Chapter 5
Arriving at Dawn, they didn´t have time to rest.
"There is an ongoing civil war in Germania." Said Hanz.
"Unbelievable." Said Otto.
Both men were sweating while fondling the many documents, maps and reports sparyed down on the table.
Surprisingly, they were the only ones in charge of the unit. Being a unit of the SS, the Ukrainian nationals, despite being older or outright having more experience than then, didn´t take the lead or revolt. At least, not yet.
Negev couldn´t believe there were man so disciplined as them. As civil strife engulfed Germany proper, this was the perfect opportunity for a unit such as this to rebel against the few Germans who controlled it. After all, these were the people who enslaved their nation and committed many atrocities in the name of Hitler in this country.
Ukrainian officials would come and go, asking for orders or discussing ordinary details with the two, but always with utmost respect and loyalty.
"Why are they so loyal?" Otto replied to Negev´s question.
"Yes, shouldn´t they revolt against us since we are masters over their country?" Asked Negev.
"That´s an interesting question for you to ask, dame." He said, putting away on top of the table the coffee cup she just delivered to him. "You see, we aren´t masters over their country, we are their liberators."
"Their liberators?" Said Negev.
"Yes, their liberators." Replied Otto. "The Ukrainians, despite not being all too fond of us, were our allies during the war. They turned their back to their Slavic brethren and saw the light of the Aryan race shine upon them."
Otto took a sip of his cup.
"They are dedicated soldiers." Otto said. "Dedicated and loyal, showing their valor to all of the Reich. In return, we gave back to them the blessing that is national socialism, wich they gladly accepted."
His rambling about race and ideology started to take a toll on Negev.
"It did help, however," Otto finaly finished the coffee cup. "that the Russians and their despicable leadership infested by Jews made the Ukrainians die of hunger by the thousands. As you might imagine, at least we gave them food, and the promise of revenge against their misled brothers fueled their wills to fight for us."
He was talking about the Holodomor, a tragedy that fell upon the Ukrainian people, as the communists in Moscow tried their hands in the economy. This was probably one of the main reasons that made the Ukrainians side with the Germans during the war
Even the Black Army under Nestor Makhno ended up fighting the Bolsheviks in the end of the civil war, despite both being driven by the communist ideology.
After that, Otto and Hanz decided to move the division´s headquarters further away from Kiev. Both were unsure of what to do, to remain here in Ukraine and fight for one of it´s factions which they favored more, or to try and make a return to Germany proper, to help on the main fight in the capital.
They decided to stay in Ukraine. Since almost all of the soldiers in the unit were Ukrainian volunteers, it made sense for them to fight for their country first, and then aid the Germans. There were plenty of good Aryans in Germania to help out in the main fight, but this was not true for Ukraine, that was their reasoning.
At that night, Negev finally had the time to rest and to look upon the contents of the sealed document that she had received.

You are to help to the best of your abilities the Black Army, who has now officially sided with us. News from the situation in Ukraine and in the Reich are now blurred by the uprising, but are not to be distracted with it.
A coordinated attack by members of the Resistance are to be made against the "Florian Geyer" division, with the objective of destroying it. The date isn´t certain, but expect to be required in the next days.
When the division is destroyed, you are to make your way out of the country, as to be employed elsewhere. Be prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Negev gulped, and hastily burned down the document.
She spent the night restless.
