I regained consciousness, only to find myself surrounded by darkness. I attempted to move around, looking for a light switch or something, and soon discovered I was without a body. I quickly started freaking out, but just as quickly as it came, I felt a wave of calm wash over me and with it, the surrounding area shifted. The darkness began gaining color until eventually it resolved into an office. Still without a body, I glanced around the office.
The first thing I noticed were the awards and certificates hanging on the wall, interspersed with what look like abstract art pieces. After that came the absolute monster of a desk in front of me and someone who looked like Morgan Freeman sitting on the other side of it. With my mind calm, I noticed how my current situation reminded me of the start of Isekai and Transmigration stories I had read in my free time. Thinking I might have an inkling of what is going I asked a question. "Are you a Random Omnipotent Being?"
He looked up with a smile and answered. "Yes, I am. To be blunt, you're dead. The apartment building you were living in burned to the ground while you were asleep. You died in your sleep to smoke inhalation. I'll give you a moment to process this before we get on to why you're here.'
After doing as he instructed and giving it some time to sink in, I realized the fact that I was dead didn't particularly bother me. At 30, I had lived a rather full life. I was a smart, if introverted child, and breezed through school. As the youngest graduate in my county's history, I then pursued a dual major in Computer Science and Criminology at Stanford graduating at twenty-two. I spent the next three years visiting different countries, partying my way around the world. I spent the last five years of my life climbing through the ranks of the Indiana State Police as a detective and either watching anime or gaming in my free time.
The ROB, realizing I've finished going through my thoughts, looked at me again and spoke. "Now that you've settled, let's go over why you're here. We, well, most of us ROBs need forms of entertainment, just as some stories from your world depict, and we chose you at random to be our next selection offer."
I blinked. "So, what does that mean for me?"
"If you accept, we will send you to AU versions of fictional stories you know of where the good guys, for various reasons, are going to lose. You will get a random system after you have entered your first world. Your only goal is to provide us with entertainment."
That didn't seem like a terrible deal to me. The thought of traveling around the multi-verse was extremely appealing. My next question was obvious. "So, how does this work? Do I go as I am now?"
He quickly replied. "No no no. We have noticed that sending normal people into these worlds absent any power ups quickly leads to their deaths. What we are going to do is give you options based on whichever world you chose as your starting one. Speaking of that, let's get your options pulled up." When he finished speaking, he pointed to my right where a spin wheel had materialized. "Give that a good spin. You have three tries."
Noticing I now had a body, I turned and gave the wheel a spin. It landed on Twilight AU. The second spin landed on Stargate AU and the third one landed on Harry Potter AU.
The ROB spoke up again. "Now that your options are in front of you, take a moment to choose which will be your first world. Note, however, that you do not get a new body between worlds."
I took a moment to ponder each world. If I was understanding what he was saying right, the body I built for my first world, is the body I would have going forward, minus any augments I make. With that in mind, Harry Potter has to be my choice. Being able to do magic is too much to ignore. I could maybe get magic through whichever system I get, but I don't wanna chance it being too expensive to get or not available at all within the system. Firming up my choice, I spoke. "I choose the Harry Potter AU."
He smiled and handed me a tablet. On it was a Harry Potter Choose Your own Adventure form. After going over it for what felt like forever, I reviewed my choices.
Starting points: 60
Difficulty:
Merlin (+60): Cheat Mode
Origins:
Half-blood Orphan (+5): You will start in an orphanage.
Well-Adapted (-2): Able to function in both worlds.
Age 5 (-5): You wake up at age five. Old enough for your new brain to support your memories and personality.
Wealthy (-5): You come from a wealthy family. Speak to Gringotts bank for further information.
Magical Talents:
Transfiguration Affinity (-10): Transfiguration is the field of magic dedicated to altering the physical elements of the world. In its most basic form, this field allows users to transform one thing into another, such as turning a cup into a bird, switching traits between creatures, or changing the environment.
DADA Affinity (-15) Offense Specialty (-5) Defense Specialty (-5): DADA is the field dedicated to defending against and combating dangerous magical creatures, effects, and wizards.
Runic Affinity - (10): Runic magic is dedicated to the use of runic languages in a variety of fields of magic, including warding, rituals, and enchanting.
Innate Abilities:
Legilimens (-9): You are a natural-born legilimens. Legilimency is the art of probing minds to detect lies, gather info, and influence people's minds. Typically, legilimency is a learnable, if difficult, style of magic. Unlike those who have learned this skill through practice, however, your legilimency is an instinctual part of your magic. Your power targets all people in an area around you unless blocked out, and you do not require line-of-sight or a spell to use it. Someone can block or counterattack this with occlumency.
Metamorphmagus (-11): You were born with the ability to change your physical appearance without the need for a potion or a spell. You can do this as often as you like at will, and can even change sex or take on inhuman traits like vibrantly colored hair and animal noses. Your forms will take no effort to maintain, but you will always have a 'default appearance in the case that your magic fails. You also cannot prevent aging by changing shape. This change in appearance will fool most magical detections.
Occlumency (-3): You gain the fully mastered ability to block the mental intrusions of others. This will allow you to provide false information to mind readers and break free of some mental charms, such as the imperius curse. This ability can be learned normally with study and talent, but by taking this option, you have mastered the skill from the start.
Perks:
Reincarnation + (-5): Your previous life is fresh in your mind. The memories are distinct but detached. You won't suffer from existential or identity crisis. It's easy to let go of your unfinished business, say farewell to your friends and family and embrace your new life.
Wandless Magic (-15): This perk helps with doing spells wandlessly by adapting your magic to mimic the end result.
Photographic Memory (-1): The ability to remember any information you've read or seen.
Items:
Modern Tech (-1) Laptop: You may bring a piece of any muggle technology (appropriate to your time period). This could be a cell phone, gun, laptop, camera, or anything else you could reasonably have access to. This technology has been modified to operate off ambient magic rather than electricity, meaning it will operate at Hogwarts without issues. This tech can also interface with magic more easily.
Mini Map (-3): A piece of parchment similar to the marauder's map. When activated, this map will display everything in a 700ft. radius around you, including secret passages and the locations of people. Unlike the marauder's map, this will continue to work in areas other than Hogwarts. When not in use, the map will resemble a mundane piece of parchment.
Philosopher's Stone (-10): this stone can produce the elixir of life, a substance capable of extending a drinker's lifespan for as long as they continue to consume it regularly. Drinking the elixir will also heal any wounds, restoring the drinker to full health as long as they are not already dead. This stone can turn any metal into pure gold.
Misc:
House-elf (-3)
Phoenix (-3)
Most of my choices lean towards making me powerful in the setting. Being a half-blood would allow me to thrive in either magical or non-magical worlds without hassle or suspicion. Being an orphan gave me freedoms that having parents would complicate, and for choosing to wake up at age five well, I want to redo my non-magical education with the benefit of Occlumency because a lot of what I've learned through life I've already forgotten. The rest were either to make it easier to learn magic or were for convenience.
I looked up at the ROB and asked a few questions. "What about gender and my family background? All I can choose from this is that they are wealthy."
He answered. "We leave gender up to chance. Your background won't be quiet as random, but you will have to discover information about your family's history on your own. Now that everything's set, let's send you off."
Before I could reply, my world went dark again.
