The Banquet

It's the day of the banquet, the weekend having arrived. Kate, Merig, Ashley, and Larry all prepare for the event. They volunteer to set up the dining hall at Rath Castle. They set up all the decor, dining tables, and seats. Kate helps the chefs in the royal kitchen prepare all the food with her cooking skills. Ashley lends her decorating skills, while Merig and Larry set up the dining furniture. The banquet hall is ready, and the group heads back to their homes to get ready in their banquet attire. Merig decides to wear a dress shirt, vest, tie, and dress pants, the same outfit he wore on his date with Kate. Kate dresses up in a beautiful green long tent dress with short sleeves, adorned with a thin brown kimono-style wrap and flat shoes, along with the necklace Merig gave her and feather earrings. Ashley puts on a beautiful red evening gown, some light jewelry, and heels. Larry is looking pretty snazzy in a dress shirt, tie, suspenders, and dress pants. It's time to head to the banquet hall. Merig and Kate leave to make their way to the castle gates. Kate clings to Merig's arm as they walk.

(K)I'm really excited to go to the banquet again.

(M)Me too, and this time we're going as a couple. That's even more exciting.

(K)[smiles] I know, that's the best part. A lot of the city knows we're together, so we'll be able to show each other off.

(M)Do you really want to show me off to people?

(K)Of course I do, why not?

(M)You're not embarrassed to be seen with me?

(K)Of course not, Merig. Why would you think that I would? I have no reason to be embarrassed. I want everyone to know that I'm with you and that I love you. And look at you, you're the most handsome goblin in Tara.

(M)I want everyone to know I'm with you, too. I guess I'm just still getting used to things. I want to show everyone at the banquet, and I want the entire world to see how much I love you, Kate, and that I'm with the most beautiful human in the world.

(K)[smiles] Then let's do it. Like I said, a lot of the people in this city already know I'm with you and you can show me off, too.

(M)That's true, I'll very much enjoy showing you off.

(K)Good, so will I, and I'll be anything but embarrassed to be seen with you. I'm more proud than anything because I love you, Merig.

(M)[smiles] I love you, too, Kate.

They turn to look at each other and share a smile. Kate lets go of Merig's arm, takes both her hands, and gently grabs his hand to hold. She rests her head on his arm as they continue walking in comfortable silence. After a few moments, Kate raises her head and sees Merig with an anxious look on his face. He subtly checks their surroundings.

(K)Still worried about everything? The situation with the bandits, I mean.

(M)A little. So far, we haven't seen or heard anything from them since that day we went out on patrol. They seem to have just disappeared, but we still make an effort to ensure the safety of the city.

(K)I understand, to tell you the truth, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little scared when you're not around. When you're not around, I feel much safer hanging out at the pub, especially when Ashley is there. And I feel even safer when you and I are together at your place, especially when you're holding me. But I can understand why you're still paranoid and still go out on patrol.

(M)I know what these bandits are capable of, so I'd rather be safe than sorry. We have pretty heavy security throughout the city, so it'll take a lot if these bandits want to get in here. They can be sneaky, so we have guards hiding in wait in case one decides to try to infiltrate without being noticed.

(K)So just have faith in the guards. They know what they're doing. Let's just enjoy tonight and leave our worries at the gate, okay, my love?

(M)Okay sweetheart, as long as I get to dance with you, my worries will melt away.

(K)Mine will, too, plus, I'm sure Larry and Ash have already arrived and are probably waiting for us, so it's best not to keep those two waiting. You know how Ash is when she gets the opportunity to reserve our table.

(M)Yeah, she's something else, she and Larry were always the early birds.

(K)Let's hurry before Ash blows a gasket.

Merig and Kate weave through the crowd, their eyes scanning for Ashley and Larry. Just as Kate and Merig predicted, they spot Ashley and Larry waiting by the castle gates, looking around impatiently. Ashley sees them and impatiently waves them over, while Larry stands beside her.

(A)Hey you two, over here! Where have you been? We're going to be late.

(K)Ash, relax, we're not going to be late, there are a lot of people still filing in.

(A)Yeah, but I reserved a table while we were setting up earlier, and I don't want anyone stealing it.

(K)Of course, you did, Ash, don't worry, no one is going to steal it if it's reserved.

(A)Hey, you never know, people can get crazy and I'd have to deal with table thieves.

(K)Oh, Ash, you say that every time we come here. The only one going crazy is you.

(A)[gasp] I'm offended.

(L)I'm glad you two showed up. You look great.

(M)Thanks, buddy, you both look great too.

(K)Alright, let's go in and dance till our feet fall off.

(L)Sounds like a plan.

(M)I'm ready to go in, you lead the way, Ash.

(A)Alright come on, I don't want to lose our seats!

(K)Alright, alright, we're coming. Come on, let's go before she explodes.

(L)Anything but that.

Ashley grabs Larry's hand and pulls him behind her, both rushing through the castle gates. Kate and Merig follow eagerly, entering the castle with excitement. They sprint down the long path, finally reaching the grand doors of the dining hall. Music spills out, beckoning them in. As the group enters, they gaze around the familiar space, a wave of nostalgia washing over them. Ashley, already restless, hustles them forward, determined to reach their seats.

(A)Alright, enough gawking. Follow me to the table.

(K)Alright, Ash, don't get your bloomers in a wad.

(L)[sigh] I don't know what I'm going to do with her.

(K)You just have to love her, Larry, that's all you can do.

(L)Oh trust me, I do, even when she's like this. I knew what I was getting myself into, but it was more than worth it.

(M)Let's go sit down before she has a hissy fit.

The three nod in agreement, rolling their eyes at the dreaded thought, before following Ashley to the table she reserved for them. They arrive at their table and settle into their seats, the ambiance warm and inviting. As they sit, their conversation flows naturally, punctuated by laughter. They reminisce about previous banquets they've attended, sharing stories and fond memories, the evening filled with camaraderie and joy.

(A)Do you guys remember Kate's first banquet?

(K)Oh geez, let's not remember that, I'm still trying to forget.

(A)Oh, come on, it was so funny. You're lucky Merig stepped in and offered to be your dance partner.

(M)Yeah, that was a lot of fun, though. It was the first time Kate, and I danced and luckily she caught on pretty quickly.

