CHAPTER 6 - EYES LOCKED

"Elena! Wait!" Cameron chased after Elena and two pairs of eyes fell on her.

"Yes?" Elena turned around and relaxed as if nothing had happened in there.

"Could you go back to my room? Just a minute." Cameron asked who also immediately compensated for Elena's body language and attitude. "There's one thing I'm forgetting, the Brent Hawk case. Do you remember? I need your help." Cameron hastily added so that the two secretaries wouldn't be the least bit suspicious. There was some relief that George wasn't there, so he didn't bother explaining anything to his old friend, even though George knew very well what Cameron and Emily's relationship was like.

"Oh, of course." Elena said. Then Elena followed Cameron who walked first into his office room.

"What else?" Elena glared. "Ready to apologize and explain what you accuse me of?"

"Damn it!" Cameron stroked his hair. "Damn bastard! My girlfriend... my girlfriend is getting married."

Elena raised her eyebrows. "I really don't care and I don't think we're that close to talking about personal things."

"I'm talking about this because you heard it all," Cameron said irritably

"I swear that I really don't care about Cameron Jones's miserable private life," Elena responded.

Then the phone on Cameron's desk suddenly rang again.

"You know him?" Cameron rolled his eyes when he heard Emily's voice again on the other end of the line. "No, no way!" Cameron said later.

"You obviously know him, he's Julian who's always around you when you're at the college golf club,"

Cameron digested Emily's words, imagining a tall and thin man with bangs and brackets attached to his upper and lower teeth.

Then a minute later Cameron and Emily started yelling at each other again. "The golf clubber? The human? HA?"

At the end of his rage, Cameron heard Elena's voice commenting, "The snob is starting to really lose control. Totally flustered."

"For God's sake you can't marry a geeky and stupid man like Julian! You're a popular woman! The cheerleader! You weren't meant to grow up and marry the golf club!"

"Shit! I'll never be able to talk to you if you act like this! You've lost your sanity, Cam!" Emily replied fiercely.

"You made me like this! Made me spend a lot of time in this Crazy City and made me meet women who are as crazy as all my jobs!"

Hearing what Cameron had just said, Elena raised her middle finger along with a message she wrote quickly in Cameron's face.

Indifferent! , this time she doesn't really care about her honor as a good woman who always keeps how elegant she is.

Control yourself! Just state your important points to the woman! Don't forget I'm suing you, Cam!

That's what Elena wrote.

The first and second words seemed to slap Cameron right on the mark. Again, Cameron rubbed his face roughly.

"I'll be coming to Chicago soon. After my business here is done."

"No! No, Cameron—you've got to stay in DC calm yourself and get on with your work first."

"I'll go home!"

"Good, so I'll be the winner to get the Johanson Group case." Elena said clearly enough that Cameron glared at her.

"I'm going home after a meeting with my client this weekend, so you have time to cancel the wedding. Or..."

"Or what?" challenged Emily.

"Or I'll kill him," Cameron said simply. "For God's sake you should cancel your marriage." Cameron added as he hung up the phone.

"What?" asked Cameron who looked straight at Elena's face.

"Interesting," said Elena. "What are you doing?" Elena let out a disgusted voice. While crossing her arms and staring at Cameron sharply, Elena spoke again. "Listen, Cam. You're a criminal defense attorney, a debater recognized by many as a professional debater. And just now was the saddest debate show I've ever seen."

"This is not the case, Elena!"

"You forget that the whole world is a judicial case and ... we are all suspects."

"I don't think you used that quote correctly," Cameron joked. "This is my life!"

"Indeed. But you look so pathetic," said Elena again.

"Emily is not like you! She is not a woman like you."

"Like what? What do you mean?" asked Elena decisively.

The first time it occurred to Cameron that he had to tell Elena everything he knew so that she wouldn't be acting like that anymore. But then his logic told him that he should apologize and thank Elena.

"Well, just like you."

"You say it with a negative connotation that's more disgusting than a dead cockroach, Cameron Jones!" Elena then left Cameron who was still speechless.

There was an uncharacteristic feeling of annoyance as Cameron's words kept replaying in his head.

A woman like you, a woman like you.

"Fuck!" Elena cursed and returned to her desk. Trying to focus on making all the important points of each case that he will handle for the next few weeks.

nothing. Elena couldn't concentrate at all. His mind kept wandering over all the things he had just heard.

Cameron has a daughter? Girl? But not married? Oh, God! What kind of a man is he?

Elena cupped her face on the table, closed her eyes and hoped that no one would suddenly enter her room.

Annoying man and arrogant man like Cameron Jones, have a sad personal life.

***

That night Cameron arrived home with a torn face and a broken heart. He decided to go home early and for the first time in his life he didn't care that Elena's office room light was still bright.

Now he has to openly compete with his sarcastic, perfectionist junior Elena Smith with a crazy deal he just agreed to and moments later he suddenly gets news that is no less crazy than the decision he has just made.

Wedding? What exactly is marriage? How can a hero Cameron Jones be betrayed by someone he loves?

"Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!" Cameron kept cursing.

This time he didn't know who was hurt more. His heart or his ego?

Suddenly the image of Elena who might be able to help him get Emily back to him just flashed. Cameron couldn't believe that Elena's shadow could easily distract him. But after all, Cameron clearly can't deny that Elena is a woman who is able to reveal whatever ugliness she has as well as a woman who is able to make her think rationally.

With his ace card he should be able to easily ask Elena for help.

But should it?
