DEALING WITH CLIMATE CHANGE
Shifting to Clean Energy.
Phasing out climate degrading sources of energy.
Restoration of ecosystems.
Raising awareness on the humanitarian crisis caused by climate change.
Bridging economy and ecology.
SHIFTING TO CLEAN ENERGY
Making Clean Energy affordable.
Utilizing sources of energy such as solar, wind etc.
Scientific efforts to refine clean energy.
PHASING OUT CLIMATE DEGRADING SOURCES OF ENERGY
Phasing out fossil fuels.
Making fossil fuels unprofitable.
RESTORATION OF ECOSYSTEMS
Restoration of forests.
Reducing/Eliminating land degrading ventures.
Protecting endangered wildlife.
Scientific efforts to reduce CO2 emissions and improve air quality.
RAISING AWARENESS ON THE HUMANITARIAN CRISIS CAUSED BY CLIMATE CHANGE
Media efforts to create awareness on the effects of climate change.
Creating awareness on the humanitarian crisis caused by climate change.
The realization that climate change is a personal danger.
BRIDGING ECONOMY AND ECOLOGY
Making land degrading ventures unprofitable thus creating a phase shift.
Making eco-friendly ventures profitable thus directing the phase shift towards these.
This phase shift will simultaneously create a scaling up of eco-friendly solutions while scaling down eco-harmful ventures.
Eco harmful businesses will have to change to eco-friendly ventures to remain profitable so competition that fuels positive creativity can be directed towards eco friendliness.
Businesses previously antagonistic towards eco-friendliness will have to invest in it to remain profitable and may change their minds towards it.
SEEKING SOLUTIONS TO CLIMATE CHANGE(A HYBRIDIZED APPROACH)
ADAPTABILITY
Involves design that takes the effects of climate change into consideration and transforms these disadvantages into advantages.
MITIGATION
Utilization of methods to control and eliminate the causes of climate change and thus reduce its effects.
REVERSAL
Utilizing skills learnt from mitigation and adaptability. Involves combating the effects of climate change with polar opposite methods. Eg. For deforestation, afforestation, for fossil fuels, clean energy. There is currently technology to remove CO2 from the air and purify it by converting it to Oxygen for release. There are also projects to combat desertification with Greenhouses. The main issue here is to combine these diverse solutions and scale them up. For instance, if we combine the projects to combat desertification by repopulating areas devoid of trees with trees with the project to erect artificial trees that mimic the absorption of CO2 and release of Oxygen, a substantial amount of greenhouse gases can be removed from the atmosphere and Oxygen could be released to thicken the Ozone Layer. This can be scaled up but it must be done with caution. It would be necessary to create devices to measure the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere as well as that of Carbon Dioxide as well as to regulate absorption and release.
Then there is the possible project to irrigate deserts thus increasing the capacity to reforest them. Irrigating deserts also creates a path for the excess water caused by rising sea levels to flow. Marine water seems to have the capacity to support plant life and the salts these waters contain would be absorbed by the desert soil in the form of soil minerals.
Scaling up afforestation, desert irrigation with Marine Water(A project to return fertility to deserts) and the erection of artificial trees that remove CO2 from the atmosphere can reduce the effects of global warming in the atmosphere. If the rate of global warming is reduced, the temperature of the ocean should reduce as well in turn reducing the melting of Ice at the Poles which in turn affects the global sea level rise. An approach like this could lead to a reversal in the effects of global warming.
