"Ow" he said as he placed his hand over his chest "Why so distant?" he asked her with a chuckle.
"This a formal party and as I told you before, we are no longer close enough to talk so familiarly."
Woo Yeon felt his chest tighten. He shouldn't have expected her to greet him with open arms, after all, the last time they talked, it didn't end so well.
Woo Yeon grabbed Ha Eun by the wrist, and the two walked outside. No one was around, and the chatter of everyone was lower so they could talk without raising their voices. He took this opportunity to find a way to get to stop being angry with him.
"Ha Eun, what can I do to make you stop being mad at me?" he asked her "Whatever I did, I will make it up to you."
Ha Eun was shocked by this. Did he not know why she was angry with him?
"I want us to go back to how we were. I want us to…well…to be together."
Ha Eun scoffed and looked away in disgust and amazement "You disgust me. I'm leaving" she said, but Woo Yeon stood in front of her.
"Please, don't" he told her.
"You sure have some guts to say that so openly. If anyone listened in they would think I'm being unfaithful to Chang Wook."
"Chang Wook again" Woo Yeon said, annoyed, "Stop pretending you like him!" he yelled angrily. Ha Eun was surprised by this and took a step back.
"I see how you're pretending to like him. You faked a marriage just so you could keep your position as CEO, right?"
Ha Eun widened her eyes but quickly composed herself. They talked about that on the news and the internet. She can play it off as a rumor, just like before.
"That was just a rumor."
"You are a horrible liar Ha Eun. It's easy to find out that your marriage is a hoax with just a little investigating. The messages between you and Chang Wook were always business-related until the day you two got married, video feeds show both of you never got along until the two of you walked into your building with smiles on your faces. A lot of things don't add up. I'm surprised your family hasn't questioned your marriage."
He found out something Ha Eun wants to keep secret; it was obvious to her that he was going to blackmail her, which made her chuckle "I guess it's true when they say what comes around goes around" she said. She blackmailed Chang Wook; it's only fair if she gets blackmailed too.
"Aren't you going to ask me what I want?" Woo Yeon asked her.
"You're going to tell me anyway, so why bother?" she answered.
"Dissolve your marriage. You should be with someone that loves you."
"Who? You?" she asked. Woo Yeon didn't answer. He looked at her with saddened eyes.
"I just want what's best for you" he said.
"Did you ever wonder if maybe, just maybe, that Chang Wook is what is best for me?"
"You don't love him" Woo Yeon said. Ha Eun looked at Woo Yeon and didn't answer.
"What made you stop loving me?" Woo Yeon asked her "Tell me, what did I do to make you run away from me?" he paused "Tell me so I can make it up to you…"
Ha Eun couldn't believe he had no idea what he did wrong which made her angry "You tried to kill me yet you wonder what you did wrong and how to make it up to me?!" she shouted.
"I could never make friends at school, but that's because you turned everyone against me and then if things couldn't get worse, you, my best friends, my only friend…you, the one guy I ever liked pushed my head underwater. I struggled for air, but you pushed me in deeper. I fought you, but you kept me there. You tried to kill me and got pretty close to it too."
Tears started to stream down Ha Eun's eyes. She was angry and sad at the same time.
"For years you've haunted my nightmares, I tried to figure out why you did that, but nothing made sense. So, tell me…why, did you do it?" she asked him.
Woo Yeon was speechless. His eyes started to water, he looked down as he clenched his fists. He murmured something but Ha Eun couldn't hear him.
"What?" she asked.
He looked back up at her. His cheeks were red and tears were streaming down his face.
"You were the only thing that was ever mine!" he said loudly.
Ha Eun had no idea how to answer.
"You…my life wasn't as great as it looked. When I was a kid I was allowed to have friends but I wasn't allowed to get close enough to ask them to have sleepovers; I was never given toys as presents but textbooks. My birthday was never even celebrated. My parents would beat me if I did something they didn't like and that gray life continued day after day. I felt lost and empty but I couldn't show it…" Woo Yeon paused.
"Then I met you. You, who was small and pretty, with big eyes and long hair, you looked just as lost and as empty as me. Because of you, I was slowly able to smile and really mean it. You were all I ever needed but then I saw a guy confess to you. That day I realized I liked you and the thought that you didn't need me, that you would leave me…it scared me."
