Danzo didn't care how many people might die tonight; all he saw was an opportunity. After the death of Hiruzen, he had been the most likely candidate to become Hokage, only for Tsunade to take the position from him.
Now, with this crisis, he could claim that Tsunade had mishandled the situation, forcing her to step down. Ideally, Tsunade would die in the chaos, leaving no one to prevent him from taking control of Konoha.
The potential for disaster didn't concern him. He had a powerful group of Root ninjas at his disposal and believed his own strength was sufficient for self-preservation. Danzo's willingness to watch his fellow villagers die for his own gain showed him to be a true monster.
Meanwhile, everyone else was fighting desperately to survive, trying to escape the zombies, save others, and do whatever they could to help.
"Chidori!"
Sasuke unleashed Chidori, taking down several mutated, powerful zombies in one go. But the repeated use of his technique left him exhausted, and he collapsed to his knees, panting heavily.
"Sasuke!"
Sakura, seeing Sasuke's fatigue, rushed over to support him. Despite her fear, she had fought bravely to save people and assist Sasuke, killing a few zombies herself. But as a Genin, she was quickly reaching her limit.
"Idiot, just run."
Sasuke, struggling for breath, urged her to leave.
"I'm not running! I have to protect you—I can't just leave you here!"
Sakura, using all her strength, tried to help Sasuke to his feet.
"Fool."
Seeing how hard Sakura was trying for his sake, even the usually cold Sasuke couldn't help but feel moved.
"Ughh!"
Just then, a group of Blood Zombies approached, killing everything in their path and making Sasuke and Sakura their next targets.
"Sakura, run! These things are strong!"
Sasuke shouted, urging Sakura to flee. He had faced these Blood Zombies before, and only thanks to Kakashi's training had he managed to defeat them.
"I'm not leaving!"
But Sakura was stubborn and refused to abandon Sasuke.
"AAAAHHH!!"
The Blood Zombies roared and charged at Sasuke and Sakura, ready to attack.
Sasuke instinctively moved to push Sakura out of the way.
"Uzumaki Naruto Barrage!"
Naruto's voice rang out as over a dozen of his shadow clones appeared, kicking the Blood Zombies in the face and sending them flying, piling them up in a heap.
"Sasuke, Sakura, leave this to me! I'll show you how strong I've become!"
Naruto descended from the sky, two clones on either side of him, each helping him form a Rasengan.
"Double Rasengan!"
Naruto smashed the two Rasengan into the Blood Zombies, unleashing a powerful force that shattered their heads.
"Hehe! How's that? Pretty impressive, right?"
Naruto grinned at Sasuke and Sakura.
"Naruto, you're so strong!"
Sakura was in disbelief, unable to comprehend Naruto's newfound strength.
"How can you be this strong?!"
Sasuke was equally shocked, his eyes trembling as he stared at Naruto. Could this really be the same Naruto he knew, the one who was always last in everything?
"Hehe, a lot has happened to make me stronger. Anyway, you two should get to safety. Leave this to me!"
Naruto said confidently, giving them a thumbs-up before turning to face the approaching horde of zombies.
"Sasuke, let's go. Naruto, be careful!"
Sakura knew they were in no condition to help and decided to lead Sasuke away.
"Damn it, why? How did Naruto, who was always at the bottom, become so strong?"
Sasuke was lost in thought, his mind fixated on Naruto's sudden strength. Being surpassed by someone he had always considered inferior was something he couldn't accept.
If not for Sakura pulling him along, he might not have even been able to walk.
"You're jealous, aren't you? That's the power that boy has now. You'll never surpass him."
Orochimaru's voice suddenly whispered in Sasuke's ear, causing him to freeze and look around.
He then saw a nearby zombie with Orochimaru's face speaking to him.
"See these monsters? They're all my creations, though they're just failures, good only for causing chaos. But I possess the perfect virus, allowing for a new kind of evolution. Look over there."
Following Orochimaru's gaze, Sasuke saw Tsunade chasing Orochimaru across the rooftops.
Orochimaru's body moved like liquid, constantly shifting, splitting, and transforming to evade Tsunade's attacks. It was something beyond what any human should be capable of.
"I may no longer look human, but I've surpassed humanity, freed from its physical limitations, possessing power beyond your imagination. If you want to be as strong as I am, come find me."
With that, Orochimaru leapt farther away, the building beneath him collapsing under Tsunade's assault.
"Is this Orochimaru's power?"
Sasuke stared at the scene in disbelief, his lips trembling.
"Sasuke, what's wrong? Hurry up!"
Sakura kept urging him, and Sasuke finally snapped out of it, continuing to move forward without a word.
Meanwhile, Naruto had killed countless zombies, easily piercing their heads with kunai. But even he was beginning to tire.
"Damn these disgusting monsters."
Naruto grimaced at the zombies that kept coming, feeling the strain on his body.
"Still..."
Naruto glanced behind him at the villagers trapped under rubble, too injured to move, and his resolve hardened.
He had to keep fighting to protect them!
"Please, save me. I'm sorry I ever called you a demon fox."
One of the villagers, who had often insulted Naruto, was now injured and helpless, relying on the very boy he had scorned.
He was terrified that Naruto would leave him to die out of spite, so he desperately apologized.
"Don't worry, I'm going to be Hokage one day. There's no way I'd leave you behind!"
Naruto gave the villager a reassuring thumbs-up, then took a deep breath and focused, entering his inner world.
"Hey, Kurama, lend me your power!"
"You don't need my permission to use it anymore. So why ask?"
