Chapter 124: Farewell, Part 4

Håkon screamed as he woke, fangs out, snarling—and grunted in pain as the necromancer backhanded him. "What did you do?" the necromancer demanded.

Swallowing, trying to soothe his aching throat, Håkon hoarsely replied, "Sleep?" That earned him another backhand. He tasted his own blood in his mouth, coughed and spat it out, then licked spittle and blood from before from his lips. "I don't—what happened?"

"My barrier has fractured, you thrice-damned hound of hell!" the necromancer snarled. "I cannot repair it. What did you do? Tell me what you did!" He backhanded Håkon again, punched and smacked him over and over, screaming epithets all the while. "Tell me! Tell me! Tell me!"

Håkon grit his teeth, tried to protect his head as he endured the storm of blows. When the necromancer finally stopped and collapsed to the floor, Håkon said, "I've done nothing to your damned barrier. How could I? You have me chained to a wall with blessed steel. I'm incapable of doing anything."
