Ch 32. Battling Wendy

(A/N: I tried some new things with the way the battles are written [Putting the names before the spoken texts] Do comment if it is an improvement or not.)

After the beatdown of the sociopath stalker called Gengar, the calm and peace had returned once more to Ares and his pokemon.

They had continued they journey across the road, battling pokemon trainers and wild pokemon they encountered on the way. In that time, Umbreon had taken a stance of being his protector during the nights, as he was still on guard against Gengar. When morning came, Umbreon would sleep in his pokeball, sleeping till around noon to be well rested for the later part of the day and night. During the day, Umbreon had left his defenses up to Lucario and the rest of the party, with Mew being the main candidate to secure his safety.

During the time traveling, Lucario and Umbreon would have their training with Mew, which was for about a week. Lucario in the morning, Umbreon in the evening. They would continue this training just a bit before they reached the next gym.

In that short span of a week, they would also train and catch possible pokemon for the team to bolster their overall power. Which was hard, as he didn't want to many overlapping typings in his team. He didn't want to sent too many pokemon back to professor Oak either, so he decided to keep the number of caught pokemon small.

Today, they had encountered another trainer they could battle with. This trainer was a young lady that was a specialist on bird type Pokemon. As Ares and his pokemon had not fought flying pokemon that often, this was a prime opportunity to get some experience under their belt

Seeing this as the best moment to train with Pikachu, who was itching to fight in her new form and show her newfound prowess, Ares accepted the battle request.

Wendy "Thanks a lot. My name is Wendy."

Ares "I'm Ares. Is a two on two battle fine with you?"

Wendy "Yes, that is fine by me."

They set the price money and chose their pokemon carefully, thinking about which pokemon the other side might choose. This was ofcourse easier for Ares, as Wendy's pokemon were likely limited to Kantonian pokemon, decreasing the amount of different flying types by a large margin.

The first pokemon to battle from Wendy's side was a Fearow.

Fearow appeared on the battlefield and took flight as soon as he could, looking over from the sky to see what kind of pokemon he would battle against. Fearow was rather small for a pokemon of his specie, but he was well cared for, which showed itself in the masterful aerial maneuvers Fearow was performing as it increased its distance from the ground.

Throwing out his pokeball at the same time as Wendy, Ares called out Pikachu, who jumped up and down in excitement as electric shocks sparked from her cheeks. Looking up at the Fearow, Pikachu smiled in confidence. It was her first battle and she wasn't going to lose this! She had become strong and wanted to prove it.

Wendy saw her matchup and couldn't help but smile, as she liked to have a disadvantageous battle. It helped a lot when she wanted to become stronger with flying types. She needed to know how to work around those disadvantages to get her the win after all. The wind would surely have her back in those moments, if she had enough experience to ride it.

Wendy "Fearow, Focus Energy"

Ares "Pikachu, Thunderwave"

With the trainers each calling out their moves, the pokemon began their battle. Fearow began to use Focus Energy, increasing his concentration by a lot. He observed Pikachu carefully and had a better feel of where he needed to hit her to increase the damage she received.

Pikachu however did a whole different thing. Sending out electric waves, Pikachu blasted them outwards. Reaching Fearow, electricity began to spark around Fearow's body, making it spasm every now and then. It became a lot harder for Fearow to move, now that it had been inflicted with the paralyze status ailment.

Ares "Pikachu, Agillity."

Seeing a chance now to increase Pikachu's speed, Ares didn't hesitate to take it. Seeing what Ares was up to, Wendy looked at Fearow with worry. It was hard to battle an opponent when her pokemon was paralyzed. She didn't have any moves that could heal Fearow either, so she had to do with the cards she had, especially when an already fast opponent was boosting its speed even more.

Wendy "Fearow, Facade!"

Fearow nodded, diving downwards at an increasing speed as the sparks rustled through his feathers. The paralysis seemed to increase the power he put behind the attack, as more energy seemed to gather.

Ares "Pikachu, dodge it with Quick attack. Then use Shock wave."

Quickly dodging the attack from Fearow, Pikachu rolled to the side as Fearow barely missed her by a hair's breadth. Feeling the wind brush past her, Pikachu quickly got back to her feet and released a Shock wave.

Unable to avoid the attack, Fearow created gusts of wind in the hope to decrease the damage he would be inflicted with. Feeling the attack hit, Fearow was then hit again by a resurgence of the paralysis with an increased ferociousness, making his wings spasm as he was unable to keep them moving. This also meant one thing.

Flying would be impossible.

Falling down, Fearow crashed to the ground.

Wendy "Fearow!"

A bit panicked she couldn't help but cry out, but then became relieved as she saw Fearow get back up again. It wobbled a bit, due to the electric damage and the fall damage, but Fearow still stood up, bearing through the pain he was currently feeling.

Wendy "Roost!"

Wendy called out her move, Fearow quickly surrounding himself with feathers that quicky covered the damaged area's of his body. The once painful stabbing pain were now replaced by soft throbs, the damage not completely healed.