(K)I swear I knew how to dance before I got to Tara. I was just a little rusty, okay? It was so long ago since I danced before then, even the day I got here on my birthday, I decided to sit at the table while everyone else danced.

(M)Yeah, I remember that. You were very apprehensive when I offered to dance with you. I understood why when we first brought you here.

(K)I was so embarrassed, I almost died.

(L)Hey don't feel too bad. When I first started attending these, Ashley had to teach me how to dance because I was terrible. It was kind of embarrassing, but I wouldn't have learned if it wasn't for her. Ever since then, I've been able to charm her on the dancefloor…well at least I tried.

(A)Oh trust me, you succeeded. I just never told you.

(L)Then let's dance like old times and I can charm you some more. What do you say?

(A)[smiles] Alright, let's see if you still got it. Swoon me, oh charming dance partner.

(L)Well, I hate to leave you two, but I got a hot date with this beautiful woman and the dance floor.

(K)You two go and have some fun. We'll catch up.

Merig and Kate smile and share a soft laugh as Larry rises to his feet. He extends his arm, offering his hand to Ashley. Her smile widens as a blush creeps across her cheeks. She gently takes his hand and stands gracefully from her seat. Larry leads Ashley to the open dance floor, where they begin to dance together. Moments after they leave the table, Merig extends his hand to Kate. Her gaze flits from his hand to his face, meeting his soft smile.

(M)Shall we?

(K)[smiles] We shall.

Kate takes Merig's hand and stands up, allowing him to gently lead her to the open dancefloor. They arrive and stop, where Merig stands in front of Kate and gives her a light bow. Straightening up, he takes Kate's hand, gently raising it closer to his face and placing a soft kiss on it, eliciting a bashful smile from Kate. Merig then places his hand on her waist, and they assume their dancing positions as he begins to lead their dance. The group spends some time enjoying dancing together with their respective partners. After a few dances, they decide to return to their assigned table, settling down for a short rest after their enjoyable time on the dancefloor.

(A)Damn, it's been a hot minute since I danced that much.

(L)Same, but it was completely worth it. It's good to know I still got it.

(K)And we haven't danced that much since our date, my love, and we were on the ground this time.

(M)I think dancing in the air is less of a burden on your feet than on this hard marble flooring.

(K)Agreed, my feet need a break, too. Good thing I didn't wear heels, unlike Ash, over here.

(A)Hey, I like these heels, I can get past the blisters. But my feet do hurt.

(K)I always told you it would be better to wear flatter shoes. You always used to complain about your feet after only a few dances.

(A)Hey, these heels are perfect for dancing.

(K)Clearly, since you're already complaining about your feet hurting. Besides, I'm sure you remember that one…accident last year.

(A)…I thought you forgot about that.

(K)How could I forget? You told me you'd stop wearing heels to the banquet after that. And since you wanted to bring up some of my past embarrassments, consider this payback.

(L)What are we talking about?

(M)Yeah, I'm completely lost.

(K)You guys remember, Ash and I were dancing together, and we got a little carried away in the crowd with other people dancing around us. It was a fast-paced song, so we got lost in the music. Next thing you know, Ash's heels got caught on her dress and she slipped. I grabbed onto her to attempt to stop her from falling, but we both ended up going down and we hit the floor pretty hard.

(A)It was so embarrassing, I considered not coming to the banquet for a while after that. Some people around the city saw it and they didn't let me live it down. I sprained my ankle pretty badly, which was the worst part.

(L)Oh yeah, now I remember, Merig and I helped you two up off the ground. I had to carry Ash back to our table and luckily Merig had bandages on him, so I wrapped up her foot and ankle.

(M)Oh yeah, I remember Kate hurt her hand when she tried to save Ash from falling. I remember Kate was trying so hard to hold back tears when I put ice on it. It was hard to dance with her after that since I'd bandaged her hand up, so she had to sit back at the table and miss out on the rest of the banquet. I felt really bad, so I sat with her until we went home.

(K)Yeah, I felt bad cause you missed out on dancing for the rest of the night. I didn't want you guys to see me cry. But it was so embarrassing. I'll agree with Ash on that.

(M)I didn't mind sitting with you since you were still technically my dance partner. So I didn't miss out on much since I wouldn't have been able to dance with you, anyway.

(K)[smiles] True, I guess you have a point.

(A)But hey, I'll always remember that even though I don't want to.

(K)Me too, had I known you were gonna wear heels tonight, I would've stopped you.

(A)I guess I don't learn, do I?

(K)Well, luckily for you, I brought an extra pair of my flats just in case.

Kate grabs her bag and dives in, her search rewarded as she pulls out a pair of flat shoes. She extends them to Ashley with a sympathetic smile. Ashley gratefully takes the flats, a smile gracing her lips. She bends down, peeling off her high heels and slipping on the more comfortable shoes from Kate.

(A)[sigh] You're a lifesaver, Kate. I swear I think everyone needs a Kate in their life.

(K)I don't know about that, but it's a good thing we wear the same size in shoes, isn't it?.

(M)But she's right, you know. I mean, what on earth would we do without you, Kate?

(L)I second that, you're practically a saint.

(K)Aww, don't make me cry. You all know I don't like crying in front of you. Besides, I don't know what I would do without either of you, so we're even.

As the four continue talking and laughing, a familiar cloaked figure lurks near a pillar in the dining hall. It's Barth. He ducks behind the pillar and removes the gray cloak, revealing a blue mask still covering his nose and mouth. Now uncloaked, his appearance becomes clear. Barth, a goblin with light brownish-gray skin similar to Merig's, is dressed in formal attire. A dress shirt with rolled-up sleeves and dress pants. He emerges from hiding and sits at an empty table by himself, glancing occasionally towards the group at their table, still deep in conversation.

(A)Oh! I talked to the band while I was setting up here at the dining hall. They're gonna be playing a song that I think you're gonna like, Kate.

(K)Oh yeah?…Wait, is it the song I'm thinking of? The one I used to dance to?

(A)Yup, I figured you would remember. I chose this table so we would be close enough to see you. So you'd better get up there and get ready.

(K)Oh my god, I'm so excited, It's been so long! I shall return.

