chapter 6-phase one

The tunnel started to vibrate all around, and a huge wall of the tunnel started to move upwards revealing the examiner standing there.

He was in a suit holding something by a string that looked like a face on a pouch, the man had long purple hair curled upwards with a thin curly moustache, green eyes and strangely no mouth.

The examiner began to speak "I apologise for the delay, thank you for waiting, the entry period for hunter applicants is officially closed, so with no further adieu the hunter exam will now begin. One final word of caution, if you're short on luck or ability keep in mind that there is a real chance you could end up seriously injured. Death is another distinct possibility."

At the mention of death several people tensed up for a second but only a second, showing the level of skill everyone has to get so far in the hunters exam.

The examiner carried on "if you're willing to accept the risks involved I'll ask you to follow me now, but for the rest of you kindly exit through the elevator located behind you"

Nobody flinched at these words and stayed true to their spot showcasing their resolve to become hunters.

After a short delay the examiner continued "Right then, very well. All 404 applicants will participate in phase 1"

He then turned around and began to walk into the tunnel at a slow march, those at the front started to walk forwards following the examiner.

As time went on the pace started to increase, yet the examiner didn't seem to be increasing in speed yet was still going faster than everyone else.

The other applicants started to run.

Adam kept to the front at the left hand side wall trying to stay out of site.

The examiner started to speak while walking, not seeming any bit exhausted yet probably due to nen strengthening his body.

"How rude of me, I neglected to introduce myself. I am Satotz, your examiner for the first phase of the exam. It's my responsibility to lead you all to the second phase"

The bald ninja, Adam not remembering his name, questioned the examiner "the second? Whatever happened to the first?"

To which he got the reply "The first is already underway" a cluster of gasps and muttering was heard from behind Adam after the realisation that this is the first real test they would have to pass in order to become a hunter.

"The first phase is quite simple all you have to do is follow me to the second phase, so try to keep up"

Adam couldn't agree more, to those who learnt to control their nen, which improved their whole physique, they could go at greater speeds and not nearly feel as tired.

But he knew that to those who haven't learnt to control nen yet would find this a rather difficult challenge, as they have to keep up with a fully qualified hunter who had learnt to control his nen for many years already, and had a far greater strength than what is shown by his appearance.

It is even more challenging as those who have no knowledge of nen and have trained all their lives will realise a gap between themselves and this examiner, but wouldn't know how to close this gap leaving a psychological burden on them.

Although Adam only learnt to control his nen recently and hadn't had the opportunity to train yet, he could still compete with the best warriors in the world who hadn't learnt nen.

It breaches the gap that trained martial arts masters have to normal civilians. They may have stronger bodies and have mastered fighting, but if a civilian learns nen then it would be hard to see who would win. However this only applies to the mid and lower tier martial arts masters: people like the Zoldyck family are some of the best assassins and have learnt some of the most effective techniques to kill by training since before birth to have the perfect bodies. They can compete with people who had just learnt nen or even some of the less talented nen masters with only their strength and skill, shown by Killua knocking out Zushi, who learnt nen in the heavens arena.

"Follow you. So nothing else?" The ninja continued questioning, probably due to being taught to always question everything in his ninja training.

"That's right, I cannot tell you where or when you must arrive, you need only to follow me" The examiner answered leaving most of the applicants feeling the mental burden of not knowing how long they were going to run for or what they are going to arrive to after running.

As the applicants ran, more and more found it harder to match the examiner's pace with some gradually falling further and further back.

Adam, ignoring all the muttering and leorio's shouting, focused on running while trying to stay in a meditative state to enhance his aura.

It was hard at first, but slowly he began to see that it was working, he would need all the time he could get to improve, ready enough for the chimaera ants event or even the phantom troupe in case he stumbled upon them.

With being able to stay in a meditative state in his sleep or even when he's fighting it would boost his aura fast compared to other nen rookies and maybe he would be able to rival Gon and Killua's natural talent, only found in one out of one hundred million in nen when it comes to aura amount and aura flow.

After running and improving his meditative state, Adam approached stairs and when he went to run up them he broke out of his meditation.

"I guess I still have a lot of the way to go" thought Adam.

As he was about to reach the top of the stairs and could feel the warmth of the light once again he felt a rush of wind pass by him and he saw the backs of two children he knew were Gon and Killua.

He had the feeling to also race and pace them, but he buried it down and wanted to wait to interact with them until it was absolutely necessary to avoid questions about Adam's past and his limited knowledge of certain things that were shown in the anime and not knowing basic daily life knowledge. As well as not gaining any more of Hisoka's or Illumi's attention by interacting with Gon and Killua.

That's when a bright light hit his eyes as he reached the top to see Gon and Killua arguing with the examiner, who was just standing there watching them.

When he got up he heard them ask the examiner "which of us was fastest?"

"You crossed the finish line simultaneously" Replied the examiner.

They then had their discussion on who bought food, but Adam just toned them out.

That was what he was planning to do. Ignore them. But then Gon suddenly turned in his direction and said "Hey I'm Gon. Nice to meet you, you must be pretty fast to stay in front of everyone, what's your name?"

Adam knowing that he has to reply and make a good impression on this nen genius said "I'm Adam, I'm not that fast I have just trained my body well enough, you're pretty fast yourself"

"Thanks Adam, this is Killua next to me. We just met in the first phase as well"

Killua just smiled at Adam.

But Adam could tell that Killua was analysing him by the look in his eye. Killua could have probably told that something was different about Adam, it was his nen that Killua could sense different about Adam but Killua didn't know about nen yet, though he could probably tell by the same feeling he gets from his family, who all have nen. However Killua didn't show any strange facial expressions due to his training.
