As soon as Lynn opened the automatic roll-up garage door, he realized what a bad decision it was to try to reach the cabin by car. The streets were total chaos. The cars were all lined-up and there was no way he could go through them. He could hear people screaming through the distance.
He had two options, get stuck in the traffic like many others, or walk oby foot.
"The latter one, is not an option… I need to transform back ASAP," Lynn thought.
He would not been able to defend himself alone, so he needed Li Mu Qing with him, but he also could not stay transformed forever, since it was one of the rules his grandfather had told him to remember.
Lynn had his hands on the steering wheel, but he did not move the car. Li Mu Qing already scared that the "carriage" was broken interrupted Lynn's internal debate.
"Lynn, is the car broken?"
Lynn was having like his tenth mental breakdown today and the chaos outside that he was seeing was totally not helping the situation.
"No… Yes… No…" Lynn muttered, not even sure what he should reply even though the question was a simple yes or no. He cleared his throat and replied in a clearer answer, "No, General Li, the car is not broken. I just need to think how we are going to drive if everyone is stuck in here."
"In my time, we had secret routes to escape. Don't you have that here?" Li Mu Qing asked curiously.
The web novel general was fascinated by this modern world where he had been teleported into. There were so many curious things in this new world. Scary, yet curious.
"That's it!" Lynn shouted in victory. This made Li Mu Qing jump a bit from where he was seated.
"Thank you, General Li! I've got an idea!" He remembered that even though the main road that led to the countryside was stuck, the off-road was not. If you could call a forest with sort of a path an off-road route. He was not even sure a 4x4 SUV can pass through it, but what other option did he had.
"General Li, do you think my neighbors would mind if I drove through their backyards?" Lynn asked with confidence irradiating through his face.
"Well…" Before Li Mu Qing could finish answering Lynn, Lynn was already driving the car out of the garage and closing the roll up door again. Not as if people would not be able to enter to his house through the front door which was all broken down by the zombies.
"Wait… Lynn…" Li Mu Qing tried to say as he clung for his life in the grab handle. The general had in mind that the car was going to go in a carriage carried by person speed, not a horse at full throttle.
Meanwhile, Lynn drove the car to the backyard, where he broke a fence or two that were separating the houses.
"This is such a bad idea!" Li Mu Qing shouted.
"Calm down, General Li. The fun part starts in the forest!" Lynn said.
"Wh… What?" Li Mu Qing asked surprised.
"Yeah, the GPS…" Lynn said, pointing with one hand the small screen remembering that Li Mu Qing does not know what a GPS is, "the GPS will not work completely well in the forest. This is a map that will guide us to the cabin." Lynn finished explaining.
"Why would a map not work well?" Li Mu Qing asked confused. The maps he knew were on paper, not live location, AI intelligence guiding maps.
Lynn was continuing driving straight into the forest while continuing breaking the neighbors' fences.
His day was getting crazier with each passing second. Soon, Lynn saw the forest. Their sort of safe haven for the moment. He knew that at the other side of the forest, was the road to the countryside, the problem was that he was not sure the path to drive to reach the other side.
"Well… General Li, how should I explain it… Our GPS works by signal and a lot of trees can alter that signal, so the GPS won't show us exactly where to go."
"Why would you want something that won't even work correctly?" Li Mu Qing asked, not understanding why humans would prefer a map that could not even do correctly the work of a map.
"It normally works correctly, there are just certain instances that it may fail," Lynn tried to explain as he started entering the path that led to the forest.
The path was very narrow. There was no turning back, it was a one way, the path was usually used for hikers. Since he was not a hiker, he was not sure if it led to the other side where the countryside was or if it was just a small trail. Normally, people just hiked a mile or two, not twenty or thirty miles. No one was crazy enough to camp in this forest just to end up in the countryside.
"Let's hope luck is on my side," Lynn thought as he turned on the car lights since the road was dark from all the trees that surrounded them.
Sadly, luck was not on Lynn's side. The GPS instead of showing him the hiking trail to the countryside, showed him the driving route. Lynn stopped the car when they were deeper in the forest, and tried to configure the GPS setting to hiking, but since the trail was not so famous, he was not able to configure it.
"Now, we are lost…" Lynn muttered.