The excitement is bubbling over for Kate. She can't stay seated any longer, so she leaps up and rushes towards the band. She waits patiently for her cue, the group watching her with anticipation from their nearby table. The current song finishes and soft music fills the air as a spotlight illuminates Kate. Now in position, she begins a stunningly graceful dance. Her movements are like beautiful fairies, arms swaying to the melody and steps so poised and tranquil. This is a familiar sight for the others, who are captivated, especially Merig. He's completely enthralled by her fluidity, his worries and stress melting away as he watches. Ashley and Larry sway to the music, finding peace in the rhythm, and even Barth at his table seems mesmerized. The entire banquet hall is captivated by Kate's enchanting performance. As the dance progresses, Kate approaches the band, picks up a tambourine, and adds a gentle beat to the music. Finally, the dance reaches its conclusion. Kate dips into a graceful curtsy, the sound of thunderous applause filling the hall, Ashley, Larry, and Merig cheering the loudest. With a final bow, Kate steps out of the spotlight and rejoins the group at their table, leaving them all in awe of her talent.

(A)That was an amazing performance, as usual, Kate!

(K)Do you think so? I might have been a bit rusty since I last danced like that.

(L)Nonsense, it was absolutely flawless from what we saw.

(M)You were so beautiful up there. It was perfect and I couldn't keep my eyes off of you.

(K)You're all way too kind, but thank you.

(A)If you guys want, we can all go hang out at the pub after this like we used to do.

(L)Yeah, that sounds good to me.

(K)That's perfectly fine with me, I'm up for it.

(M)Absolutely, why not?

The conversation flows as the group rests at their table. They decide it's time to indulge in the delicious spread Kate helped prepare, happily digging into the food. Laughter and chatter fill the air as they enjoy the meal. Suddenly, Kate's gaze drifts away from the group. Her eyes land on Barth, who's observing them from a distance. The blue mask is unmistakable, and a puzzled frown creases her face. Startled by Kate's stare, Barth meets her gaze for a fleeting moment before looking away quickly. Kate's suspicion grows, but she masks it with a casual glance back at her friends, resuming the conversation. Just then, an upbeat song kicks in, the unmistakable twang of a fiddle cutting through the air. Recognition dawns on all four faces, and they break into excited smiles, sharing a silent moment of anticipation.

(K)[gasp] It's our favorite song!

(A)Well, it's a good thing I changed into these flats!

(L)Oh, this is going to be so much fun!

(M)This is the best song out of all of them, let's hurry!

A jolt of energy shoots through Kate. She springs from her chair and grabs Merig's hands just as he rises. They race for the dance floor, Ashley and Larry hot on their heels. Kate and Merig slide into position, ready to move. Merig takes the lead, guiding them through the fast-paced dance. The music thrums with energy, and they surrender to the joy of it all, lost in the rhythm. Ashley, liberated from her heels, throws herself into the dance with Larry. Together, they try to keep up with the whirlwind on the floor. As the dance progresses, the atmosphere becomes infectious. People around them switch partners, creating a sea of swirling bodies. The mood is pure joy. Merig and Kate join the mix, trading partners. Now Kate spins with Larry, while Ashley laughs as she twirls with Merig. Eventually, Kate finds herself swept into a dance with Ashley, their movements mirroring each other's. The fun continues as they switch partners again. But this time, Kate's eyes widen in surprise. Her new dance partner isn't who she expected. It's Barth. He stands before her, the blue mask a stark contrast to the joyous scene. A scowl darkens Kate's face. Seizing this unexpected opportunity, she decides to confront him. With a narrowed gaze, she opens her mouth to speak as they dance.

(K)Who are you? Are you here to hurt me? Do you work with those bandits?

(B)No, I'm not here to hurt you. I'm actually here to do the opposite. I've been watching to make sure that particular group of bandits don't hurt you.

(K)But why? Aren't you one of them?

(B)No, at least not anymore. Just trust me, okay?

(K)What's your name?

(B)My name is Barth.

(K)Okay, Barth, why should I trust you?

(B)It will all eventually make sense, I promise. Just know that I've been doing everything to prevent the bandits from coming into the city. So unless they do something to me, just know that you're safe, and please, don't tell Merig you saw me.

(K)I want answers. What exactly is going on?

(B)I know, and you'll get answers soon enough, Kate, don't worry.

(K)How do I know you're not the one that's out to hurt me?

(B)If I wanted to hurt you, I would've done it already. Besides, Merig would kill me if I did. He's not exactly pleasant when he's angry and when he's angry, he's out for blood. He'll protect you during the day and while you sleep, trust me. And if something happens to me and you don't see me again after this, we'll meet again. For now, let's enjoy the rest of the banquet.

Kate's initial skepticism towards Barth melts away. A quick internal debate assures her he poses no threat. The dance floor churns, partners shifting around them. Kate finds herself back in Merig's arms, his face alight with pure enjoyment. He's blissfully unaware of her encounter with Barth. Reassured, a smile blossoms on Kate's face. They lose themselves in the music, carefree and happy. The revelry continues until the banquet finally reaches its end. It's time to move on to the cozy pub, their usual haven. The four friends settle into their familiar table, ready to wind down after a joy-filled night.

(A)Holy shit, that was fun, but I'm so tired even after changing out of my heels.

(K)Me, too, my feet are killing me.

(L)Yeah, that was so much fun, and luckily no one fell and got hurt this time.

(A)Nope, and it was all thanks to Kate, she's a hero for bringing those shoes.

(M)Yeah, and I didn't think to bring first aid this time, so we would've been shit out of luck.

(K)It was not a problem at all, as long as the night was perfect and we had fun, that's all I wanted.

(M)Yeah, I had an amazing time like I always do. Oh hey, Kate, during that last dance, you disappeared for a bit. What happened? Were you okay?

Merig stares at Kate, concern etched on his face. Kate meets his gaze, a moment's hesitation flickering across her features. She's crafting a response in her mind, remembering Barth's plea for secrecy about their dancefloor encounter. A soft smile plays on her lips as a soft laugh escapes them, and she begins to answer Merig's question.

(K)I guess I just got lost in the crowd of people while dancing. I'm sorry if I worried you, my love.

(M)No need to apologize, I was a little worried about you. You had a different expression on your face than from before. You looked all happy, but then when you came back to me, you looked upset.

(K)I was just annoyed that I got lost from you, but I was much happier when I found you again.