Ares "Pikachu, thunderbolt."

Pikachu rushed towards Fearow, arriving before him within a second. All this time, Pikachu had kept up the use of Agility as much as she could, having increased her speed to the max. Smiling brightly, Pikachu unleashed a powerful thunderbolt straight towards Fearow.

Unable to dodge the thunderbolt on time, Fearow was once again hit. With the temporary healing effect of the move Roost rendered useless by the stacking damage he received, Fearow tried to flee to the air, only to sag down and faint mid motion.

Seeing Fearow go down, Wendy silently returned Fearow to his pokeball. This was a bitter defeat, especially as she wasn't able to do much against the nimble mouse pokemon.

Ares "Good job, Pikachu. You've gotten a lot stronger."

Getting praised, Pikachu embarrassedly rubbed her cheeks in a shy manner. It was great to get praised, even more so when she did her best in this battle.

Returning Pikachu to her pokeball, Ares waited for Wendy to send out her next pokemon. Pikachu had battled enough and he wanted his other pokemon to get some more experience too. A decent trainer like wendy was the perfect opportunity for that.

Doing just that, Wendy revealed her next pokemon to be a Crobat.

The Crobat zigzagged through the air taking in the view as he waited for Ares to reveal his own pokemon. He did not disappoint.

Ares "Time to test out your new form against a strong opponent."

Throwing out a pokeball, Pidgeot appeared on the battlefield, flapping his large wings and created massive waves of dust to swirl up.

Letting out a deafening cry, Pidgeot asserted his dominance over whomever he was currently facing. Seeing the Crobat, Pidgeot focussed his gaze on the fast moving bat, locking on and keeping it within sight.

Wendy "Crobat, Toxic."

Taking the first move, Wendy started with toxic.

It was a good choice, as once his Pidgeot got poisoned, the damage would increase overtime. It would even get worse once Pidgeot was hit with it again. It was an annoying attack to deal with.

Crobat flew forwards at an incredible speed, even stunning Pidgeot a little before he too went on the offensive.

Knowing what to do without being ordered to, Pidgeot immediately increased his speed with Agillity, dodging the purple blobs of poison being shot towards him. The fight now had become one purely for flying types.

Crobat tightly pursued Pidgeot, intent to get closer to him, while Pidgeot only became faster and faster, having quickly tied his own speed against that of Crobat's. Going even further, Pidgeot was able to outmaneuver the quick bat, dodging the poison blobs with ease.

Ares "Pidgeot, Aerial Ace"

Using an attack that always hit its mark, Pidgeot immediately changed directions, instead of continuing to dodge, he closed the distance between him and Crobat in an instant. Taking advantage of the fact that Crobat's had a difficulty of changing direction at high speed, Pidgeot slashed an Aerial Ace at close range, cutting straight through the toxic and against Crobat, making it crash downwards from the force.

Getting hit hard, Crobat was smashed down, only barely avoiding hitting the ground by pushing his double pair of wings to the limit.

Wendy "Crobat! Are you alright?!"

Getting a pained grunt as a reply as Crobat flew back up again.

Wendy "Then use Cross Poison!"

Glancing at his trainer, Crobat nodded, but decided to improve his speed first with Agillity, something that went against his trainers orders. Seeing Crobat stall for a bit, Wendy couldn't help but grimace.

Ares "Pidgeot. Hurricane."

Seeing his chance, now that Crobat had wavered in his actions, Ares gave his orders.

Pidgeot immediately began to create massive gusts of wind as a storm began to brew around them. Forming a raging wind in front of him, the power of the storm swept Crobat in the air, his attempt at increasing his speed foiled, as it was too late to use Cross Poison or another move.

Being slammed all over the place by the fierce wind, Crobat was pelted with debris. Crashing to the ground, Crobat twitched slightly as he fainted under the constant assault of both the flying energy in the attack, as well as the big chunks of debris pulled into the storm.

Sighing in defeat, Wendy returned Crobat to his pokeball.

Pidgeot landed with pride in front of Ares, waiting to hear some praise from his trainer.

Ares "Great battle. Your flying does need some work though."

Having gotten praise, but also feedback on his flying skills, Pidgeot didn't know if he should still be so happy, but shrugged and continued to ruffle up his feathers in pride. He was strong and he knew it. The advice of his trainer only benefitted him, so there was no need to put his pride away at all. He just needed to pay more attention to the more intricate things and everything would work out.

Wendy "Here is the prize money. Your Pidgeot is well trained."

Looking at Pidgeot with a hint of longing, Wendy's intentions were clear as day. Yet he had no intention to give in to her wants at all. Before she could take out a pokeball and make a suggestion, Ares decided to cut her off before she could bring up a trade.

Ares "Thanks. I have to go now. See you."

Returning Pidgeot to his pokeball, Ares left a dejected Wendy behind. He had some other trainers to battle against, as his other pokemon needed some training as well. The pokemon he wanted to use in his next gym battle were Clefairy and Pidgeot after all.
