Like where the owner was. And why nobody could locate her.

She bolted from the bedroom, ready to argue with Edmund to take her to the club. What she found was an empty apartment echoing back at her as she called out his name.

The kitchen was spotless, no sign of use anywhere to be seen. The same held for the living room, with his monitor black and the lights off on the hard drive. His keys were gone from the small basket he kept them in near the door. Since it was dark outside, it didn’t surprise her to realize he was gone, though why they would leave her alone after all their protestations about keeping an eye on her earlier, she had no idea.

That was when she noticed that the guest bedroom door was closed.

Darby only meant to double-check that she really was alone. If she was, that meant she could get out without any hassles. So sure of what she’d find—that the room would be empty—she didn’t even bother knocking first.
