana circle, you need to put all of the mana in your body into the circle and make it connect. If you cannot connect your mana to form a circle, or in the actual sense, a ring, the mana will collapse and backfire on the person.

From every part of his body, Joren felt his mana rushing towards his heart and the mana felt as if it was grabbing it tightly. The pressure it gave off made him feel lightheaded and his chest felt like he was deep underwater. He could feel his body losing strength but that didn't deter him from completing his task.

After thirty minutes, his mana circle was finally completed. As soon as each end connected, his body surged with energy. The mana radiating off his body made it appear like he was engulfed by a white flame.

After the energy around him dispersed, Joren started absorbing mana back into his empty body. Forming a circle drained his body of mana making it feel like he was an ordinary person, but as soon as he felt the mana enter him, he could feel his strength return and after another thirty minutes, he opened his eyes.

"Congratulations, you are now a first-circle cultivator." Glenn patted Joren on the back and walked inside his house.

Clasping his hand, Joren could feel the power coming from him. 'And this is only the first circle? I can't wait to see how strong I become once I advance to the next levels.' He then walked inside the house as well, looking forward to taking a bath as Grace followed behind him.
