He already uses the health potions to recover his health. As you know for a mage, close combat fights were his weakness and because of this Alex maintained a distance from those monsters. Fortunately, he wasn't alone on this battlefield, because those NPC were also helping him and because of this he could maintain the distance from those goblins.

Even though Alex did not know how many Goblin Soldiers he had killed, he could see that there weren't many Goblin soldiers left. Because of this he also increased the attack. It only took 5 minutes to kill all those Goblin soldiers and after that Alex instantly attacked with his electric shock toward those Goblin mages. 

He already recovered his Mana and because of this, he once again uses the multiple fireball skill. You can say that he did not want to give them any chance to attack and because of this he just continuously attacked those Goblin mages. But at this time the Goblin captain already came in front of those NPC. He was killing those NPC.

Even after seeing that Goblin captain Alex did not react because he knows that before attacking the Goblin captain he needed to kill those Goblin mages. But that does not mean he won't be attacking that Goblin captain. He just continuously recovered his Mana and at the same time he also continuously used his attack toward those Goblin mages. Fortunately, those Goblin mages didn't have that much ability and because of this, they were unable to react that quickly.
