I don't know who threw the first punch. Or the second. The only way I had of perceiving those hits were the grunts and inhumane screeches that came from the otherside of the pantry door. They sounded muffled. Was it wearing something on its face or something? I gently leaned my head forward to get a better idea of what was happening.
"Fuck!" I heard the girl's voice. She must have gotten hit or something. That can't be good. Once she was done for, so was I, after all. I held my breath and quietly prayed. My prayers went far from answered.
It was after the second hit that I was forced from hiding. Some ridiculously hard body slammed into the pantry, breaking it to pieces and smushed me against the wall. I meekly fell to the side, turning my head to see what the hell happened. I felt my whole body go cold. It was the size of a human, but it was pure white. It had no mouth or nose, but rather two massive, reptile adjacent eyes. Its muscular form was enough to convince me I stood no chance, comparable to some legendary bodybuilder rather than a normal human. The whip-like tail didn't help matters, giving me the sense one whack could send my head flying off. I felt my heart stop when its eyes met mine. I felt myself go cold before the girl I've only met twice sent a kick to the thing's head, making it screech, before jumping to my side as it held its face.
"GET UP!" She dragged me to my feet before forcibly leading me to the window and quickly (or desperately, your call) pulling it open, and proceeded to send me tumbling out onto the fire escape, her just behind. "NO TIME TO STAY STILL, MOVE MARCUS!" Her voice pushed me into running, hopping over the railing and landing on the staircase under me, repeating this process as I slowly came closer to street level. What I didn't anticipate, until I heard the sound of collapsing floors next to me, was that this thing would do exactly what it did next.
That is, crash through the wall and go straight for the kill. I dodged in the nick of time, sending a weak punch to its passing form. It grabbed a hold of the fire escape, and with the weight of its flying body, ripped the thing from the building's side. I watched helplessly as my descent to the street began. Looking over the surroundings, in the seconds I had to do so, I made a decision and began adjusting my course, sending my body right into a parked car. I felt the roof shiver under the weight of me before I rolled off and onto the sidewalk. I was quick to get back on my feet and start running before whatever the hell was after me regained composure.
Think, think! The only way I was gonna be safe is if this thing was dead, but I was always weak as fuck! Besides, that thing didn't look hurt at all despite getting thrown into a pantry and falling from a fucking fire escape! So, how was I supposed to kill it? Think, dumbass! I grit my teeth, when I suddenly heard a rather loud crash from behind me. Before I could look, I felt something connect with my back. The damn thing had launched itself forward, slamming into my backside like a cannonball. All the air in my lungs pushed its way out of me. I felt my spine crack, making me wince, before its hand wrapped around my waist and, with the force of god, lifted me up and sent me down into the concrete.
"A-AH-" I couldn't speak, my whole body in shock. Oh my god, this was absolutely how I was gonna die. How was this going to be where I died?! I watched as my world stuttered, like a digital display, cursing myself all the while. Thankfully, when I felt my hope completely slipping away, I felt myself suddenly being lifted to my feet and forced to run.
"Shit shit shit! Alright, in here!" The girl opened the door to a shop, pushing us both inside and then further in. The bloodied, beaten girl seemed to draw customers' amusement. They probably figured she was a dead woman walking in the eyes of god. However, the crash of that monstrosity entering through the shop's glass window caused a panic in the store, powerful enough that we could make our way into the employee's area. The sound of customers being mauled was enough convincing for us to move faster, past the confused workers and out the back exit. She led me to the left, into another random shop and, eventually, after getting past the apathetic customer base, who only had it in themselves to snicker or roll their eyes at the blood covering us, we arrived in the bathroom. "Okay, we should be good in here. I'm pretty sure. Mostly sure." She said while moving the heavy duty trash can in front of the door. I nodded along as she talked while holding in my sounds of pain.
"It's okay. He didn't seem to do too much serious damage…that's visible anyways." Her sympathy didn't make my body feel much better, but my spirit did have a moment of pleasant recognition.
"What…the fuck was that thing?" I asked, holding my aching back.
"A…angel. It's an angel." She said, sounding almost unsure.
"An angel…like, a judgment tool?"
"Not like the ones you're used to. Uhm…it belongs to a different god." She shook her head. "No, we don't have time for this. I'll tell you all about it later, okay. What you need to know is that it's strong, it's bloodthirsty, and its skin can't be pierced."
"You can't pierce it? Jesus…I figured it was heavy duty but that…that's a lot." I held my head in my hands, so close to just having a panic attack. Oh god, death was so damn close I could taste it. "Just…what the hell do we do?" I tried to consider anything resembling a plan, but I couldn't think of a single thing at all.
"He's hard as hell. There's no way we'll be able to pierce his skin. If we're gonna kill him, it's gonna be through something tricky." What she said makes sense. Some way of killing it, some way of killing it…wait a second.
"Hey, it looks pretty human. Do you think it has a brain?"
"A brain? I can read its mind, though it doesn't think much. So, I'd assume so."
"Wait…does it have ears?"
"Ears?" She looked at me with curiosity, clearly lost. Then, she made an O face before her lips curled into a devious smile. "Oh, I love that idea." I smiled back, though much more nervous.
"Great. Then, let's go kill that thing."
…
I took a deep breath. In my hand, I held a hammer I'd grabbed from the ruined store that thing had left behind. It was somewhere, but it was being rather quiet now. I grit my teeth, not wanting to let myself make any unnecessary noise. I needed to find it, but aggravating it when I didn't see it first could only end badly. So, down the streets I went, my eyes peeled. Other people passed me by, seemingly unconcerned. Police had just shown up to handle the ruined shop while I was leaving, and since this thing wasn't in sight, people felt no need to panic yet. Good, that made things easier.
"Plus, a good few meat shields never hurt anyone." I whispered, hoping no one could hear me. How long was I gonna have to look, though? The longer it took the more likely something was gonna go wrong. I clenched the hammer tighter. Shit, shit, no, you can't panic. I decide to focus on one point, just ahead, taking deep, slow breaths.
"Breathe…out…breathe…out…breathe-"
"-out."
I froze. The voice was inhumane, sounding muffled. Likely by…skin…
"..."
I ran.
The sounds of people being slammed through like they were walking sticks forced my legs to move even faster, especially to make up for the time lost bumping into people. In my mind, I tried to draw the route from my location to the meeting spot. It was only a few yards away.
Run, Marcus, run!
