"I did it " Zawadi screamed excitedly coming through the door.
"You did what Cupcake? " Lucas asked turning in her direction.
"I got the job. I am now officially a dance teacher " she squealed.
"Really? I am so happy for you. I knew you'd get it. Come here" he said extending his arms.
She eagerly went to him and wrapped her arms around his torso.
"I am so happy " She said.
"And I am so proud of you " Lucas said.
"Thank you. For loving me, for always being there for me... " she began.
"Hey hey, it's okay. You don't need to thank me. I should be the one thanking you. I love you, so much" he laid a kiss on her forehead.
"I also have some good news to share with you. My friend, Mark has been working on your parents case and he just told me he has found out about them. in fact, he is just about to send the information about your parents. " Lucas informed her.
"Really, thank you so much. "she beamed hugging him tighter.
His phone vibrated and he took it out of his pocket to study it.
"Hmm, here it is. " he said scanning through his phone" actually , it's like everything about you, ever since you were born. Even Ahana is mentioned here. " he said still focused on his phone.
I didn't know you had a brother?" he asked without looking at her.
"Yeah I did. His name was Jasiri but he died of cancer, a long time a go" she explained.
"I am sorry " he said.
"It's okay"
Suddenly, Lucas's expression became rigid.
"What is it ? " she asked worriedly.
"Is this true?" he asked, his jaw clenched.
"Is what true, I don't know what you are talking about " she said
"You...you are a prostitute " he spat out with so much hatred in his voice, she almost didn't recognize it.
"What? " she managed to say, still shocked.
"You are a prostitute. " he repeated coldly.
"No, you... what are you saying? " she stammered.
"It's true, isn't it? " he asked stepping back from her.
"No, how could you think so lowly of me. Look, this just a misunderstanding okay. Ahana was involved in such business but I was never a part of it. I am not a prostitute, you were my first kiss remember? " she advanced towards him but he moved back.
"So you just sleep with your clients without kissing them? " he asked angrily.
"No, you are wrong. I have never even been close to other men before. You are the only man I have ever let close to me"
"What about John. You spent a day in his appartment when we had a fight. " he said.
"Well yes but John Is gay. And he wasn't even with me for an hour. He went to work remember " she defended.
"You must have slept with him before he went to work " Lucas growled.
"I have never slept with anyone. I love you so will you stop all this accusations you are throwing at me because you are hurting me" she shouted on the verge of tears.
"Well, the truth hurts doesn't it? " he said with malice.
"The truth? You won't even listen to my side of the story and you are talking about the truth? You know what, go to hell " she shouted and disappeared into the bedroom.
She threw herself on the bed and let the tears fall freely. She was sad that he still didn't trust her after all they had been through. It only took a sentence from a report for him to question her.
She was aware that he was hurt but he could have talked to her, he could have listened, and as usual he did neither.
It was as if with ever step they took forward, they took two more back and she was getting tired of his lack of trust in her.
She waited and waited for him to come apologise but instead she heard the front door shut. She buried her head in the pillow and cried even more.
Zawadi woke up a few hours later, she groaned as she rubbed her forehead to ease the brewing headache as she attempted to get up from the bed. She slowly stood on her feet and went to the living room.
"Lucas" she called, walking through the house.
She checked everywhere, even outside, but he wasn't there. She sighed and went to making dinner.
When she finished cooking, she set her food in a plate and placed the remaining in the microwave for Lucas.
Her mind drifted back to her fight with Lucas. She knew that she should have told him sooner about her past, all of it. When Ahana took her in as a child, she didn't know what it meant to be a courtesan. But as she grew, she learned what it meant. But Ahana never let them near her 'business'. They were never apart of that world and Ahana herself had made sure of it.
They had lived a normal life apart from the few taunts that she and Eugene endured from their friends growing up.
Ahana had been kind enough to take her in and raise her as her own and in Zawadi's eyes, she was the mother she had been deprived of. She, therefore had no right to judge her for what she did .
She heard the front door open and rushed towards it, knowing that it was Lucas.
Her steps faltered when she took in the sight before her. Lucas had his arms wrapped around a woman, they were kissing passionately.
She gasped and stepped back, her heart breaking with every second that passed.
"Oh, hi. "Lucas slurred.
He was drunk, Zawadi realised. She cleared her throat, not sure what to say.
"Zawadi baby, this is Joy. She is just like you " he said.
Zawadi's eyebrows furrowed as she tried to analyse his words.
"No, I mean, she is a slut. Just like you" he said with a smirk.
Zawadi stumbled back, as if she had been slapped squarely in the face.
She watched sadly as they exchanged one last kiss before the girl turned and left. She watched her disappear out the door the she turned her attention to Lucas.
"You are drunk. I'll help you get to bed"she said ignoring the pain in her chest.
"No, I'll manage. Go find another man to help get to bed. " he said before pushing past her and going up to their room.
She went after him and took of his shoes then covered him properly.
'Don't take whatever he did to heart Zawadi, he was just drunk. He is not in his senses" Zawadi told herself.
Then she got under the covers beside him and slept.
