Chapter 31

“And you get double use from the land.”

“Exactly.”

“Let me talk to Rusty about that,” Eric said. “He might have some ideas on how and where to round up some temporary help.”

“You think?”

“Yeah, I think so.” Eric poured batter onto the grid of the waffle maker, closed the lid, and flipped a switch. “Get yourself a plate, and I’ll have a nice crisp waffle to put on it in exactly three minutes.”

Later, as they walked around the second floor of the house, their wanderings took them into a guest bedroom at the southwest corner of the building. The minute they crossed the threshold into the room, the sudden drop in temperature stunned them.

“You’re taking an awful chance, slipping into the house like this,” Wade said.

“I had to see you,” Moses said. “It’s dark outside, and I can be out of that window and into that tree before you know it.”

Wade locked his door, opened his arms, and embraced Moses.
