“Don’t pay any attention to your second opinion of me,” Mathias said. “The first is always the right one.”

Darby stared at both of them for a long moment before shaking her head. “Two minutes,” she repeated. Pivoting on her heel, she marched out of the room, slamming the door shut behind her.

Edmund stared at the door, wondering where in hell everything had gone wrong. The last thing he had ever wanted was to hurt Darby or ruin the relationship that they had. He’d protected her for a year, making sure she was focused as she realized her dream, denying his own desire because he knew it wasn’t something she needed at that time. And now what? Because he hadn’t bothered to spill the details of his past, she was going to kick him to the curb?

“I honestly thought you two were at least shagging,” Mathias said.

He actually sounded apologetic, but Edmund didn’t want to hear it. “Come on,” he muttered. “We better get out of here. Darby doesn’t make threats. She makes promises.”
