“It’s fine,” Joe said, staring into Christophe’s eyes.
Christophe’s cheeks flushed a bit. “I’ll make it worth your while…I promise.’’
Cooke walked to the open door of his office. “Dawson will escort you―”
“Dawson? The same Dawsonwho tried to drown me in the steam room?”
Cooke’s mouth jarred open and he looked out to where Dawson stood staring down at the tip of his boots. “Dawson,’’ he yelled, after a moment. “Get out of here. Tell Justin I need him.”
While Cooke’s eyes were turned away, Christophe took a step to Joe, stopping close. “Here,” he said, very low, and pushed a letter into Joe’s hand. “Hide it. It’s from your mother.”
Joe quickly stuffed the letter into his trousers.
His mother?
Christophe had seen her?
“All right, Dubois, it’s time for you to leave―”
“Would you please give me a minute? You owe me that much, you incompetent swine.”
