Awakening: System Online

6:54 Pm, October 31st, Year 2189

Eighteen years old Slaine could be seen vigorously typing on his keyboard with his left hand, his eyes focused on the screen, while his other hand was busy scribbling notes and drawing on a journal alongside a headset on his head playing his favorite songs.

A Multitasking freak some called him, he believed doing two things at a time helps boost the brain capacity, challenging it to do more work than it had done before, understandable, that being said, he was busy researching and programming.

Working in a Research and Technology laboratory has always been one of his dream jobs, he would be able to add more to what he knows about technology and also magic and then live a good life afterwards.

He believed technology and Magic were the only things that would make him successful. However, despite being the youngest in the lab, he had a thousand years worth of knowledge.

"Slaine, slow down buddy, You're too fast, I can't keep up"

Slaine threw a brief glance to the blondy beside him still not stopping. He scoffed and turned his gaze back to his computer, ignoring whatever the guy beside him said.

To him anyone who would ask him to slow down was just trying to drag him back and then surpass him, so he didn't see any reason why he would slow down for anyone.

As he turned to continue, he was interrupted once more, resulting in an angry growl that frightened the guy beside him.

"Slaine Rivers!" He heard a voice from the elevator, Martinez secretary's high pitched and sharp tone, a smooth voice that seemed to give off pride or maybe, control.

His frown deepened, as she approached him. Elegantly dressed as always, a black pencil skirts that hugged her body perfectly and a shirt that barely covered her cleavage.

Slaine sank back into his seat, sighing tiredly and shutting his eyes, exhausted already, without knowing or doing what she had called him for..

"Mister Martinez needs your attention in the lab," The lady stated briefly looking down at him, her gaze void of emotions.

He let out a tired sigh, turned off his computer, closed his journal and rose to his feets. He walked ahead of her, planning to leave her to take the stairs as a punishment for interrupting him.

Unfortunately she hurried in before he could close it, pressed the button and waited as the elevator whisked them to their floor.

****

The elevator beeped open, blinding white lights, beeping of machines and the numerous gadgets in the room welcomed Slaine. Martinez's secretary showed him to an office, beside it was a laboratory, a high-tech room with metal walls, a see through wall made of glass that gave a view of a strange machine.

The room was noisy with beeps and hums from many gadgets and devices mostly computers with different information on the screens. The bright white lights made the room feel eerie and tense,

The Machine looked similar to a CT scan but he just couldn't name what exactly it was ,with different tubes connected to it, straps to hold what ever or whoever the subject would be. It lit a new kind of curiosity in him. He continued staring and taking metal notes of the machine beyond that glass wall oblivious of the sudden eerie feel around him.

It was unusually silent, the other scientist had paused what they were doing, electricity was now directed to the machine Slaine kept staring at, still unaware of the change around him.

His boss, Martinez sneaked up behind him, raising a baton above his head, caring less about the damage he would cause if he hit Slaine, what he desired was far more valuable than Slaine's condition.

However, Slaine had noticed movements behind him, he remained unfazed, waiting for who ever it was to speak, when it took too long, Slaine turned around swiftly but unfortunately collided with the baton in Martinez hands, sending him to an unconscious state immediately.

11:30 Pm

Slaine's eyes shot open, shutting back as quick as it opened, unable to withstand the amount of light in the room, he tried turning his head, moving his hands or legs but nothing worked, it was like he was frozen or maybe tied up? It then came to him that he was in the room beyond the glass wall from earlier.

"Sorry for the shock, Slaine, hope you're comfortable?" Martinez, asked with a sly smirk, standing on Slaine's left side.

"Why am I in this?" He inquired, forgetting the fact he was speaking to his boss, his voice was void of any emotions but his eyes had darkened showing how infuriated he was.

"I want to see the type of knowledge you carry in that head" Martinez answered briefly as he turned to a computer screen. Slaine watched Martinez curiously, wondering what exactly the machine was for.

'What exactly would you need my knowledge for' Slaine asked himself, doubting if he had the information others would desire, especially Martinez who found faults in everything he did.

Oblivious of the fact Martinez was envious of the amount of knowledge he absorbs everyday, by researching on the right sites and carrying out tests to prove them.

He wanted that knowledge too, with that he could take over the Tech world, gaining popularity and earning from wealthy business men who would need his research for their products. He always wondered why Slaine had such gifts but never used it to get what he wanted. Just thinking of how useless Slaine angered him even more.

"What would your last words be?"

Slaine furrowed his brows, wondering what type of question was that, he however thought of it and sighed, disappointed that he did not have a single word to say before his demise, "Nothing." He uttered, almost silently.

Martinez stared at him completely unfazed, he was deeply troubled at how Slaine was reacting. A normal human being would fight his way out of such a situation but Slaine had no care at all, it was like he was just living because he had no choice.

Shaking off the thoughts, he turned on the machine, turning to face Slaine who just closed his eyes and waited patiently for everything to be done, Martinez looked at the screen of the tablet and watched the amount of information that flooded it, ranging from Technology to Magic, he was beyond astonished.

Years ago, magic began manifesting in the world, but no one had an idea of how to use it, yet an Eighteen years old boy knows the history of magic and even how it worked.

The information flooding into the tablet, became so much, that it overloaded the drives and fried it completely, Martinez hurriedly, connected the wires to the Company's system and turned to Slaine who was just staying still, not even flinching a bit.

Unfortunately the system also got overloaded and fried but then something happened, he spotted one particular thing among the information the computer had received, it was about the existence of Non humans that would roam or probably take over the world, draining the amount of confidence Martinez had.

He watched the machine fall apart emitting sparks that affected the room itself, the lights went off one by one, scaring everyone on that floor. The workers began to panic, scurrying around for safety, some trying to protect their projects while others had already left.

Martinez looked over to where Slaine was and saw him laughing silently, like he wasn't about to die ,he was terrified yet overwhelmed, if at eighteen Slaine had such an amount of knowledge strong enough to crash an entire system who knows what would happen if he was older or actually tasted magic.

"Impossible, you will not be a threat in a world where my children will live, I will not let another threat roam free on earth" He uttered and hurriedly opened a drawer, he took out a gun and removed the safety, then he held the gun to Slaine's forehead.

He watched Slaine's laugh die turning into a frown, ignoring what his last statement meant, although he knew it meant his father was a threat as well.

"Don't you dare" Slaine warned, he was not sure how the after-life would be like, neither was he frightened, instead he did not what to feel like a disappointment. He could remember his father's words vividly 'Don't die without leaving a mark' and that was exactly what he was planning to do, well until fate decided to slap him in the face.

He sighed out and closed his eyes, waiting till he heard the gunshot..if he counted correctly, he heard three shots but didn't feel as much pain as he imagined.

The moment Slaine felt his senses dieing; from his ears to his skin, he could only wish he had done more, do what his father couldn't accomplish and show the world that Magic existed.

00:00

Amidst the vast expanse of darkness, a voice, sharp and concise arose the moment Slaine's senses died, his soul in form of a grey ball, floating around the void aimlessly.

The darkness faded as a faint glow of purple and green appeared, then Slaine's soul froze at the center.
