Chapter 45

“Looks like that Dubois kid just lost his gold membership in this place.”

Joe looked up at Buck and noted the satisfied expression on his face.

“See, Joe,” Buck said, before walking away, “I told you when you first came here, you have to be careful who you associate with. Now, it looks like you’re the only protection the kid has in here.”

“Where did they take him?”

“I don’t know,” Buck called out, out of sight. “All I know is, Williams and his gang are due back to work next week. That’s probably how long the kid has left to live. Better make the best of it!”

When he heard the jingling of keys, Joe sat up and turned to see Guard Dawson escorting Dubois back into their cell. He immediately scanned Dubois’s face for any sign of violence, but couldn’t see any.

Dawson shoved Dubois inside and sneered. “Here’s your wife back,” he said, laughing. He shook his head and stepped out, looking at them through the bars. “You both disgust me.” He spat to the side and walked away.
