Chapter 69: The Summoning from the Heavens
"Miss Fina, please wait here for a moment."
Having made his decision, Alex immediately stood up and turned to the young priestess beside him.
"Huh? Of course, no problem... But Alex, what are you planning to do?"
"I'm going to see if I can break through these barriers."
"Huh?"
Fina was taken aback by Alex's response. Along the way, she had already noticed that this young man knew next to nothing about magic, so why was he now thinking about breaking through barriers?
"It's like this."
Considering what he was about to do, Alex thought for a moment and organized his thoughts before speaking again.
"I have a unique ability that allows me to communicate with and summon beings from other worlds. Right now, I have this power at my disposal, so perhaps I can summon someone to solve these problems."
Of course, Alex didn't make any promises. While theoretically, summoning an angel would be much more reassuring than summoning a demon, given his last three disastrously troublesome summoning results, Alex couldn't help but be cautious. The last time, summoning that Little Horse wasn't too bad, but if he summoned someone like Yzru this time, it would be impossible to explain.
So, to be safe, Alex planned to secretly summon on the side first, to figure out who or what he summoned. If it was a being that could be presented, he would bring it out; if not, he would dismiss it.
Hearing Alex's explanation, Fina showed a surprised expression.
"Mr. Alex, you're actually a summoner?"
"It's just a capability I have, not necessarily one that will succeed."
Alex certainly wouldn't admit that he was a summoner... although he did indeed seem like one.
"But please be careful, summoning beings from other worlds is extremely dangerous. If you summon something dangerous…"
"Don't worry, I know what I'm doing."
Alex understood what Fina was concerned about, but he wasn't overly worried. Even though he didn't know what he could summon, he had designed the system himself. Although it wasn't fully complete, he had considered most aspects. The missing parts were just details... and now that the "Map of Myriad Dimensions" had automatically filled in those details, he had no choice but to use it.
After reassuring Fina, Alex turned and walked behind a large boulder nearby. He reached out his hand, and soon, the Map of Myriad Dimensions appeared in his grasp again, automatically opening. The thick pages slowly turned before stopping.
"Is this the place?"
Looking at the hexagonal copper frame on the page in front of him, Alex nodded. The summoning binding required this method to bind the Summoning Soul Stone, and initially, only one binding space was available. If players wanted to unlock more, they would need to spend money. According to the design, players could summon up to ten souls simultaneously. Of course… the amount of money required would not be small.
But for Alex, this was sufficient for now.
With that thought in mind, he raised his right hand and made a grasping motion in the air. Soon, a silver-level Summoning Soul Stone appeared between his fingers. He held the Soul Stone up, squinting as he carefully examined it.
But he found nothing. In Alex's eyes, the Soul Stone contained no information.
This was to be expected because when Alex was designing the system, the true nature of the Summoning Soul Stone would only be revealed after the summoning was complete. Moreover, at first, players knew very little about the souls they summoned. It was only through fighting alongside them, raising their affection, and gradually deepening their understanding that players could unlock the powerful hidden abilities of these souls.
The only thing that gave Alex some relief was that if he remembered correctly, he had requested the design team to ensure that 90% of the souls were set to be cute girls.
Why, you ask?
Is that even a question? Without virtual waifus, who's going to pay for the in-game purchases?
Now, he could only hope that this world was consistent with his design and that what he summoned would indeed be a cute girl… Of course, it would be even better if he could bring her out!
With that thought, Alex silently prayed while placing the Summoning Soul Stone into the recess on the book's page.
Click.
With a soft sound, the Map of Myriad Dimensions closed itself again after the Soul Stone was inserted, then began spinning rapidly. Soon, Alex saw a dazzling orb of light streak across the sky like a meteor, descending from the heavens and landing on the Map of Myriad Dimensions.
Boom!
With a low rumble, a violent gust of wind exploded outward from the orb of light, so powerful that Alex had to turn his head and raise his hand to shield his face from the flying dust and debris.
