Could Have Been A Victim

The next day, Eva woke up late. While her mother had woken up and prepared breakfast for the children, she still drowned in her sleep until a bird landed on her window and started tweeting, as if to wake her up from her interesting and deep slumber.

She yawned before sitting up. Knowing what the time was, she started preparing herself for the two places she was going with her mother today.

Eva stretched her hands until she was completely satisfied, she went into the bathroom. After a while, she came out and this time around, decided to put on a dress.

It was a long, red floral maxi-gown with plus size. It had long sleeves which Eva felt too comfortable in and with a V-neck that barely exposed her chest. The dress also stopped right below her knees. She decided to perfect it with her fashionable black glasses. "Pervert doctors will definitely check me. I don't want to end up exhausted by trying to pull down my trousers," she thought.

She was completely scared of going to the hospital. Not because she was scared of getting pregnant nor contracting STDs, it was because she found out that she was going to be sharing a secret with the doctor. A secret previously meant to be completely hidden with her mother. She had been raped, no one needed to know that, they would starting looking at her with those pity and uncomfortable eyes while some would gather stupid rumours. She didn't want all those complexities.

Eva had no idea how the doctor would react to her issue but she told herself not to get bothered. Sadly, there would have been many people who had come to the doctor with the same issue. She need not be a tad concerned, Eva chided herself.

Eva applied a slight makeup including her glossy pink lip gloss which she often kept every time in her pause, fortunately she had a spare one because the other one had been stolen along with her purse.

She walked into the sitting room, already famished and just as usual, she could perceive the tantalising dish when she opened the door room. "That aroma...Jjajangmyeon!" Eva exclaimed as she got to the sitting room. That meal was rarely cooked in the house since the twins hated anything noodles, Eva could only wonder why it had been prepared today.

But to Eva's surprise, just like yesterday, her eyes were set on that same man, Ji Hyuk!

Why the hell was he here again and staring at her?

She greeted her mother and then her gaze went to him again before she greeted him. He stopped eating when he noticed her and then smiled while greeting her back, "Good day, Ms. Lee."

Eva slowly walked to her mother, "Excuse me mum, just for a moment!"

Mrs Lee gave Ji Hyuk a pleasant smile before she stood up and followed Eva. When Eva got to the small passage, where she was sure that they couldn't be eavesdropped, she frowned and then questioned, "Mum, why let him here every time? He comes here to eat, he is a glutton!"

"Oh common. Ji Hyuk is a good man and hardly has time for himself. I actually forced him to come here and eat breakfast whenever he had the time before going to work."

"Mum! You know how much that food meant for me! But now, because you have given him I would be allowed to eat only a fraction."

"Comm'n, there is still enough to feed our bellies."

"What about Eros and Cupid?" Eva asked, "You cooked what dish for them?"

"Why do you ask? Do you intend to eat from theirs too? Who is the glutton here now?" Mrs Lee mocked her with her words and Eva just rolled her eyes.

"Besides, when you start working, Ji Hyuk will drop you at work and then take you home once you are done for the day. He offered to do so on my behalf. He is so nice."

Eva thought she didn't hear her mother clearly. "What? What did you say?" However, thinking about work and the interview, she wasn't sure she was going to be picked. Even though she was picked, how could she be contacted when her phone had been stolen too?

"If you had a persistent driver, such a thing wouldn't have happened to you yesterday. I'm sorry, Eva but I just want you to be safe. I will be rest assured if Ji Hyuk picks you instead."

"Doesn't he have a job of his own?"

"He does but he says he doesn't mind."

"I don't want to be a burden, mother. I don't want to owe him even a bunch!"

"I have known him for five years now. He is reliable. Besides, I am sure he would protect you since he is a cop."

Eva's eyes widened and her palms subconsciously collided with her mouth. "Really?"

"Yes. And I thought of going to the station he works at to report about the kidnap-"

"Hell no!" Eva cut her mother short. "Then he will find out that I was raped? No! I don't want anyone familiar with me to have any idea. I will just commit suicide if it happens."

"Yes, dear. I thought about it initially but changed my mind."

Eva nodded and they both went back to the sitting room. While Mrs Lee walked to the dining room to stay in her previous seat, Eva sat on the sofa with Eros and across Cupid whose eyes were fixed on the news.

After a whole while of hideously staring at Ji Hyuk as he finished the dish, she asked Eros, "Why are you guys staying at home today?"

"No school."

"Why?"

"Schools have been temporarily shut down because of the increase in serial killer's victims. Many parents are afraid and have complained. Until the serial killer is caught, we will be left at home."

"That is bad," Eva sighed.

"Heard the news, sis?" Cupid asked Eva and Eva as if shocked, looked at him, quizzically.

"I apparently just got here."

"A victim was found in our street earlier today."

"It turns out that the serial killer has started to spread all over different parts of the city in less than a day. Everyone needs to be careful and alert," Ji Hyuk interrupted. He added, "and prayerful."

Mrs Lee nodded.

The news on the TV had long talked about the serial killing and on the screen was an advertisement for a new facility that was just invented by one of the most popular organisations in the country. Aweseong company, however, Eva wasn't focused on it.

She asked Ji Hyuk instead, "Why can't the whole cops catch one person? Are you trying to prove that the serial killer is wiser than our esteemed cops? The lives of the citizens are in danger but all we get back is feedback on more about the victims and where their bodies are found while being told to be at peace that it occurs only at night. Even the educational system has been affected now which it isn't supposed to be."

Ji Hyuk was stuck but then replied, "We are trying our best."

"But your best is not enough!" Eva chided in, angrily. "Many victims are dying and we can't even open our doors during the day or night and now, it even freaks me to hear that a victim was found in our street."

"Geneva!" Mrs Lee cautioned and Eva breathed in and then swallowed her saliva.

"I could have been a victim." A voice was heard and everyone turned to look at no other than Cupid.
