The Riley estate was draped in white. Reginald Riley's body had not yet been brought home, leaving Sophia Riley to manage the household affairs and oversee a small army of servants. Some distant relatives had already arrived, but no one from the main branch of the Riley family. Sophia didn't mind. Though inexperienced, she could guess what lay ahead.
She didn't know if she had the strength to weather the storm, but she had no choice. According to tradition, the belongings of the deceased had to be gathered and burned. Sophia opened her father's room and began to organize his possessions.
These chores could have been done by a maid, but Sophia needed the distraction. By staying busy, she could ease the burden on her mind. She emptied all his clothes from the wardrobe while a maid sorted through old items elsewhere.