After a moment, the violent air currents gradually calmed down. Alex finally turned his head to look ahead, and his eyes widened in surprise.
Standing before him was a girl who appeared to be only thirteen or fourteen years old. She had long, sky-blue hair tied into twin tails that hung down her sides. Her porcelain-like skin, adorable cheeks, sapphire blue eyes, and delicate features made her look as cute as a doll.
She was dressed in a white outfit with black edges that resembled a super short dress, paired with white long boots and black garter stockings. A white cloak was draped over her shoulders.
However, what intrigued Alex the most were her ears and the large, dark collar around her neck. Her ears weren't shaped like a human's; instead, two long, white, rectangular objects extended from her hair, resembling some sort of high-tech equipment.
The enormous collar around the girl's neck was even more shocking. It was so large that it nearly enveloped her chin. From the outside, it seemed to be an ordinary metal collar, but combined with the chains attached to it, it gave off an unsettling vibe.
Additionally, a pair of transparent, beautiful wings that shimmered with a rainbow of colors fluttered gently behind the girl. She silently gazed at Alex and then spoke.
"Electronic Warfare Universal Angel, TYPE β, Ikaros, reporting for duty. Please issue your orders, Master."
"Uh..."
Staring at the petite, adorable girl before him, Alex was momentarily speechless, unsure of what to say. Although he had mentally prepared himself for the possibility that he might not summon a typical angel, the appearance of this girl left him at a loss for words.
Electronic Warfare Universal Angel?
What kind of nonsense is this?
And that "TYPE β"—why does it sound like a robot model? Wait, her ears also look like machines? Could it be that I summoned an artificially created angel? Is that even allowed?
…Well, an artificial angel is still an angel, so I guess there's no issue!
Thanks to his previous experience with Little Horse, Alex quickly regained his composure. He internally cursed his system for its absurdity, then smiled slightly and looked at the girl.
"Hello, Ikaros. My name is Alex. I hope you can fight alongside me..."
"No, it is my duty, Master."
But before Alex could finish speaking, Ikaros interrupted him, looking anxious.
"As long as you need it, I'm willing to do anything!"
"Uh..."
Watching Ikaros, Alex was again at a loss for words. Although she referred to herself as an Electronic Warfare Universal Angel, she was still an angel, and one that called herself "universal" no less.
Why did she seem so subservient? With this thought, Alex decided to ask about something else that had piqued his curiosity.
"By the way, what's with that collar around your neck?"
"Ah, this?"
For some reason, when Alex mentioned the collar, Ikaros's face lit up with a slight smile.
"This is the mark of my belonging to you, Master... Please observe, Master..."
As she spoke, Ikaros grasped the piece of chain hanging from her collar. To Alex's astonishment, the chain's lower half suddenly materialized out of thin air, extending and wrapping around his hand!
"Through this chain, you can issue commands to me anytime, anywhere, and you can also track my movements. That is the purpose of this collar."
Wait, this doesn't seem right!
Looking at the girl happily explaining the collar's functions, Alex was dumbfounded. Even if she wasn't human, she was still an angel. Why did it feel like he had just adopted a pet?
And what's with this collar and chain setup? What kind of twisted logic is this? Is this really treating someone as a pet? And she seems oddly proud of it?
Wait, something must be wrong here, right?
Is the problem with me, or with the world?
"Excuse me, Ikaros..."
Alex shook his head, helplessly raising his hand to interrupt the girl. Then, he pointed to the collar around her neck.
"Um... can you take off the collar? I feel like it's not quite right..."
"Remove the collar?!!"
Before Alex could finish his sentence, Ikaros's face turned deathly pale. She suddenly knelt on the ground, looking up at Alex with a frightened expression. It was as if Alex had just said something utterly unforgivable.
"M-Master! Please don't do that! Please don't abandon me! I'm willing to do anything, just please don't do this..."
"Uh..."
Seeing the girl staring at him with tearful eyes, Alex felt completely lost.
What on earth is going on here!?