(M)I understand, there's no need to worry, sweetheart. At least you found your way back to me and that's all that matters.

Smiles bloom on both their faces as Merig reaches out. His touch is gentle as he takes Kate's hand, lifting it to his lips for a soft kiss on the back of it. A blush creeps up Kate's neck as Merig leans in, their lips meeting in a kiss. She snuggles closer, finding comfort by resting her head on his shoulder. Her fingers tighten around his arm, seeking his hold as Merig returns the gesture, his hand finding hers to clasp.

(A)You two are so damn cute. Looking back on when Kate first got here, it made me realize that I made the right decision, coming here to Tara, and helping you move here, was the icing on the cake.

(K)[smiles] Aww, I'm the icing on your cake?

(A)[giggles] Of course you are, you're my best friend. We grew up together, so it was always a joy having you around. Especially when we got into trouble.

(K)[smiles] Do you remember the time we went into the forest in Taill? You convinced me to go with you after dark to test the spells my dad was teaching me at the time.

(A)Yes, I remember that! We got caught by the town druid. I was so terrified.

(K)Yeah, and you got so scared, you ran and left me behind. I was looking for you for what felt like an eternity.

(A)I felt so bad once I realized the druid wasn't coming after us, so I turned back to find you cause I realized you weren't following me. You were crying your eyes out by the time I found you.

(K)I was traumatized for weeks and I refused to leave the house with you and your shenanigans after that.

(A)Hey, I apologized at least a million times. I would even come to your house and bring you food that my mom cooked since you loved her food.

(K)Yeah, she's actually the one that taught me how to cook. That's why you all love my cooking as much as you do. I learned all my cooking skills from Ashley's mom.

(A)That's right, you did. But hey, your cooking turned out to be better than hers. Don't tell her I said that, though.

(K)Hey, there are better cooks out there than me. And your mom's cooking was just as good as mine.

(M)It sounds like you both had a fun time growing up together.

(K)Oh trust me, we did, and the good outweighed all the bad. All I had to do was talk to Ash, and I'd feel all better. It was like growing up with a sister since I'm an only child.

(A)I'm an only child as well, so it was nice to have someone to call my sister.

(K)Oh absolutely, we might as well be. Now, if you'll all excuse me, I need to use the ladies' room.

(A)Alright, we'll be here.

(L)Take your time.

(K)I'll be right back, my love.

(M)Okay, sweetheart, I love you.

(K)I love you, too.

Leaning in, Kate plants a kiss on Merig's lips before pushing herself up from the seat. He and the others continue their conversation as Kate excuses herself, heading towards the restroom. One patron at the bar tracks her movement, his gaze lingering as she passes. Moments later, Kate emerges from the restroom, ready to rejoin the group. But her path is cut off by the same man from the bar. He lurches to his feet, clearly worse for wear, effectively blocking her way. It's Jeff, a familiar and unwelcome face at the bar. Known for causing trouble, he'd recently wrangled his way back in after a temporary ban. His voice, thick with intoxication, slurs out as he addresses Kate.

(JE)Hey, Kate, how are you doing tonight?

(K)Hi, Jeff, I see Sherry let you back in again.

(JE)Yeah, she did. You wanna have some drinks with me to celebrate?

(K)No thank you, I'm heading back to my table.

(SH)You leave Kate alone, Jeff. She wants nothing to do with you.

(JE)Oh, come on, maybe I can take you out.

(K)No thank you, I just got back from the banquet. Besides, my ship has sailed since Merig and I are together.

(JE)What? So the rumors are true. You really are with that Commander Flynn, aren't you? That filthy Fomor and his filthy Fomor friend.

(K)Hey, those Fomors make sure you're able to sleep at night without worrying about bandits raiding the city!

(JE)So what? Forget about that disgusting goblin and come hang out with me.

(K)He's not disgusting. He's a better person than you, Jeff. You're horrible and people here can't stand you, especially when you're drunk.

(JE)Watch your mouth, you bitch.

(K)And what are you going to do, Jeff? You're so drunk, you can barely speak, let alone do anything to me.

Kate's steps falter as Jeff's face contorts into a snarl. Before she can react, he throws out a hand, grabbing her arm with a bruising grip. The commotion at the bar catches the attention of the others at the table. Heads swivel, eyes scanning the scene. Merig, positioned with a clear view of the bar, spots the interaction, and his expression darkens into a scowl. He watches, every muscle tense, as the situation unfolds.

(K)Hey, let go of my arm!

(SH)Let her go, Jeff. If you don't, there's no telling what Commander Flynn will do. He's very protective of that woman. You do anything to her and you're out of here for good.

(JE)Screw him. You should be with another human, not some Fomor. They're an abomination in this world. Come on, just one drink and maybe you can come back to my place.

(K)Not a chance, Jeff, and believe what you want. I love Merig and I want to be with him. He's more human than you.

(JE)You think a Fomor is better than me?

(K)Absolutely, he's a million times better than you'll ever be. Now let go of me.

Kate panics, and with a surge of adrenaline, she lashes out with her free hand, shoving against Jeff's chest. Drunk and off-balance, he stumbles back, crashing into the bar with a thud. His face contorts in rage, reddening as he pushes himself back to his feet and lunges forward toward Kate. He stands before her as his arm whips back over his shoulder. A loud smack echoes through the pub as his hand connects with the side of Kate's face. Her glasses fly off, clattering to the floor, as the impact sends her reeling. She stumbles back, hitting the wall with a gasp and clutching for support. The pub falls silent. Ashley and Larry's mouths agape, their eyes wide with horror. They glance at Merig, whose eyes are widened as his face contorts into a look of fury. His crimson eyes blaze, and with a snarl that sends shivers down their spines, he springs from his chair. He throws himself around the table, his long strides eating up the distance between him and the bar. Jeff, finally registering the commotion, turns to see Merig looming over him, a terrifying apparition of barely contained rage. He sputters a slurred insult, but the words die on his lips as Merig speaks. His voice, usually calm and collected, is now a low growl, laced with a dangerous edge.

(JE)Hey, Merig, your bitch over here was mouthing off to me! You should do something about her.

(M)No, Jeff, but I'll sure as hell do something about you.

