"I do not know you," Vol said. "The System was right – you're a tool, Penelope, a mere bit of armour for my heart. If you want something from me, then you had better be cunning about it. If you don't like that, then that's unfortunate. You should have been stronger."

She could say nothing to that. It wasn't even a declaration of friendship. It was an order from a tyrant, something that Vol was finally able to let completely loose, now that he had a shackle for his humanity to cling to.

The robed figures came again. Even with one shoulder occupied by Penelope, he was able to keep his shield high enough to keep them back. He dealt with them with impossible ease. The girl offered hardly any weight for him. His movements were just as swift as before, without her there… No. He was swifter.
