Perfectly Scoundrels

Fame, fortune, and glory. Pain, suffering, and despair. The two faces of the same coin. The dungeon offers this and more to those foolish or greedy enough to challenge it. But for Raven, a lowly criminal, it seems like a fair place to hide and lie low after a successful escape from the neighboring kingdom's prison. And who knows, maybe the misfortune that has followed her for her entire life may begin to spin. Artwork by: Nath08

Rare loot

[Card: The mud remorse]

The card had a silvery tone, Raven didn't knew much about those, she knew they were rare items that were dropped from the monsters, even boss monsters had the chance of dropping them, but the chances were slim at best. The important part is that they are item enchantments since they can improve the gear used for those who challenge the dungeon... or those with the money to buy them... with a closer inspection a text appeared from the card.

[The Mud Remorse, an abomination born from envy of the living and the sorrow of those who perished to become part of it. A skeletal figure, it binds the souls of innocent victims who met their doom in the swamp. Cursed with a dark purpose, it seeks only to drown the lungs of its prey with swamp water and fill their stomachs with poisonous marsh fangs, forcing the living to suffer the same agony it endures for eternity.

Effect: The water element magic also gains earth property, transforming normal water magic into mud magic instead.]

Was it any good? She had no idea, but remembering the fetid mud at the dungeon made her want to puke. She ended the monster, but the undead almost finished her too, was it luck? skill? whatever, the battle sometimes are just decided by happenstance. She just happen to have a very flexible body and was angry enough to pull the stunt at the moment.

As she was pondering about nonsense the kid from early entered again into the room. For a moment he just stared at her, he looked somewhat inexpensive, maybe she just wasn't impressive for him.

"Spill it" She said looking at him annoyed.

"I'm just impressed with your race velocity to recover from physical damage" He stated, for a moment she thought the kid would go on a high and mighty talk about taking care of her health, but it wasn't the case "If you survive and are all beaten up make sure to come back and we will try to patch you up" Then he pointed to himself "The name is Breor, grateful for people like you who come in shambles to the clinic, so I get some more practice"

"Hoooo, at least you are honest" The cat girl said smirking "Mine is Raven, hey you can keep the change for the item you guys took" She said with a mischievous smile.

The kid just shrugged and smiled for the first time, that was his intention from the start anyway, but at least expressing it would prevent unintended hostility between them. The girl could at least value someone honest.

"Hey, by the way, I had this in my possesion" She said showing him the card.

"Nnn" He answered nodding his head, it seemed like they saw the card.

"Why you guys didn't take this? I bet it's way more valuable?" The question was valid.

Breor reminded in silence for a moment then he just shrugged again.

"The owner, Ma' Raezee used to be an adventurer, she always had a soft side for broken things like you I guess" He raised one eyebrow "So even if you had your knife you probably wouldn't be able to beat her, even if she is old she still has level 4".

This caught Raven by surprise, she had perceived she wasn't a common granny, but she was actually strong, maybe she already had enough and decided to live the rest of her life doing something useful instead of wasting time in the dungeon like the rest of the dumb people. Like her.

"Know anywhere I can sell this? Can't use it ya see?" She said in a smug yet friendly tone.

"This ain't a pawn shop" The kid said annoyed "But big sis, you are in big trouble trying to sell it on your own" He said.

"Who said I'm alone?" She said placing her arms on her waist.

"Then why were you dropping dead in the street like a stray dog?" He countered.

'Touche' She clicked her tongue, the kid was sharp, the old hag was a good role model it seemed.

"Also, your name is red" He said, she skipped a heartbeat "Hmph... a wanted criminal, maybe a murderer? a bandit or a pirate?"

In this world, after the heroes started appearing, many things changed, including the status windows, the dungeon, the classes... and one of those is the easy way to check if someone is a criminal, their names would appear red in their status, that make everything way harder if you are forced to reveal the status, you won't be able to enter cities, buy or sell on the common commerce or stay at good places were examples. She entered the city using her skill Masquerade, which allowed her to trick other people for a couple of minutes.

"So trying to sell it on a normal store will be a no-no" He finished raising one finger as if he were teaching a brat "You will have to sell it at the black market, which I don't know where it is, and they won't pay you well if you are not known"

Raven had thought the same thing before, but it was going to be harder to earn some money like this, that was one of the reasons she had accepted that jerk Ito into her party, so he could sell the spoils.

"You are such a clever punk" She said messing with his hair "Of course, you have to be clever to work as a medicine man after all"

"Not gonna complain" He said "So visit us again if you are in trouble, gonna put word for you about the card between some people I know, don't throw it away for scraps"

She fist-bumped him and got up, it was time to go, she soon discovered it was a popular clinic run only by the old lady, and she had two apprentices, they weren't a charity, but they got the job done and they don't care about her red name condition, it was bad to scare the clients away the kid said, just talking with him she knew already, he was like her, an orphan, but he had made some good choices where hers were dubious to say the least.

Once back on the streets, she knew she had to make some choices. She could track the treacherous rat who left her to die, or she could track the idiot who sold her to the rat, she could go back to the dungeon again to try luck... but there was something more important first.

'Damn! I need a beer!' She headed back to The Fat Boar, cheap beer is the best beer.