Merig explodes into action. He lunges at Jeff, grabbing him by the collar with a snarl. Jeff's fist hangs suspended in mid-air as Merig slams a powerful punch into his face. Jeff reels back, crashing against the bar. Wasting no time, Merig snatches him up by the collar again, yanking Jeff close. They stand face-to-face, Jeff's eyes wide with terror as he stares into Merig's glowing crimson rage. Merig's voice erupts, a furious roar echoing in Jeff's face.

(M)WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, TOUCHING KATE LIKE THAT!? DON'T YOU EVER TOUCH HER AGAIN, YOU PIECE OF SHIT!

Terror etched on his face, Jeff tries to fight back, but it's a futile effort. Merig, in a surge of rage, grabs him and throws him with a sickening thud to the ground. Merig doesn't relent. He straddles Jeff's torso, a furious storm of punches raining down on his victim. Larry, witnessing the beatdown, reacts instantly. He springs from his seat, races over, and throws himself between them, wrestling Merig away. Just as Larry manages to haul him back, Merig unleashes one final, savage kick into Jeff's gut. Fury still contorts Merig's face as Larry struggles to restrain him.

(L)Merig, you have to calm down. I think he's learned his lesson. You're gonna kill him if you keep going.

(M)Good, he belongs in the underworld and he can rot there!

Kate flinches at Merig's roar. Her gaze darts towards him, taking in his explosive anger. With a shaky breath, she pushes herself away from the wall, rising to her feet. Kneeling down, she fumbles for her glasses, the world blurry without them. After a moment, she slips them back on, her vision sharpening just in time to see her path toward Merig. Determined to calm the raging storm, she walks towards him, her voice a soft, pleading whisper as she reaches him.

(K)Merig, please calm down, he's not worth it.

The fury in Merig's eyes catches Kate's attention. She flinches, her initial determined stride faltering as she witnesses the raw rage. Merig, held back by Larry, swivels towards her, the crimson burning with a terrifying intensity in his gaze. But then, he sees the stark fear reflected in Kate's eyes. The shift is instantaneous. The crimson fades, replaced by a normal hue. Anger evaporates from his face, replaced by an apologetic expression. Kate notices the change, a small, relieved smile softening her features.

(M)Kate, I'm so sorry.

(K)Don't be, it's okay, my love.

(M)…Kate, your lip.

(L)Oh shit.

The sight of Kate brings Merig's focus snapping back. He sees her flinch, then notices blood and a fresh wound on Kate's lip, a stark reminder of Jeff's brutality. Fury surges back through him, reigniting the crimson glow in his eyes. Merig whips around, his gaze locking onto Jeff with renewed rage. He lets out a guttural growl and lunges forward, only to be met by Larry's firm grip. The attack is short-lived, but it ignites a spark in the pub. A few patrons, fueled by righteous anger, join Larry in restraining the seething Merig.

(L)Merig, No!

(M)YOU SON OF A BITCH! YOU LEFT A MARK ON HER!

(L)I know, pal, but Kate's right, he's not worth it. You've already given him a good beating. Just worry more about Kate. She's more important.

(K)Please stop this, my love.

Kate and Larry try to calm Merig's fury down once again. Merig throws a glance back at Kate before pausing to think. He briefly glares at Jeff with murderous intent, but then hesitates and takes a deep breath. Merig eventually relents as he starts to regain his composure. Larry keeps a watchful eye on Merig until he's calm again before Larry and the other patrons release him. Merig looks back at Kate, takes another deep breath, and composes himself with an apologetic expression. He then slowly approaches Kate to check on her injuries, extending his open hands with a gentle smile to show he isn't a threat. Though still a little frightened, Kate notices the shift in Merig's demeanor once more and steps forward to allow him to examine her. Merig carefully places his hands on her face, then leans closer for a better look. As he touches the cut on her lip, Kate winces in pain and flinches away.

(M)It's okay, sweetheart, I'm sorry. That's a nasty cut. Are you hurt anywhere else?

(K)No, my love, thankfully not.

(M)Does your lip hurt?

(K)It stings a little, but I promise I'm fine, Merig.

Merig soothes Kate's cheeks with his caress, his soft smile never leaving his face. She returns the gesture with a tentative smile of her own, finally believing he poses no harm. A groan escapes Jeff from the floor, catching Merig's attention. He throws Jeff a scowling glance as the man sprawls there. Sherry at the bar casts a disapproving shake of her head in Jeff's direction.

(SH)I warned you, Jeff, you never learn. I just let you back in here not even a couple of days ago.

(M)What do you want us to do with him, Sherry?

(SH)[sigh] Do as you see fit, Commander, just please get him out of here. You're banned for good, Jeff. I've given you more chances than you deserve. Putting your hands on Kate like that was the last straw. You good for nothing drunk!

(L)You heard the lady, Merig, let's get him out of here.

(M)[smiles] With pleasure…Kate, sweetheart, are you sure you're okay?

(K)Other than this split on my lip, I'm okay, I promise, my love.

(M)It's starting to bleed more. Go get it washed off while I take care of this, okay? I love you.

(K)Okay, I will, I love you, too.

The tension eases as a gentle smile blossoms on both Merig and Kate's faces. He leans in and deposits a soft kiss on her cheek, the tenderness a stark contrast to his earlier rage. His focus shifts to Jeff, who groans again from the floor. Merig strides towards him, a scowl replacing his brief affection. He and Larry join forces, hauling Jeff to his feet despite his battered state. Though conscious, Jeff's drunkenness makes him a deadweight. Together, Merig and Larry escort him toward the exit, their faces grim. Once outside, the hospitality ends abruptly. A shove from Merig and Larry sends Jeff sprawling onto the ground, his drunken stupor preventing any resistance. Merig crouches beside the fallen man, his voice hardening with anger and sternness as he addresses Jeff.

(M)Get the hell out of here if you know what's good for you. And if you ever come near Kate again, I'll do much worse than what I did in the pub, trust me.

(L)And you heard Sherry, she banned you for good. So if we hear about you causing trouble after this, we'll be here.

Jeff groans and with a sluggish effort, rolls onto his side. He props himself up weakly, blood and saliva pooling in his mouth. In a pathetic attempt at retaliation, he tries to spit the foul mixture at Merig, but fails miserably, the goo landing harmlessly at Merig's feet. Jeff glares up at both Merig and Larry, his face a bloody mess mirroring his belligerent scowl.

