Black like Night

6:07 pm, the first day of Autamn in the year 2000, Sarah was born. The usual relief after birth was experienced, but then the people in the room froze, as they readied for what came next. The arrival of The Keys. The Keys came at a short time after birth, and their number could be anything, which was especially terrifying with the power they held. Not a single sound pierced the room, and the shaking of the nurses was the only sign of movement.

A whine pierced the air, and Satallo began to cry, although at that time she had no name. As this sound began, the darkness in the room was drawn to above the baby, who lay on a table with a thin blanket. It swirled in a spiral pattern above, before sharply forming into small dark shapes to gently float down to the now screaming child.

And then came the dread. A wave of fear so thick it choked out your breath coated the surrounding area, the cold trays and the unconcious mother. Some fell to their kness and others bit their lips, holding back their sobs and terror. The child continued to scream, being at the center of this fear, drowning in the fear and confusion it experienced.

"I- It's over rig- ight?" Melinda was a learning doctor, and this had been her first ever live Key Forming. There were small nods from around the room, as they to tried to come back to their senses. Stuttering sighs of relief could be heard from nearly everyone, and their hearts pounded like drums

The more experienced doctors and nurses began to slowly get back into the what they were supposed to do, but they still trembled from the after effects of that feeling coursing through their veins, their souls.

Melinda stared down heartbrokenly at the child, as the it's mother had passed away from the strength of The Wave. Her brow creased together as she pondered this small child's future, and whilst she was doing so, the tv in the corner of the small hospital room flashed, with the text "New information about keys discovered" And then fading away to two women behind a desk.

Melinda picked up and began to cradle the small boy, as she lost all previous thought and turned to the screen to learn even just a small part about the unknown Keys. The women on the screen both appeared to be quiet pale, and stammered when they spoke.

"There is reason to believe that Keys... Are a physical embodiment of fear. This is not to say they should be feared, they only represent the fears we possess. A study was conducted by the Government, who found that all citizens who held Keys in the shape of a man trapped in a box had claustrophobia. This hypothesis has also been proven correct through various surveys."

Melinda began to slightly shake, and this shuddering movement woke the baby from it's slumber and it began to cry. As she calmed him, she saw the two dark objects splayed out on the cabinet next to the baby's cradle. Two black Keys, that apparently showed what this baby was afraid of. As she wlked closer to these keys she began to realise something.

Most people had at least four keys, and no one had ever Formed less than two keys. Did that mean he was lucky? That he wasn't going to fear as much as everybody else? She entertained the thought for a while before gazing down upon the symbols at the opposite end of the Keys handle. One appeared to be a vortex of some kind, and an alomst dark light emanated from the center of the vortex, and made it difficult to see into the Key's center.

The other one was much larger, and was much mpre peculiar than the first. This one looked just like a normal key, except for the ring at the base of it's handle. Adorned on the edge of the ring were three tiny Keys, without any details on them. He was afraid of Keys? What did that mean? Melinda had never seen a Key quite like this.

Melinda placed down Satello and sat down in a visitor chair not too far from it's cradle. She had volunteered to watch over this child, even though it would have been perfectly suitable to send it to an orphanage.

She quickly fell asleep, and during that time she fell asleep, Satello woke up again, and even though he cried and he cried, no one came inside to help him. After crying and screaming for so long he was sobbing loudly, he felt a numbingly cold fear wash over him, and his newly developed brain remembered what this feeling. Darkness crawled out of the shadows in the room, and a Key formed above the baby, right as Melinda woke up from the terror.

She stared in shock as a day old baby received a Key, something that she had never heard of happening before. She quickly scrambled to see what the Key was, and reached into the cradle to pull out a small black Key, with a ring on the end. Inside the, stood a single person, crying all by themselves in the otherwise empty ring.

She quickly put it back down, not understanding wha it meant, when a doctor burst into the room, having felt The Wave, although a weaker version of it.

"The boy... He Formed... a third Key." Just that sentance alone was to make the doctor completely stop in his tracks.

"What do you mean? Forming always happens at birth! Always! There is no exception to this rule!" Melinda understood why he was so upset over this information. He had undoubtedly found out about the truth of Keys, and was struggling to process that, yet alone a complete challenge to what they previously knew.

That'll do it for this chapter, it was supposed to just be a nice opening chapter for Keys to be given at least a little bit of clarity. I will try to upload this series regularly, as it has a lot of potential, and I would like to se it grow

First chapter for hopefully a really interesting book!
