“But you did good,” Joe said, more gently. “Maybe you’ll be all right in here, after all.” With his quick temper and absolute disregard for authority, Dubois could make a reputation for himself in Linhart. Could even forge some alliances. Gain some friends. “Just keep fighting back, and they’ll leave you alone. Eventually.” Joe tried to catch Dubois’s eye. “Are you listening to any of this?”

“Of course I am, Joe.” But Dubois stared on blankly, chewing on his thumb nail.

Joe stood and lit the stove top’s burner. “Want some tea?”

“Yes, you’re very kind, thank you.”

Joe smiled a little. “Did he hurt you? The guard, I mean.”

“Joe, oh, listen―”

“Well, I guess he couldn’t have hurt you that bad.” Joe poured some water into the pot.

“Listen―”

“But you’re gonna be all right.” Joe watched the water start to simmer and then looked over at Dubois. “I’m glad, ‘cause I don’t need to be worrying about you all the time.”
