Chapter 35: I Prefer Not To Confront My Problems, Thanks

“AJ.” I heard a voice say. I opened my eyes hesitantly, drearily. But no one was there. It took me another moment to recognize that nothing was anywhere at all.

All too quickly the memory of last night flew into my mind. I liked the good parts of it, like when Maxx held me, or looked at me like I was king of the world. But I had to face the bad parts, too, like the memory of Maxx’s face when he’d been ordered to kill me. Or the knowledge that I had locked Luna out of her own domain.

… yeah. Waking up wasn’t exactly something I had interest in doing.

I’d just as soon hope to never wake up again. Rejection was no simple thing to handle, not for any shifter. And somehow it felt like it was all my fault. Mind control be damned, Maxx didn’t want to be with me. Not to mention that my guiding wolf spirit, Luna, didn’t want to be with me either.

I was on one heck of a winning streak, that was for sure.