(JE)You filthy Fomors, you're lower than humans, you're beneath us!

(L)Technically, you're lower than us right now, lying there on the ground cause you're too drunk and beat up to stand on your own. Besides, we're Royal Guards, so you're literally the one beneath us.

(M)And you made the biggest mistake of your life tonight by putting your filthy hands on the woman I love. I could've done much worse if Larry here hadn't stepped in. But now it's time for you to leave, now get the hell out of here before I change my mind and finish beating you unconscious.

Disgusted, Merig rises from his crouch and towers over Jeff. He throws the man one last withering look before backing away. With a defiant grunt, Jeff pushes himself off the ground, his body protesting every movement. He stumbles off, a solitary, bruised figure disappearing into the night. Merig and Larry exchange a grim nod before turning and heading back inside. The warmth of the pub welcomes them as they return to the table. They find Ashley tending to Kate, a concerned frown creasing her brow as she gently dabs at the split lip with a damp cloth. Kate winces with each touch, the pain a stark reminder of the night's events.

(A)I'm sorry, Kate, that asshole hit you good. Just try your best to hold still, okay?

(K)Okay, it just stings, but it also kind of burns.

(A)That's probably from the swelling. You'll need to put some ice on it when you go back to Merig's place.

(M)No need to worry, I'll take care of it.

(A)At least I got the bleeding to stop. Damn, Merig, you beat the shit out of Jeff.

(L)He sure as hell did, and I had a hard time pulling Merig off of him. I was sure he was going to beat Jeff to death.

(M)I'm sorry, you guys, I don't know what came over me. As soon as he hit Kate, I was seeing red.

(K)It's okay, sweetheart, you have nothing to be sorry about.

Relief washes over Kate's face as she reaches out, offering her hand to Merig with a tentative smile. Merig sees the gesture, his earlier anger replaced by a deep frown and a pang of apology. He gently takes her hand in his, his touch soft as he caresses it. But the moment lingers, Merig's gaze dropping from her eyes to their intertwined hands, then down to the floor. His brow furrows, a new wave of emotion clouding his expression.

(M)I'm so sorry you had to witness that, Kate. I didn't mean to scare you if I did. That wasn't my intention.

(K)It's perfectly fine, my love, I completely understand. Although, I am tired after all of that.

(A)You guys should head home and get some rest, then.

(L)Agreed. I'm sure you're shaken up after what just happened, Kate.

(K)You're right, Larry, I am.

(M)Are you sure you're okay, sweetheart? I feel like a piece of shit.

The tentative smile on Kate's face strengthens as she rises from her seat, their hands still entwined. She steps closer, standing directly in front of Merig, and gazes up at him with unwavering warmth. He meets her gaze, his own unreadable. She reaches out, her touch gentle as she places her hands on either side of his face. In a soft voice, she speaks.

(K)I'm just fine, my love. As Larry said, I'm just shaken up from the whole thing, that's all, mostly from Jeff hitting me.

(M)I'm sorry he did that to you. I should've stepped in sooner.

(K)It's not your fault. None of us saw it coming. Let's just go back to your place, okay? I'm tired.

(M)Alright sweetheart, we'll leave.

(L)You two go home and get some sleep. Merig, you should take a day off tomorrow.

(M)No, I'll be up in the morning for patrol. I'm fine, I promise. I know my anger got the better of me and I'm sorry.

(L)Don't be, I completely understand. I would've done the same if it was Ash in that situation. I just figured you'd need a day to completely cool off. But if you're sure you're okay to go on patrol, I won't stop you.

(M)I should be fine, I'll be cooled down by the morning. Trust me, I'd like to find Jeff and finish him off, since I'm sure he's still stumbling home. But I need to get home and take care of Kate. You were right back there, Larry. She's my biggest priority right now.

(L)Alright, pal, I'll be taking Ash home. You two stay safe while walking back to your place.

(M)We will, you and Ash, stay safe, too. Again, I'm sorry about everything.

(A)Hey, you have nothing to be sorry about. You stepped in and protected our Kate from further harm. That's all that matters. You two go home and we'll see you later. I love you, Kate.

(K)I love you, too, Ash. We'll see you two later.

Bidding farewell to Larry, Ashley, and the concerned patrons, Merig and Kate weave their way out of the pub. Together they walk towards Merig's home, the night air a silent companion on their journey. Back at Merig's home, they stand in the bathroom adjoining his bedroom. Merig rummages through his first-aid kit, the clinking of supplies a quiet counterpoint to the earlier chaos. He selects a bottle of clear liquid, pours some onto a cotton ball, and turns to Kate. Gently, he dabs the cotton at her wound, her wince a flicker of pain against the backdrop of the settling night.

(M)I know it's stings, I'm sorry, sweetheart.

(K)It's fine, it's actually not too bad.

(M)Now please tell me the truth. Did I…scare you, back at the pub?

(K)[sigh] At first, but it was only because I saw how angry you were. I was worried you were angry at me, too, but then I realized it was Jeff that you were angry at. It was all just the shock from being hit by him, that's all. Seeing how angry you were, I was afraid you were going to…

Kate's words catch in her throat. A hesitant silence stretches between them, her gaze fixed on Merig. He sees the unspoken words hanging in the air, and a mortified flush creeps up his neck. Guilt crashes over him, his head dropping in shame for a fleeting moment. Then, with a newfound seriousness in his eyes, he reaches out. His hands frame her face gently, his voice softening but laced with sincerity as he begins to speak.

(M)You listen to me, Kate. I would lie down and die before ever putting my hands on you the way that Jeff did at the pub. I would never in a million years even contemplate hurting you, do you hear me?

(K)I know, Merig, I realized that and I'm sorry. I didn't want to say anything in front of Ash and Larry.

(M)I'm so sorry, Kate, I didn't mean to make you afraid of me. I was just so angry at Jeff, that I almost lost control. But I promise he was the only one I intended to hurt, no one else. When he hit you, I wanted to beat the life out of him. Please forgive me, Kate.

(K)There's nothing to forgive, Merig, because there's nothing to apologize for. I would've done the same if I were you. Like I said, I was afraid at first, but I'm fine now. I promise I'm not afraid of you, my love.

