After their victory in the Kai test, Rael and Eira felt more confident. They had shown that, even though they were novices, they had the potential to take on serious challenges. As they made their way back toward Green City after spending the night in the forest, the atmosphere seemed charged with a new energy, a mixture of anticipation and pride.
-I can't believe how well we did," said Eira with a beaming smile as they walked along the tree-lined path. That battle in the forest was amazing. Bulbasaur had never worked so hard before.
Rael nodded, though he couldn't stop thinking about what had happened in the battle. His victory was exciting, but he felt there was something more, something that was driving him beyond simply proving himself. As Eevee trotted alongside him, he remembered his promise: to become a trainer worthy of his Pokémon's trust.
-Yes, but we still have a lot to learn," Rael replied, thinking of the future battles they would surely face. Kai's challenge had only been a preview of what lay ahead.
As they approached the city limits, Rael felt a strange familiarity in the atmosphere, as if the wind brought back memories of a past he would rather forget. His mind drifted back to those days in Paleta Town, before he received Eevee, when he only dreamed of being a trainer. In those days, there was a figure who had always tested him, a childhood rival who challenged him in everything he did: Daven.
Daven had been the typical competitive kid, always one step ahead of Rael, always the first in everything. For years, Rael had put up with the constant rivalry, but there was something about Daven that pushed him, that made him want to be better. They hadn't seen each other since Rael left Palette Town, and all this time, Rael had tried not to think about him.
But now, just as they were about to reach the outskirts of Green City, a familiar voice called out to him.
-Rael, is that the best you can do?
Rael stopped in his tracks. That voice. He knew perfectly well who it was, though he hadn't heard it in months. Turning, he saw it. There, standing at the edge of the road, was Daven, a Poké Ball in his hand and a cocky grin on his face. Beside him, a fierce Arcanine stood tall, glaring at Rael and Eevee with a mixture of defiance and disdain.
-Daven? -Rael could barely contain his surprise.
Daven approached slowly, his eyes shining with a confidence that Rael found irritating. He hadn't changed a bit since the last time he'd seen him, except for the fact that he now seemed even more sure of himself.
-So you've finally started your journey," Daven said, watching Eevee with a smirk. But it looks like you haven't made that much progress. I thought you would have caught a few more Pokémon by now.
Rael felt his hand tighten around Eevee's Poké Ball. He had been waiting for this moment, the chance to show Daven that he wasn't the same boy he used to be. But the arrogance in Daven's voice made him doubt. Was he really ready to take on someone like him?
Eira, who had been watching the scene curiously, stepped forward.
-Do you know this guy, Rael? -he asked, with a suspicious look at Daven.
-Yes, he's... an old acquaintance," Rael replied, his tone more serious than he intended. Daven and I grew up in Paleta Town, but we hadn't seen each other since I started my journey.
Daven chuckled.
-"Old acquaintance, huh. I think what Rael means is that he was always my shadow. But now that we're both trainers, I thought it would be fun to see if you've actually improved at all.
Rael clenched his fists, feeling the frustration grow inside him. All his training, everything he had learned with Eira and the Guardians of the Green Forest, seemed to be called into question by Daven's presence. But he also knew that this was the time to show how much he had grown, both to himself and to Eevee.
-Do you want a battle, Daven? -Rael asked, trying to remain calm.
-Exactly," Daven replied, tossing the Poké Ball into the air. His Arcanine roared, ready for a fight. Let's see if you and that Eevee can keep up.
Rael looked at Eevee, who was watching him with determination in its eyes. Although Arcanine was clearly bigger and more powerful, Rael knew that brute strength wasn't everything in a battle. He had learned a lot about strategy, adaptability and, above all, confidence. Now it was time to put it into practice.
-Eevee, let's go! -Rael threw his Poké Ball, and Eevee stepped forward onto the field, ready for battle.
The battle began quickly. Daven, confident in the speed and power of his Arcanine, ordered a "Flare," and the towering fire Pokémon launched a torrent of flames toward Eevee. Rael barely had time to react, but he remembered the advice he had received at camp about taking advantage of the environment.
-Eevee, jump over the rocks! -Rael shouted.
Eevee, agile as ever, dodged the attack by leaping over a series of nearby rocks. The flames flew past, leaving a smoking trail on the ground, but Eevee was already in position for a counterattack.
-Use fast attack! -Rael ordered.
Eevee lunged with speed towards Arcanine, hitting it in the flank before Daven's Pokémon could react. The blow was fast and accurate, but not enough to knock the fire giant down.
Daven, however, didn't seem worried.
-Arcanine, use Fire Fang," he ordered with a smile.
The Arcanine reacted quickly, its maw engulfing in flames as it tried to bite Eevee. Rael, his heart in his throat, knew that such an attack could be devastating to his partner.
-Dodge and counterattack with bite! -Rael shouted.
Eevee narrowly dodged the attack, spinning in midair to launch its own bite attack. Its tiny fangs dug into Arcanine's skin, driving it back with a snarl.
The battle continued in a rapid exchange of blows, with Arcanine launching powerful attacks, but Eevee always managing to dodge and respond with agility. Rael and Eevee were in sync, working as one, while Daven seemed to underestimate what Rael had learned.
Finally, after a series of precise and quick attacks, Arcanine, exhausted by Eevee's persistence, fell to its knees. Daven watched in disbelief as his Pokémon collapsed in defeat.
-It can't be," Daven muttered, clearly surprised.
Rael, breathing heavily, felt a mixture of relief and pride. He had proven, both to himself and to Daven, that he was not the same boy he once was.
-We did it, Eevee," Rael said, kneeling down to hug his partner.
Daven, however, said nothing more. He simply returned his Arcanine to his Poké Ball, looked at Rael with a mixture of frustration and respect, and turned to leave.
-This won't be the last time we see each other, Rael," Daven said over his shoulder. Next time, things will be different.
And with that, he disappeared into the trees, leaving Rael and Eira alone on the road. Although the battle had been intense, Rael felt that he had overcome a major obstacle from his past. No matter what happened in the future, he knew he could always count on Eevee to face any challenge.
Eira watched him silently before smiling.
-That was a good fight, Rael. Daven didn't know what was coming his way.
Rael smiled, feeling for the first time in a long time that his path as a trainer was clear.
