This was because all the mana in the surroundings was compressed into the mana crystals embedded in the walls.
There were two ways to create mana crystals: one was to slowly condense a wizard's mana using a complicated method, and the other was through natural formation in these mines, where the mana was compressed and naturally formed into crystals.
In this process, all the mana was absorbed into the crystals, causing the surrounding area to thin out. The older the mine, the more mana was compressed.
