Chapter 36 She felt helpless.....

Zoe tossed and turned in her bed for ages, unable to fall asleep. Martin’s strange reaction—or lack of reaction—bothered her more than it should have. Out of all the possible reactions, she hadn’t expected that Martin would just go for a walk.

God, it was so pathetic. Had she really hoped Martin would forbid her from leaving? Seriously?

Zoe sighed into her pillow, hugging it. It really was pathetic. She couldn’t even fall asleep anymore without Martin’s body wrapped around her.  

A sound made her eyes snap open.

She  turned her head toward the door. She was pretty sure she could hear voices—distant, but frantic voices. Who could it possibly be? It was the middle of the night. Martin still hadn’t returned, as far as she knew.  

Frowning, she slipped out of the bed and opened the door.
