Chapter 1- A very long day
Jane woke up with a sharp pain that seemed to end her life in a minute.
Feeling dizzy as hell she managed to get down from her bed looking like an old crazy lady with huge eye bags under her eyes. "I am surely tired of this misery of a job," she said in a low tone not wanting to worsen her migraine.
Taking a long cold bath while rubbing her eye bag with her washcloth to reduce it. She hurried out of the bath when she heard the beeping sound of her alarm clock telling her that she would soon be late in the next hour.
Hurrying up her preparation and breakfast while still making sure not to forget anything she would need at work. Jane made the last touches on her outfit that Friday and having one last glance at the standing mirror with a smile she dashed out of the house forgetting her client's work file she had put in the side drawer earlier that night. Hurrying to the bus station she sat down waiting for the bus to come.
Not long enough the bus pulled and she hurried inside, swiping her card and hurried to the only vacant seat remaining on the bus. After a few minutes' ride she arrived at the Town hall where she worked.
Looking beautiful as usual she walks in with a fake smile to hide her emotions and look sweet. "If this Job doesn't take my life I will be the most grateful person on earth" Saying this in her head she hurries to her cubicle to get her computer ready for work.
After she had settled in she started to pack her bag, and that was when it dawned on her that she had forgotten something.
"Damn it"! She cussed in anger startling everyone in the office.
"What's wrong"? One of her colleagues asked her, looking at her curiously.
"Never mind, I am so sorry" she apologized immediately realizing that she had distracted everybody in the office.
"What do I do now? I am surely doomed". She asked herself not wanting to draw more attention to herself. Tapping her foot uncontrollably she waits for the worst to happen not knowing what else to do.
After what seemed like forever her doom arrived barking like a mad dog. Working at the town hall for three years after she graduated from college because she couldn't find work was a horrible experience for Jane. During the past years, she has been insulted, pushed, slapped, glared at, and even had her neatly packed brown hair pulled to a bleeding point. "God save me" Jane made a quick prayer silently hoping to escape her client's wrath. Confidently Jane stands up from her seat placing a sweet smile on her face as she tries to calm her angry client. "Good morning Mrs Veronica please have a seat while I attend to you immediately"! Saying this Mrs Veronica stopped her loud barking and proceeded to sit down while glaring at Jane.
"Madame, what was your case again? Jane asks waiting for the war to begin again because the woman had already submitted her complaint file yesterday and that was the same file she didn't study and at the same time is lying in her drawer.
With her chest beating loudly the woman replied with anger "What did you just say"?
The woman throws her bag away on the floor standing up, she rushes to grab Jane but missing a footstep she misses Jane who dodges her fierce-looking fingernails, and with a loud thump she falls on her butt. In pain, the woman cries out accusing Jane of pushing her.
That was when the manager rushed out to calm the woman as she was threatening to sue Jane for assault and attempted murder. Jane insisted on checking the CCtvs while still maintaining that she didn't touch the woman. Jack, her boss intervening, asked Jane to apologize very quickly to the woman by kneeling.
Jane, surprised by her boss taking the woman's side, blatantly refuses as she tries to prove her innocence. Seeing that her boss was not giving up she reluctantly kneels and offers her words of apology as she didn't want to lose her only job just yet.
The woman beaming with a smile said to Jane while she was still kneeling ''Next time you know your limits poor street rat''!.
This angered Jane. She stood up and slapped the woman so hard that she lost count of how many stars she saw in the broad daylight.
After a few minutes of silence, Jane's action left everybody shocked. The woman recovered from the slap with a reddened sore cheek dumbfounded at the same time. Jane proceeded to walk towards her while Mrs Veronica cowered in fear and made a few steps back covering her cheek.
"Next time you speak when you are spoken to"! Making this statement with an angered tone Jane headed towards her boss who was still in shock at the turnaround of the event and shook in fear not knowing what Jane could do to him.
"Mr Jack, I am done with this job I am resigning" Saying this Jane packed her bags and with the beep of her phone her salary alert for the month came in as it was the last day of the month. One thing Jane loved about working at the town hall was the automatic payment she received at the end of the month.
While everybody was still standing in shock with mouths open she picked up her bag and with a huge smile she looked at everybody raising her phone she said "A win is a win".
Jane immediately walked out to the entrance before anybody tried calling her back or drops of tears started falling.
Immediately she left the town hall tears started rolling down ruining her little makeup.
I just lost my job'' Jane mutters to herself while dabbing her face to dry up the tears without totally ruining her makeup. Back at the office, they all start regaining themselves. Everybody starts walking back to their cubicles while their boss goes back to the office not believing what he had just witnessed.
The woman silently left with her bag still holding her cheek where she had been slapped. And just like that the tough case was closed and the woman left for the day.
The news of what Jane did spread across the whole department in the town hall leaving some of them congratulating Jane while some criticized her.
Jane's only friend was the only person who stopped by her house at the end of the day to check up on her. Jane slept off after crying for some hours at home after she resigned earlier in the day as she had lost her only hope of getting some money. It was 6:30 p.m., and Jane woke up from the loud knock on her door.
"Who is it? Jane asks before opening her door as she is a little bit scared because of what happened earlier.
Recognizing the voice of May, her only friend at the town hall. She quickly wiped her face and dressed in her room before proceeding to open the door.
"Hey! What took you so long"? May asked while walking in with a smile to brighten the whole mood at least. Locking the door behind her she replied "I was running my bath before you came in''?
Trying as much as possible to hide her sad feeling which was impossible as she broke down in tears again. May hurriedly hugged her friend and tapped her back in consolation. "Today has been a very long day for us so let's drink it out for a better tomorrow"! Jane stops crying immediately raising her head confused at her friend's words. "May you know I don't like drinking so what do you mean by those words"? Waiting for her friend to explain what she meant.
"Jane, I resigned too after I got my payment. I am solely tired of working at the miserable town hall so we both lost our job" Saying this May breaks down sobbing and Jane starts to console her asking if she did it because of her.
May continues saying she has been enduring her stay waiting for the right moment to make her move of resignation.
"Ok let's drink till we daybreak"! After saying this the two friends freshened up and ordered alcoholic drinks so much that the delivery man got worried when he found out that it was just for two girls. The two girls drank till they got wasted for the night and they dozed off on the floor with a bottle of drink in their hands each.
