Chapter 31

Pamela was no longer the radiant girl she’d been when she returned from her honeymoon. She’d become quiet, her eyes shadowed. But she assured me things were well between her and her husband, and pleaded with me not to make waves, and so, rather than punch Haynsworth’s perfect nose, I kept my distance from his household.

Jeremy was in the office more often than I, since I was the globe-trotting half of our team. I would finish a mission, return to MI6, debrief, then take him back to our house and spend whatever time I had before the next mission making love with him. He proved to be such a whiz at what he did that his father’s reluctance to have him join MI6 was overcome. Eventually Mr Waters became so impressed with the way we worked together that he gave us our own office, not very spacious, but large enough to hold a desk for each of us, and our own secretary.
