Cameron's voice was soft, almost a whisper, as he leaned closer to Ava, taking in the familiar scent of her skin. "You look so gorgeous," he mumbled, his lips brushing against her hair. "I think you're glowing more because of the pregnancy hormones."
The comment, though meant to be tender, struck Ava like a cold gust of wind. She turned her head slightly, but before she could pull away, Cameron gently cupped her tear-streaked face in his hands. His thumbs brushed away the stray tears, his touch delicate but firm.
"Ava," he whispered, his voice thick with concern, his brows furrowed as he looked into her tear-filled eyes. "What's wrong? Why are you crying? "
The tenderness in his voice should have comforted her, but instead, it broke the dam holding back all her hurt and frustration. Her chest tightened as more tears spilled over, and she struggled to meet his gaze. The pain was too raw, too fresh.
