Imagine a world. High on the technological summit. Flying cars, floating buildings, and people dressed up in strange fashions that would only make you think of the future. Future Earth if you want to think that way. Imagine the skies full of sunshine. Perhaps birds fly past and the occasional breeze makes the colorful autumn leaves dance in the tree branches.
A beautiful sight right? But that isn't right. That's just the billboard sign that's starting to peel from lack of care. It's pure colors now turned into dirtied and blood covered tones from rotting corpses that litter the streets. Buildings and skyscrapers can be seen rusting, overgrown, and broken down. Grass grows through the asphalt roads and trees have grown to be dozens of not hundreds of feet taller than before.
Some of the dilapidated houses are now filled with the growling of beasts that echo through the broken windows and grime covered hallways. Even some of the plants are more violent or wild from the carnivorous Venus fly traps that can swallow a man whole. All the way to the snake grass that has blades sharp as steel and capable of draining anything of blood in seconds.
All the violent and monstrous things can be easily explained.
This is actually earth. Or at least the part without the humans in it.
Many years ago (give or take a couple hundred) the earth was dying. In humanities great attempt to expand and grow their technology they forgot to take care something rather important. Their own own planet. Skies were filling with storms from constant pollution. The trees weren't producing as much oxygen. Some would even say that seeing the sun was a rare occurrence due to the constant smog.
Of course humanity made many attempts to return the world to the way it was before. Some even friend to remove technology entirely from their lives. But none of it made a difference. The world was too far gone. And so the Earth died. But not in the way they expected.
Great cracks and earthquakes shook the planet to its core. Super storms raged across the skies wiping away the smog and raining down everything elincluding the kitchen sink with every tornado, typhoon, and Tsunami it could muster. Every city was destroyed and left in ruins during what many might have called the world's death throws.
But it wasn't a death throw. It was giving birth. Something emerged from within Earth's core. A being so strange and powerful that those who were too close died instantly. The humans later came to call it GOD. Made of pure energy and seething with rage he destroyed half of the humans that remained on a whim.
"You destroyed my world. Now I have to remake it. Now I have killed off 1'486'732'145 of the remaining inhabitants of your race. Exactly half of your kind. If you seek to continue your race then you must survive in my world. Damage it again and I will wipe your race out in it's entirety."
It said before leaving.
And just like that the world began anew. But not like mankind hoped. God had changed many things and gave no warning for what was to come.
Small meteors and comets rained across the earth increasing its size and changing the layout of its continents. Mankind hid to the best of its abilities from the onslaught of the heavens. Many made it. But few truly understood that this was the quiet before the storm.
Flora and Fauna began to grow back in droves. Grass, trees, flowers, and even plants that had been extinct since dinosaurs roamed the world. Many of the surviving beasts began to change mutating at an alarming rate. Cows and bulls grew to enormous sizes with hides capable of withstanding tank rounds. Chickens grew to become as tall as people, with armored feathers and scaled legs. Their talons as sharp as swords and their beaks able to rip the top off of cars.
Even bugs changed to be bigger, deadlier, and more heavily armored than before.
And just like that humanity went from the Hard mode difficulty to Legendary. Just like a video game.
Humans began to hide as best they could. Making as many makeshift bunkers and hiding holes as possible to ensure their survival. All the while subjugating the evolved creatures for food. Non-evolved creatures were kept for food or entertainment amidst the struggle.
Fast forward hundreds of years later. Cars rust in the roadways as nothing but axles and broken down tires litter the streets. The corpses that lay on the ground are being eaten away by the disgusting sludge that lays across their bodies leaving a noxious burning smell in the air.
A sign hangs above the street behind the billboard. "Welcome to New Magrath" it read.
And amidst the monstrous carnage and the unnaturally loud sound of skittering insect-like feet. My true story begins.
Zoom in on a cage large enough to hold a lion. But instead there was a built up system of wood platforms and varying nests from different rodents. Zooming in further on a nest in the top right is a grey squirrel nest. It's inhabitants having just given birth to a set of 3 pups. One of the pups is seen squirming slightly as though it's having a bad dream.
(My darling.... You must wake up.) A woman's voice calls.
(Come on Boy. Naps are for when you're dead.) A mans angry voice echoes.
(Brother! You have to get up! You promised!) A little girls voice calls out. Crying and sniffling sounds following her plea.
My eyes slowly open. The world is blurred and the blinding light hurts. I close my eyes again. "Five more minutes." I try to grown out. (Squeak)
I feel something thick and fluffy fall on my face and I try to swipe it away only to find it swats me again and again till I open my eyes entirely to peak at what's bothering me. Only to freeze where I am.
The biggest squirrel I have ever seen is sitting before me.