The tension dissipates as Kate smiles reassuringly at Merig, his hands lingering on her cheeks. His stern expression melts into a mirroring smile, and he leans in for a kiss. But Kate flinches, a wince escaping her lips as their skin meets. The split lip throbs in protest, pulling her back from the contact. Merig's apologetic words tumble out in a rush as he realizes his mistake.

(M)I'm so sorry, Kate, I'm such an idiot.

(K)It's fine, Merig, I wasn't thinking either. It's really starting to hurt, though.

(M)Hold on, I think I have something.

Kate's wince throws Merig off guard. He pulls away abruptly, excitement replacing his concern for a moment. He turns towards the medicine cabinet above the sink, practically bouncing on his toes. With a flourish, he throws the cabinet open and starts rummaging through it, a wide smile plastered on his face. After a few moments of clattering, he triumphantly pulls out a small red pouch and waves it at Kate, his enthusiasm bubbling over.

(M)I found it, I forgot I still had this! Do you know what this is?

(K)Pain killers?

(M)Even better, it's healing powder. It can make small wounds disappear.

(K)Perfect, good thing this is just a small wound, or we'd be in big trouble.

(M)Jeff would be the one in big trouble if it was a bigger wound, I promise you that. Alright, now I just have to put this on some cotton and apply it to your cut.

(K)Alright, that sounds easy enough. Hopefully, it doesn't sting.

(M)Trust me, it's painless. Here, I'll show you.

Merig opens the small pouch, revealing a powder inside. He deftly snatches a fresh piece of cotton and dips it into the pouch, coating a small section with the powder. Setting the pouch down, he turns to Kate, his touch gentle as he places a hand on her face, a soft smile playing on his lips. Merig then takes the cotton and carefully applies it to the cut on Kate's lip, his gaze fixed as he waits for the powder to work its magic. In a moment, he pulls the cotton away, watching in awe as the cut vanishes before his very eyes.

(M)[smiles] It's gone!

(K)You're right, that didn't hurt at all. And I don't feel the pain anymore.

(M)See for yourself.

Merig steps back as Kate reaches up to the mirror for a better look. Her smile widens into one of amazement as she sees the wound completely vanished. Merig tucks the pouch back into the medicine cupboard and discards the cotton. Kate reaches out to touch her lip, disbelief giving way to a joyful grin as she confirms the cut is truly gone. They lock eyes in the mirror, a shared smile of excitement passing between them.

(K)It really is gone, Merig, that's amazing!

(M)Yeah, I've had this stuff for a while, I guess I completely forgot about it. Nessa actually gave it to me when I was still training to become a Royal Guard. I knew I'd eventually put it to good use again. Good thing I remembered I still had it.

(K)Thank you, Merig. I don't know what I'd do without you around.

(M)[smiles] And I don't know what I'd do without you around, either. But one thing I do know is that I wanted to kiss you. And now that the cut on your lip is gone, we can continue where we left off.

(K)[smiles] You're absolutely right. Kiss me, my love.

Merig cups Kate's cheeks in his hands, his touch lingering. He brushes his fingers over her lip where the cut was only moments ago. Their eyes meet, a soft smile playing on both their lips. Merig leans in closer, and they share a gentle kiss, the world fading away around them. He pulls back eventually, but their gazes stay locked, conveying a deep connection. Finally, his eyes filled with tenderness, Merig speaks, his words revealing the depth of his feelings for Kate.

(M)Hey, Kate?

(K)Yes, my love, what is it?

(M)Can I ask you something important?

(K)Of course, ask me anything.

(M)Can I…make love to you? No pressure, of course, I can understand if…

(K)[smiles] Yes, Merig.

(M)…What?

(K)[smiles] I would love nothing more, than to make love with you, Merig.

(M)[smiles] Are you sure you're ready for something like that? Are you sure you don't want to think it over, first?

(K)Merig, when you confessed that you love me, I was ready to tell you that I felt the same. When you asked me out on our first date, I was ready to say yes and I had a wonderful time dancing in the sky with you. When you first kissed me, it was something I had hoped would happen, and I was ready for it. And when you asked me to be with you, I didn't hesitate because I was ready. I was ready for all of that because I love you and it's what I wanted, so I was more than ready for it. I'll admit, I had a feeling you'd eventually ask me this question and I am a bit nervous. But as long as it's with you, then I'm ready for anything.

(M)I understand, and I feel the same way. As long as I'm with you, nothing else matters. I love you so much and I'm ready, too.

(K)I love you, too, Merig. You've done so much for me and always go out of your way to make me happy. You've saved my life more than once, and you nearly beat the life out of a drunk asshole who decided he would try to force himself on me. I feel like I owe you a lot, even my life.

(M)Hey, you don't owe me a thing, nor do I expect anything in return. The love that you show me and give to me is more than I could ever ask for, and more than I think I deserve.

(K)You deserve all of my love, Merig, and I happily give it to you. And I'll happily and willingly give myself to you and make love with you.

(M)Don't make yourself feel obligated, cause you're not. But as long as it's willingly, then I'll gladly indulge.

(K)As long as it's you, Merig, I won't say no.

Merig and Kate continue to gaze into each other's eyes, sharing a smile before Merig leans in to kiss her. They gradually move from the bathroom to the bedroom, pausing just outside the bathroom as Merig presses Kate against the wall. After breaking apart from their kissing, they stare into each other's eyes once again. Merig's hands start to roam lower and he begins to undress Kate, lifting up her dress and eventually removing it completely while gazing at her body. Kate reciprocates by undressing Merig, their lips still connected as they softly touch each other's skin. Merig then pulls Kate away from the wall and turns her around as they make their way towards the bed, still locked in a passionate embrace. As they reach the bed, they pause for a moment to look at each other in admiration, illuminated by the faint light coming from the bathroom, along with the moonlight from the balcony doors. Kate slowly lays down in the middle of the bed, resting her head on the pillows. Merig smiles softly at her before joining her on the bed, crawling over to where she is lying. He sits on his knees between her legs and looks down at them before gently placing his hands on them and caressing them upwards. Kate lets out a soft sigh as Merig continues to run his hands up her body. He then moves onto the bed, with his hands on either side of Kate above her shoulders, as he hovers over her. Taking a moment to look into her eyes, Merig speaks softly before continuing their intimate encounter.

