Chapter 14

“Keep your head down, Vega, okay? You only have four years to go. Don’t mess up now.”

A guard blew his whistle and they were made to gather their trays. Filing down the tiers, Joe looked around for Dubois, but couldn’t see him. He didn’t like this. Didn’t like this at all. Gauthier walked past him, and Joe discreetly called out to him.

Gauthier slowed down, so as to match Joe’s stride. “Oui?”

“Where’s Dubois?”

“Dunno.’’

“But you said no one was to touch him.”

Gauthier walked straight, talking between pressed lips. “I don’t know where they took him. They don’t tell me these things.”

“Goddamn it.” Joe felt the walls coming down on him. This place was sick. This place was inhumane, full of animals. They were all beasts in here, pissing on each other. “Find out where he is,” he said, looking over at Gauthier, meeting his eyes. “Do you hear me? Find him.”

Why was he getting so riled up over that man?
