Chapter 7: Olivia's Birthday Party

The day went by so fast. I went home and decided to rest. My grandma made me idiyappam. It is a south Indian dish that is made up of rice flour, salt, and water which is paired up with korma. It looks like a string hopper. It originated in Kerala state in India.

My ancestors were from Tamilnadu, India and we speak Tamil in India. When my grandma moved to New York City, she did not teach Tamil to my mother. So I only knew very little and I called my grandma Achchi. She liked that I call her Achchi rather than grandma or granny.

“Achchi, the idiyappam tasted so good.”

“I will make it every day chellam (sweetheart).”

“Thank you, Achchi”
