Amber and her mother both took off their shoes at the doorstep and made their way into the house. A maid spotted them from afar and ran to them. She noticed they both looked sad.
"Welcome back home, Mrs. Darlington. Where is Mr. Darlington? Were the doctors able to treat him?" The maid asked with a smile, with her hand folded across her chest. Mrs. Darlington didn’t pay attention to her, she took her seat on the couch with Amber, who was stroking her back.
"Mom, don’t cry anymore. Everything is going to be okay." Amber said, trying to console her, and looked up at the maid.
"Go make her favorite coffee." Amber declared. The maid bowed slightly and walked away in the direction of the kitchen. Mason stared at them from the front door with pitiful eyes. He knew they were going to be okay. He walked over to them and stood in front of them. Amber looked up at him and her eyes lit up.
"You should go home. You must be exhausted," she said, forcing a smile. She knew he must be tired. She was also tired from looking around for her father. Mason stole a glance at Mrs. Darlington, who was relaxed on the chair, looking in one direction, she wasn’t saying anything or making any movements, she just sat there like a statue. He grabbed Amber’s hand and hauled her away to the entrance of the house. He rested his hand on the door, maintaining eye contact with her.
"I am sorry for your loss," he said, grasping her soft hand and stroking it firmly. "I don't know how it feels to lose a family member, but please know that I am always here for you."
"I want you to stay strong. I know your father would be proud if he saw you consoling your mom right now," he said with a faint smile. She blinked back the tears in her eyes that were striving to come out.
"Thank you, let’s talk tomorrow, okay?" She said in a low tone, and pulled her hand from his grip. His hand hung in the air as she turned around and walked away to her mother on the couch.
Hold on my love, this will pass and you will be much better; I will try my best to fill the void left by your father. Mason thought and slowly shut the main door. He took out his phone and removed it from flight mode, dialing the detective number as he walked towards the highway.
Diana and the police had surrounded the warehouse. The fire department had also arrived and they were trying their best to put out the fire. The flames were still increasing as they poured water on it and also used a sprinkler. Diana was feeling uneasy. She wanted to go into the fire.
The press also arrived in no time and the scene was filled with people and cops. The reporters looked happy about the situation. They were broadcasting live on TV. The fire in the warehouse was increasing, and if they didn’t stop it, it would spread to other nearby buildings that were close to them.
Her partner walked over to her; he had a feeling she was sad about the whole situation. She looked worried and scared at the same time. They were trying their best to stay far away from the fire because of the intense heat.
"After looking around the area, there is no sign of the car," he said.
"Whose name is the car registered under?" she inquired.
"Luthor, the street lord, and I think he is on the run. There is no way we can catch him, even if we look at all the CCTV footage of the city, and I heard this is his hideout. He must have run when he saw us coming." he remarked.
"I…I don’t know what is wrong with me, but I have a feeling there is someone in this fire. He wouldn’t have started a fire if there was nothing in the warehouse," she thought.
"I don't know Diana, I think you're overthinking it; maybe he just set fire to the warehouse because he didn't want us to see anything, or he wanted us to be distracted while he flee," he speculated. She gasped and stared at him.
"You are right! He must have an ulterior motive…but I need to clear my doubts. " She said she attempted to walk to one of the fire trucks when he held her hand.
"Where do you think you are going? Don’t try to take the laws into your own hand." he said, gazing at her.
"I know what I am doing, you don’t have to remind me," she said, and forcefully pulled her hand from his grip, with his finger scratching her fair skin.
She walked over to a man who was holding a fire extinguisher and extended her hand to him. He stared at her with a confused look. She forcefully took it from him with gritted teeth.
"I need it," she said to him, and started running in the direction of the warehouse.
"Detective Diana! Detective Diana!!" Her partner yelled as she was heading toward it.
"Detective Diana! Diana! No, no, no!!!" He yelled at the top of his lungs as she ran into the fire. He also wanted to follow her when he was held back by two cops.
"Let go of me. Why didn’t you guys stop her?" he inquired, swaying in their grip and they tightened their grip.
"You guys have no right to stop me since you didn’t stop Diana!" He roared, moving continuously with his mouth wide open. The reporters started filming him as he was struggling.
"Detective Diana has run into the fire and her partner is worried about her. Why would she do such a thing? Does she wanna die?" A reporter asked, standing in front of the camera with a mic in her mouth.
"Ugh! Let go of me. I am not going in there. I promise," he said to the cops, and they let go of him. He took a deep breath and bent, putting his hand on his knee.
