Chapter 29
Ella opened the door to let Laura in and the two exchanged a warm hug, Ella pat Laura's back before letting her go and the both of them walk into her room
"Where is pumpkin?" Laura asked
"She is with my mom, she insist on staying there" Ella answered then served her some water
"Why did you call yesterday? I couldn't answer the call because I was busy"
"Its nothing, I just want to see a friend"
"huh that's sweet, so what's the real issue?" Laura laughed at words and push the cup of water further away from her
"I just felt bored yesterday being alone so I needed a friend that's all" Ella gives her a doubting look and took a drink for herself, she sat down next to Laura and place her hand on her shoulders gently
"Do you like Chris?" she suddenly asked
"What! No I don't" she said shocked that she could read that out about her. Ella shrugged and took a mouthful from her drink
"Then I guess you love him" she continued
"No what nonsense are you saying?" Laura couldn't believe her eyes, she never told Ella anything so how she figured out her feelings baffles her
"How can you fall for him so quickly? I thought you really loved Avan" Ella continued not taking importance to Laura's denial
"You sound so sure like you are me" Laura said still baffled
"Common girl, I know you better than anyone. If there is something you are bad at hiding then it's your feelings" Ella told her and Laura give up on arguing
"Are you going to tell him or not? It will be three months in a few days now"
"Tell him what? I just like him a little and besides, he is already planning a wedding with another girl"
"Really? Okay I think I get why you called last night" she said with a mischievous smile
"Stop that smile, it's annoying" Laura said acting angry
"Yeah I will, how about we grab a drink and get drunk today?" Ella offered but Laura eyed her and push her away then she stood up to leave
"Where are you going? Common a little holiday won't hurt"
"Am a business woman, I can't avoid that much time" she replied and walk out
"I thought we were hanging out today" Ella called after her but Laura didn't stop and continued to her car
She rest her head on the seat and closed her eyes feeling down all of a sudden, Ella came to the door and knock on it to get her attention. Laura rolled down the car window
"I will come with you" Ella said and turned around to get into the car
"What are you talking about? don't you have to be at work?"
"No, let's go I will stick with you today" " Ella said determined and Laura could only drive away to the company with her.
The both of them soon arrived at the company and they can both notice a strange atmosphere around the place, a couple of people who Laura is sure doesn't belong to her company are standing around and looking suspicious like they are waiting for someone
"Is something going on in your company? This looks like the reporters" Ella observed
"Probably they are here to get information concerning our latest project, its quite a big one"
"Probably" Ella agreed and Laura stopped the car at the entrance and one of the company's driver already move forward to get the car keys from her and park the car properly.
Laura step out of the car with Ella and hand over the key to him but as she walks in, all the reporters they saw earlier suddenly crowded them and start to ask question.
Laura is flabbergasted and move backwards to guard against them while Ella stood in front of her
"Miss Laura, is it true you are still in a relationship with your ex boyfriend?" Laura heard one of them asked and she looked puzzled and shocked by their words.
She thought this has to do with the company's new product that is about to get released but what on earth is she hearing?
Ella was also shocked to hear their questions but she still stood in front of Laura so they wouldn't get closer than they already are
"Miss Laura, are you really cheating on your husband in barely three months to your marriage?"
"The theme of your new product is 'A lovely home' what are you trying to converse to everyone through this?"
"Is your ex the reason why you haven't hold a wedding yet or are you planning to divorce Mr Chris?"
"How are you going to explain this to every customer and fans who has trust in your company?"
The questions were coming in from different people and Laura couldn't even pinpoint any of the questions she should answer, she just stood there on a spot shocked and by then some bodyguard were there to stop the reporters but they are too many and determined to get her
"If you have a bad marriage and life how can you give us assurance about the product you are promoting? Please say something" she heard another question and her heart sink.
This is going to ruin the production that has taken a great deal of effort and time to complete and bring to the market
"Step back, leave right now!" one of the guards barked at the reporters but none of them reacted to his words and continue to pester her more to explain
"Ma'am, please follow me" one of the bodyguard said to her and tried to get her out of the chaos.
She nodded at him and turned to leave with him but noticed the reporters suddenly went silent like something else caught their attention. She turned back to see what it could be and she saw Chris faintly walking towards the crowd
She was reminded of the time he had helped at school from some jocks from another school who wanted her to follow them forcefully.
He had appeared that day like an hero and helped her out skillfully but when the guys refused to let her go so he beat one of them up and the rest ran away
The scene in front of her today looks familiar as Chris walk slowly towards her and the reporters step aside for him to pass while they murmur among themselves and tons of cameras flash in his direction
Chris made his way to her and pull her away from the bodyguard who was with her, his back was turned to the reporters and he held Laura's arm firmly.
Laura noticed the look in his eyes and he looks angry, Laura looked at him feeling a bit tensed then she noticed the divorce papers she dropped for him earlier in his other hand and her heart sank in horror
"It can't be that he sent the reporters right?" she thought doubtfully for a second but shake her head not believing he will do something like that
"Chris" Laura called softly
He wanted to talk and show his anger concerning the divorce papers but the situation isn't right, also he heard some of the reporter's words earlier and could guess what is going on
"Mr Chris, can you please tell us the truth about this? Is your wife really cheating on you?" one of the reporters hired by Mira spoke up and the others start to chip in then the noise continues again
Chris released Laura's arm and gently held her hand in his then he turned to face the crowd and address them, everyone quiet down a bit seeing that he had something to say and wait patiently
"My wife and I will be having our wedding ceremony soon after the successful launch of lovely home, you all will be invited and I will advise you don't publish news you have no evidence of" he said and held their hands up for them to see and take pictures
"Anyone who tries to spread false rumors about my wife, should expect to be summoned by my lawyer" he added before pulling Laura gently with him inside the building and left the reporters speechless unable to ask anymore questions.
His meaning is easily converted to them and if she is really cheating on him then he wouldn't defend her. Some of the reporters start to leave willingly while the bodyguard send the other off and organize things.
Laura and Chris work into the elevator with everyone staring and gossiping, Laura wanted to stop but Chris didn't stop and just continue towards the elevator and press on the floor to her office
"Chris wh…" Chris placed a hand over his mouth to stop her and point to the CCTV
"You don't want to talk here" he whispered and folded his arms, the both of them remain silent till the elevator stops and they got off and walk towards her office bumping into Clara who happens to be rushing somewhere and looks very shock to see them
"Ma'am!" she yelled to Laura's surprise and move back in fear
"What's wrong?" Laura queried confused at her frightened look
"Why do you look like you've just seen a ghost"
"Why are you here? I was about to go meet you" Clara responded panicky and tried to hide her nervousness
"Don't worry about that and just go back to your work" Laura told her and turned back to Chris
"Lets go in" she said to him and they both left, Clara took out the phone she hid behind her and place it to her ears
"What happened? Why did you stopped talking?" Mira asked over the phone
"Mr Chris is here and the reporters left" she informed her
"What! How could they leave so quickly, what happened exactly?" she questioned
"Am going to the first floor to see things for myself" she told her then cut the call and left