(M)[smiles] I love you, Kate, you're so beautiful.

(K)[smiles] I love you, too Merig. I'm ready for you to make love to me.

Merig gazes down at Kate's exposed body, his eyes taking in every curve and dip as he leans over her. His touch is tender and deliberate as his lips softly brush against her skin, igniting a fire within her that she can't contain. With closed eyes and soft sighs, she gives herself up to the pleasure he brings. Moments pass, and Merig continues to explore every inch of her body, leaving a trail of kisses in his wake until they are face to face once again. Their smiles mirror each other as Kate reaches up to gently caress Merig's cheek, their love radiating between them. As they continue to exchange kisses and caresses, their passion intensifies until they are lost in each other. The world fades away, and all that remains is the two of them, moving together in perfect harmony as Merig makes love to Kate. After what feels like an eternity of bliss, they finish and come back to reality, still intertwined and panting for breath. Their eyes meet, and they share a moment of quiet contentment before Merig lets out his familiar excited laugh, unable to contain his joy as he immediately covers his mouth to silence it. Kate's heart swells with happiness at the sound of his laughter, and she giggles along with him. Merig's cheeks flush with embarrassment at being caught off guard but quickly recovers with an apologetic look on his face. He uncovers his mouth and speaks with love in his voice.

(M)I'm so sorry, Kate, I had a feeling that would happen. At a time like this, it's even more embarrassing.

(K)Stop apologizing for it, Merig. I hope it never goes away. Besides, this is an exciting moment, so I expected it would happen.

The couple exchange a loving smile before Merig leans in for more gentle kisses. Time seems to stand still as minutes pass by, and they eventually find themselves dressed in comfortable sleepwear, snuggled together in bed. Merig holds Kate close, the joy in their hearts reflected in their adoring gazes at each other.

(K)We did it, Merig, we made love.

(M)Yeah, we did…But I do have one question.

(K)What is it, my love?

(M)I, uh…I didn't…hurt you at all, did I? You know…

(K)[giggles] Of course not, Merig. What made you think you did?

(M)[blushes] Just…some of the…noises you made…it made me worry a little, that's all. I didn't mean to hurt you if I did.

(K)I'll admit, it did hurt at first, but it stopped after a bit, so don't worry, that's completely normal. But other than that, no you didn't hurt me, my love, you did the complete opposite, actually. I would've had you stop if you did hurt me.

(M)I still feel bad…to tell you the truth, this was actually my first time. I was surprised I even knew what I was doing, or knew what to do.

(K)[giggles] There's nothing wrong with that. If the love between two people is strong enough, you don't have to be an expert. You'll just naturally know what to do, kind of like an instinct. But sadly, I can't say the same about it being my first time.

(M)That's okay, humans typically mate with other humans, so it's not very common that a human decides to mate with a Fomor, although it's not rare either. But none of that matters to me. I'm just glad my first time was with you. I'm still shocked that you even agreed to it.

(K)Of course, Merig, you do that kind of thing with someone you love the most, and I'm glad I could be your first.

(M)I'm very happy that you were my first, and I want you to be the only one that I make love to. Because I would only ever want to make love to you, Kate.

(K)And from here on out, I only want to make love with you, too.

Merig and Kate exchange a loving smile before Merig draws her closer and they share a tender kiss. As they break away, they gaze into each other's eyes, but Merig's smile suddenly fades, replaced by a frown. Kate quickly notices his change in expression and gently rests her hand on his cheek, softly stroking it as she speaks to him in a comforting tone.

(K)What's wrong, my love? What's on your mind?

(M)I'm just thinking about what Jeff said earlier, about how humans shouldn't be with Fomors. When we took him outside, he said Fomors were lower than humans.

(K)Well, he's wrong, Merig, don't let that get to you, okay? You and I are equals as far as I'm concerned, and I don't think of you as lower than myself. You're a wonderful person and you stole my heart.

(M)You're a wonderful person, too, Kate, and you stole my heart as well. You've been nothing but amazing to me and have always treated me with kindness. This entire time we've known each other, not once did you even care about the fact that I was a goblin. You treated me the same way you treated other humans as if I was a human, and it never made you feel uncomfortable that I was a goblin.

(K)That's right because I never cared about what you are and you never gave me a reason to feel negative about you or feel uncomfortable. I've always felt so safe around you and you've always been so kind and gentle, especially to me. I treat everyone the same way they treat me and how I would want to be treated.

(M)And that's what makes you so amazing, Kate, and again, I'm sorry about everything that happened earlier tonight. I was honestly convinced that you were going to hate me and maybe even leave me after you saw the way I reacted when Jeff hit you. I just got so angry at that asshole for what he did to you.

(K)Well, I don't hate you, Merig, and I have no intentions of ever leaving you. You're not the one who hit me and gave me that cut on my lip.

(M)And I have no intentions of ever doing anything like that to you. My hands are only meant to show you love and affection.

(K)I know, my love, I trust you. You've never given me a reason not to, or to think you would ever hurt me.

(M)I made the best decision of my life, making you the first and only person that I wanted to make love to. The only human I love and want to be with.

(K)[smiles] I made the best decision of my life, too, and made love with you, the only goblin that I love and want to be with. You may not be my first, but I want you to be my only. I just hope it was worth it for you. I know it was for me.

(M)Without a doubt in my mind, you are worth anything and everything to me, Kate. I don't even know how to explain how I feel after experiencing such a thing for the first time with you tonight. But what I do know is that I loved every second of it, and I only want to experience it with you for as long as we are together. Or until you get tired of me, of course.

(K)That's the thing. I'll never get tired of you, Merig. I absolutely loved every bit of this experience, too. It was such a wonderful feeling. A feeling that I haven't felt with anyone else. I too, want to experience it with you again, and again, and again. But for now, we should sleep. It's been a long night and I'm tired.

(M)I'll never get tired of you, either, and you're right, let's get some sleep.

(K)I'm ready to just fall asleep right here in your arms.

(M)Sounds good to me. I'm ready to hold you all night. I love you, Kate, sweet dreams.

(K)I love you, too, Merig, sweet dreams, my love.

Merig grabs the blanket and covers Kate, holding her tight and giving her one last goodnight kiss. They lie there, eyes locked, sharing a smile before eventually drifting off to sleep.
