The okavengo delta is a river that flows down from the mountain every year and transforms the Kalahari desert into an oasis.The delta river sustains all life on the wetland during its season. The elephants spend most of the year searching for food and water and for the herd the delta season is a joyous time. The herd consist of the matriarch who oversees the herd for food and protection and there s always another next in line who learns the act of leadership from the matriarch. The matriarch protects the herd and when the delta River is starting to dry because of the season the matriarch leads the herd through the desert and salt pan to a temporary residence called palm island to wait out the dry season.The journey and time to wait out the dry season is eight months.The journey is not pleasant its a must for their survival.
