“Not yet.” I smiled. “What about you? Where do you live?”

“I’ve got an apartment close to the office.”

“Sounds fancy.”

“I guess.” He frowned. “It’s…lifeless. Nothing like this.” He swept his arm around my bright, cheerful kitchen. “I mean, you have herbs.” He pointed to the pots of basil, thyme, and flat-leaf parsley in the window. “I bet you even cook with them,” he muttered.

I did. But before I had time to elaborate, a knock sounded on the front door, followed by a key in the lock, and someone entering.

“Jude! You home?”

Vee stiffened at the sound of my brother’s voice and the guard that had been down since he’d shown up on my doorstep snapped into place.
